Now that Characters can be lumped into one HoM, is this just a change for looks, or are all of the characters really linked? I'm asking because I've already gotten most everything for my main character and want to collect other armors in order to benefit from awards in GW2.
Also, what is the difference between Character and Account based HoM? I mean, why would anyone keep a Character based HoM?

Considering we have no idea how anything will work in GW2, your guess is as good as any of ours.

Anet has said that accomplshments in the HoM are account based from the start. If you get an accomplishment on any character it passes over to GW2. Doesn't stop you getting that accomplishment on any other character as well.
The ability to display the accomplishments in account-based is just so you don't have to keep switching chars to show all your accomplishments to people. Also, some people will only get accomplishments on a few characters while others have enough time to fill several halls with many characters.
It's all just to make it easier on players to decide how they want to get things done.
Why bother having multiple halls? Some people don't just have one main character.
