Patar's Sketchies
Patar
Ok, so at this point in time I have only ONE sketch of any chars from Guild Wars. I'm no professional, and I prefer to stick with the good ol' pencil, colored pencils, and paper. All of my drawings will have imperfections, I can assure you. But I'm comfortable with that, it gives me room to grow. Constructive criticism is welcome, along with how I can go about changing whatever you feel I should.
1) My Warrior, Asako Takara, clad in teal Primeval armor. It was a pain in the ass to draw (especially every little chain link in the under armor and the fancy designs in teal). Yes, I know the left arm (on the right from the viewer's perspective) is messed up quite a bit, but it was way too late into the drawing to do anything about it when I noticed. It is a female character, and it's sad but kind of funny how I made her look more like a man in the drawing:

More sketches coming up soon!!!

Looks good, Primeval isnt exactly the most feminine armor so its to be expected
If u brought her shoulders down a little it would give her less of the broad look, also slimmed her arms and thighs

Yeah it's quite good though, I don't think it's overly masculine but there is a hint of it.
I would also say that at a glance the colour looks quite washy and faded, if you could make it a bit bolder next time, the picture would stand out a lot more.

Lol I clicked on the picture first and ended up reading the post to see what the sex was.

(relooks) guess not, it a little to "not square" for a male.

I can understand the difficulty of female primeval. I sketched it a long while back myself, with a fair degree of challenge there too. Keep going!

IRL a woman would look pretty androgynous in the primeval armour. >.>'
You could empathize the femininity of the character, but I don't think that should be the focus of improvement. I like the chainmail-detail, it's easily recognizable for what it is. I think it's quite a good sketch, overall. You may want to work more on your shading and highlighting, to give the illustration some depth. It's easier to work on this if you start out with something simple. How about a monk in ascalon armour?
Working on colouring could be next in line. How about entering Starr's Colouring Contest?
Should be a nice challenge, but you don't have to think about the lineart.

Lol, well thanks for the tips all. And yeah, the chainmail was a pain in the tush. The coloring's really only washy and faded because I used colored pencils and lightly colorred in the teal and brown bits, and used my regular pencil for the grey/metal parts of the armor. What other kinds of coloring things should I look into?

...Other than photoshop? XD
Well for real media, go for some markers or watercolor/gouache. They are by far the fastest ways to color something, while still making them look recognizable. Problem is, decent markers and especially decent watercolor/gouache is freakishly expensive. I bought a set (6 tubes) of designer gouache for the low price of 50 USD. They were on a half price sale.
Usable markers (prismacolors/pantone or even copic if you liek teh animes and are willing to shell out even more cash) are even more expeeensive (copics are around 70USD for 12 markers, while prismas are like 36ish USD for 24 markers).
So in the end, go digital if you want to be cheap and get awesome results, or try some ink/water based media if you want smooth color.

I like the chain mail detail, tip for when working with pencils - use an eraser to make small highlights - it will make your work seem more alive, this also works for color pencils.
