Ive just recently began playing Guildwars im currently a W/R with prophecies under my belt and im now moving through factions.
Im interested in creating a Necromancer character as a change of pace. I wanted to run him through factions as that is new and fresh to me but I was told they do horribly there. Is there any truth to this? Also I plan to make a Paragon for the Nightfall campaign, is this a good idea or are they more used as a pvp support character? Sorry for all the questions, any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Necromancers do fine in Factions; whoever told you that was ... mistaken. They were probably stereotyping Necro as minion master only. Try Curses. Factions has Assassin's Promise, which makes for a powerful combination as a N/A. Paragons are only accepted in groups with one build, the "Imbagon," but they are capable of more. Imbagon is overkill for normal mode, anyway. I easily completed Nightfall with H/H as a spear chucker. Cruel Spear is fun. Look in the Paragon and Necromancer section in the Campfire section of the forum for more builds and advice, particularly the "sticky" threads in each that are designed for new players.

Curses are probably the best line in both PvP and PvE that do just fine, they do fine in PvP too, but Curses is PvX, and does it's job well.

Assuming you have access to all campaigns, keep in mind that once you get through the training missions you can move to other campaigns to get skills as needed. You can also purchase a skill or capture an elite with your warrior and then purchase a tome with your necro to unlock that skill.

Regardless, I would advise moving to Nightfall first chance you get to pick up the heroes that you can use anywhere.

My veteran advice is to take your W/R and unlock extra secondary professions for him so that you can be move versatile when needed. People that are LFGing and advertising themselves as a W/R as opposed to W/x or just Warr indicate to me that the one build they're using is the only thing I can expect from them. If a given mission requires a little bit (or alot) of versatility, listing a secondary is usually a sign that that player won't have it.

If you're willing take the time, the secondary outposts around the crystal desert will give you quests to unlock secondary professions. Also, you might not have all 200 attribute points. Bring all your warrs atts to 0 and check. If you're only up to 170, you need to pick up the quests also. One's in crystal desert and one's in Drok's.

I've not used imbagon since my second month of playing my Para (Now my primary char, Had him for about 9 mos) I haven't even touched the imbagon. Never really had issues finding groups without it. It's possible that most of my teams just naturally assumed I was running it, but most ppl just didn't have that kind of stick up their @$$es.

if ya plan on making a nec, an ss will work anywhere in the game, mm's are probably the toughest to play, and an sv can be invaluable in alot of places.
my fav skins and armor for a nec are in nightfall, but u have to pick what u like

Paragon stuff you'll find here and Necromancer here. The stickies, while possibly being slightly outdated, should give you a general idea about both classes.

Nec: A good offensive support. From degenerating hexes, to mass armies of minions.

Paragon: Imbagon. That's all that needs to be said right there. (Especially when they can spam Save Yourselves! in a pitch.)

More info can be found in the two links Racthoh has provided for you.

Thank you all for the info, I have done both attribute quests and I used to be a W/Mo So I have both the /r and /mo classes unlocked for my warrior but ill take your advice and unlock the others. I'm not quite sure on how tomes work haven't came across one yet is that an eotn thing? Sorry as I said I am new. Also I like to follow the storyline, so in that way is it better for me to go from prophecies to factions to nightfall or do they not work in that way? Thanks for any advice.

Skill tomes drop rarely, so no wonders that you havn't seen one, however can they be purchased from players, I'd recomend trading in Kamadan, as there is most players there.

And I would also like to say, as mentioned before, that you should go to NF as fast as possible, so you can get some heroes, you can pretty fast gain 7 of them.

I guess your real question is, which professions should I create? Which ones is best? And to that is the answer, all are good in different ways, make on of each and try them out, see which ones you prefer.

After you finish Prophecies, I would suggest skipping Factions and doing NF first. Prohecies has an involved storyline (the best out of all the campaigns IMO) but the others, less so. There is no particular order the storyline should go.

The reason you should do NF first is so you can get "heroes" for your characters which are basically NPC's like Devona except that you can give them runes, weapons and armor and also control them. After that, I would skip Factions again and do EOTN because there are even more heroes as well as very powerful PvE skills you can only obtain there.

As for what kind of profession to pick, it is true that it is a matter of taste (and everyone's is different) but I know you want more specific answers. I wouldn't make a Paragon and instead opt for a Dervish. For one, they look much cooler IMO and secondly, they are probably the best runners in the game. Actually, what I would really do is make your warrior as powerful as possible and learning all there is to learn about being a warrior (get all warrior elite skills from all campaigns, etc) before making another character- but that's just me.
