Dont tank in GW, its slow and completely fails outside of specific builds for a very limited amount of areas. Your also being very broad, if you could be more specific, it would be easier to give you classes you may enjoy more.

For DPS I could recommend Warrior, Assassin, Dervish, Elementalist and Ranger.

The best recommendation I can give, and I am sure others will agree, is to try each class out, there is no penalty for deleting characters, give each one a play through, then choose the one the was most enjoyable to play.

Tanking in the classic MMO meaning isn't realy done in Guild Wars.

However, due to their high armor combined with decent DPS, warriors are often considered the "classic" front line character. Although any melee character can easely do this.

A warrior's job isn't to tank all the damage though, but rather disrupt the enemy, and keep them away from your squishies through body blocks, knock downs, ... It is then up to your backline (prot monks, ritualists, ...) to keep you on your feet.

You forgot the most important part: deal insane amounts of damage. KD's and stuff are there to make life easier, but ultimately the Warrior is there to drop targets as fast as possible.

@Marty: i classify killing enemies very fast under "disrupting the enemy, and keeping them away from your squishies" ... :P

With 2 human players and 6 heros... Everything is possible.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned a paragon / curses necro combo (with heros), insane dmg and insane protection.

Builds dont matter so much at an earlier stage, but when you get further into the game, i would highly recommend running a discord setup with the player Ele running the caller build, and the warrior could run an earthshacker or d-slash build with save yourselves.

For builds, head over to PvXwiki.com
It has almost every build you could ever need.

Haha, I take it you and your fiancée played WoW before switching over to GW? (I say that only because my friends asked very similar questions when trying out GW from WoW)

Tanks aren't really needed, like everyone else has said. And really, any class can do "dps" (I always despised that term). Oh, and unless you're running some sort of 600/smite or SF gimmick, you can't exactly 2-man your way through the game.

I'd focus more on what you enjoy doing in an MMO as opposed to what you would necessarily "need". I can't tell you how many times I've deleted a character only to re-create it a month later; in fact, I find a lot of fun in rolling a new character to try out new playstyles and builds.

lolwut? What game have you been playing? You can two man your way through any area of the game. Hell, you could probably even do urgie/deep 2 man. (ofc with heroes, but henchmen could still do all of proph).

Tanking is a bad idea , unlike other games you dont have skills that can draw aggro to you when used and so on . GW IA system is different ; sure a warrior can tank so well but can also do a good DPS , KD , inflict conditions etc. Quite funny , diff weapns to use without needing to change your secondary prof.

Yeah but not so many ppl really know it. Paragon syncs well with all physical profs due to Command att line . Even moti has some good things for casters its really slow due to casting times ( at least 50% of them should be taken away ).

Tanking in the form of body blocking through the use of a wall
or other large object can be effective, however
I wouldn't dedicate any skills towards it, just make use of positioning.

In general though throughout NM there shouldn't be a need for
any form of tanking.

I would just suggest that you play whichever character suits you
best, if you wish to branch out into HM and are interested in DPS
I would suggest using a Necromancer and would stay away from
Elementalist and Ranger.

If you do insist on tanking I would use a Warrior.

i recommend the best two professions you can have are the ones that attract you the most. in the end you get heros and hencies so they can be your "tanks", healers, etc etc.

i started as an E/W back when i didn;t know about builds, etc etc. i used to run around with a firey sword and mark of rodgert. was definitely called a noob once or twice when i started interacting with other players once i got into PVP...

just play the game you love. i now exclusively play monk and only bring out my ele for special tasks my monk cannot do. monks are great, they are good in a team of monk + warrior. with a monk and a warrior you can do anything in the game. ... i really think that monks and warriors belong together... just check out Koss and Tahlkora

For physical, I'd go for a assassin since you're looking for dps. My hypothesis was that, warriors are the superior dps'er but I started playing around with both warriors and assassins. After playing the meta build for each, I concluded that assassins can potentially deal higher dps (as long as critical agility is maintained.) Majority of the posters on campfire is a section of high sociological deviance, but unlike most other sections has enough cerebral capacity and maturity to talk about the subject honestly. There will probably be people who will say otherwise due to predilection for warriors and becomes a vexatious situation.

Anyway, these are the two meta build for assassins.

For tanking in elite area, a permasin (a.k.a. God mode assassins, abusing the shadow form which can be kept on permanently) makes the best tank. Like other stated, tank is a waste in general PvE.

Also, bookmark this page: http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Edit: If you don't have Critical Agility, don't bother running assassins. This skill is needed for assassins to function well.

As far as Casters, a Necromancer is going to outperform an Elementalist @ DPS all day long. Necros have quite a few armor-ignoring damage skills whereas Elementalists only have a couple with most of their skills dealing Elemental damage (Cold, Earth, Fire, Lightning).

Many of the Necromancer's best armor-ignoring damage skills rely on the enemy you target to be hit with Physical (Blunt, Slashing, Piercing) damage, which goes hand-in-hand with your fiance' playing a "Tank" (best suggestion there has already been made - Warrior; without the Nightfall campaign, and the Sunspear skill Critical Agility, an Assassin isn't going to be able to make it as a frontliner). As a Necro, you would supply the Hexes, your fiance' would supply Physical damage, and the Hexes would trigger, making things go BOOM!

Those are the best suggestions that I can give you, other than that you should try out each Profession and see what you like or don't like. If you have any other questions, PM me (clicky my name to the left!), and I'll be happy to try and help!

Regards,

Tyrael
