Uh if you gave the account away then it's not your account anymore. Not to sound so harsh, but that's Indian giving otherwise. You can contact support but they don't like account sharing and if it isn't yours anymore then you shouldn't get it back...

Start a support ticket, have your access keys on hand and get them to rest your password and change the email address. Leave out the part where you gave the account away when starting the ticket, as that is against the EULA and will get the account outright banned.
And yes, like refer says, its a pretty douche bag thing you're doing, especially since the player you gave it to might be storing his stuff on your account. But still, you're the one that paid for it and he should have looked the gift horse in the mouth.

gulp. I wrote support an email but this was before I read your advice :S I told them I gave the account to a friend :S but yeh I also still have the original boxes with activation keys so hopefully they can do something but yeh most likely I wont get it back.

So...why give it away again?

Yeah i'd be really suprised if you got it back simply because it could be considered a scam , for example : give account away for 6 months but keep activation cards, let the person you gave the account to work their asses off filling said account with items and cash then 'claim' your wanting to return to guild wars and therefore want your account back. You should never give game accounts away as i have learned to my own cost in the past.

if you said "gave" they will ban the account since thats breaking the EULA so now both you and the person you gave it to are screwed.

OP - if you knew who you gave it to, you could try tracking them down and finding out the password before anything happens and getting the items traded quickly maybe for protection.

Might I point out that ArenaNet takes the viewpoint that both you and the recipient of the "gift" are breaking the EULA. Therefore, they will block the account. They have no way of knowing if you sold the account or gifted it to someone and don't care. According to the legal stuff on guildwars.com, they might even block you and the other party from getting new accounts.
But, I agree with others, trying to get the account back was "dirty pool". You should have just bought a new one.

Actually, it is a scam. When you give away an account, its no longer yours. The personal information is likely changed along with the password and the email address.
The person in current control of the account can contact support and report you stealing his account, which is true. In the end, the account will be closed and no one will have it.
He loses his items and characters because you decided to be an indian giving jerk, aka, scammer. But you won't gain the account once he tells anet his side of the story and you lose a friend. I know someone who went through this very same thing although he used it as a backup account so he didnt lose anything. The account was closed.
fail at a whole new level.
