Hmm funny, i was thinking about posting my idear for a change in trading aswell.
First of all, i also
do not like the idear of an auction house, it has been done in numerous games and (altho easy) it takes away from the physical person to person trade.
So i conjured up something that resembles a market stand. This idear is not fully crystalised but as this discussion has now been (re)started perhaps others can improve, point out weaknesses (constructive critasism

) on what i have come up with sofar...
The Xunlai trader frees up another pane in the box, or gives a special trading bag to equip. I would understand these to start of with 5 spots and doing trading missions will open up more slots, or give runes to expand your tradingbag.
For the Xunlai pane, this pane is only active in the town or outpost you place it (like a market stand), and items can only be viewed by others through the Xunlai agent; people that want to buy an item can use a whisper, to ask for a price and a time for the exchange (if you are not online items wont be viewable); This way you can have items for sale, but do missions instead of just standing at the box spamming the trade channel. (ofcourse one can still advertise their items and prices

) ... if you clear out all the items from this pane you can deactivate it and buy/set-up a market stand in a different outpost, this as 'hotspots' change by f/e the zaishen missions or (weekend) events. The current way of formalising the [trade] remains the same..
Items 'for sale' opened up for pre-viewing at the Xunlai market stand could be accompanied by a sorting mechanism.
For the Trading bag, this bag is viewable by other players when they sellect a player and hit the [For sale] button that activates when sellecting this player.
Items can only be viewed this way, talking/wispering to the player with the items for sale lets one set a price. The current [Trade] is used to formalise the exchange. Perhaps putting an item in this bag will activate a $ icon above the players head, indicating they have something for sale...
This will basically not change anything about the current way of trading, but it will hopefully make searching for items easier, which means buyers and sellers can 'find' eachother easyer. It also means a trader does not have to engage in pre-view trade exchanges that do not result in a sale..
Weakness, a bag/boxpane can be used as extra storrage, so maybe a restriction has to be placed on items in this bag to be only for sale to a player or to a trader. So dont put anything in this pane/bag if you dont want to sell it.
Still weak, people can use a friend to give items to, to then get them given back.
xtra frustration? This could also cause frustration as people expect to be able to buy something, which then isnt for sale but put in the bag as a way for extra storrage...
And you wont be able to clear out the bag, if any items are left so you cant set up a market stand in a different outpost..
Possible sollution
So perhaps this bag/boxpane can be button activated, meaning, it serves as a storage OR a trade window (this might be done with a current bag/boxpane ?). Making a BAG a trade window activates the $ above your head;
Or for the boxpane, lists the items in the Xunlai market stand, which then works the way discribed above..
I can see both ways to work and or be active at the same time, with a total of 35 slots to be opened up for pre-view trading. which probably is enough for someone that realy likes to trade items, for say his/her guild. Or people that want to have a garage sale to clear out spots in their storage panes...
