Accidental Trade - How to Report Someone?
blackstarling
So there I was, registering for Guild Wars Guru... running Guild Wars in the background, smoking a cigarette and watching Big Cat Diary on Animal Planet. (Actually, I just put it on my so my cat has something to watch other than my monitor from my lap.)
I had posted a WTB in Lion's Arch for green dye. As I was fiddling around on this site I realized I hadn't checked to see if I had any offers... so I quickly clicked back to find that someone had already initated a trade with me. I quickly typed in 75, offer, and accept. If it wasn't for my text box... I might never have noticed...
I traded this guy 75 PLATINUM for 1 vial of green dye. (As opposed to 75 gold.) I asked him a couple of times to reverse the trade. He put me on ignore. I had others PM him, he ignored them. (Showing as offline) Finally he just went offline completely.
True effin story...
Is there ANYTHING I can do? (Other than submit a support ticket, I did that.) Can I expect that GW will help me get it back? What CAN I expect? Anything?
I just traded years worth of goods for this money - I wanted to upgrade my Guild, outfit my main character, etc...
oh man.......

Hate to say it, but you're out 75k. I know it sucks, but it's life. I'm sorry that some people in this game can be such malevolent, selfish and childish dickholes, but they exist and if anet dealt with those types of peoples, they'd need a whole department just for that.
I probably don't need to tell you this as you seem like a reasonable person, but don't let this event taint your perception. My advice to you is still always do to others as you would have them do to you. Should someone stumble by you and make the same mistake as you did, I hope that you will remember how awful you felt when this happened to you.

He didn't scam you. I really doubt /report will get you anywhere.
As for your questions-
Can I expect that GW will help me get it back? - no.
What CAN I expect? Anything? - no.
It sucks but I don't think you will get anything for this. If anything, use it as a lesson - dye is pretty cheap at a trader, and it's impossible to put in the wrong price with him.

Heh... uuuugh.... wanna buy a green dye for 75k? Hell, I'll give you a 25k discount...?
Inde
Sorry blackstarling. It's happened to the best of us in various games. I've deleted items before that were valuable, dropped stuff on the ground I didn't mean to, did bad trades... all part of gaming.

Learn from the experience and move on.
Other than asking him for decency to prevail (and getting others to ask him) and to return the gold due to your mistake... since 75k is definitely not the going price for green dye, you have no recourse.
However way you play it, and whatever you were busy with at the time, albeit several things - pay attention when trading.

I remember one time when i was leveling in Pre-Searing, i found a black dye. I did the usual jumping around, acting all excited and what-not. I picked it up but i was low on inventory space. I quickly found a merchant and started selling things willy-nilly just to get some space. What I didn't realize, is that i sold my black dye as well for 1g.
The moral of this story- Make absolutely sure of what you're trading- whether you be buying or selling. Watch out for stupid mistakes like mine. You won't regret it.

You're going to report someone for your screw up? Sounds like that guy deserves to be banned.
notskorn
This was your fault. There's nothing to report.
Braxton619
Sorry there is nothing you can do. It is not scamming. One time I was selling 4 ecto for 20k and this guy gave me 40k instead for 4 ectos. Thats why now I ALWAYS deposit my gold into my chest. When I buy something, I will withdraw the ammount the guy is selling it for in my chest. That way I can make sure I don't give over the ammount it's worth.
I am sorry for what happened to you ,but it happens. Plus 75k is a very small amount of money. Just UWSC and you can get that much money back in a couple of hours, if not 1 hour.

I always keep all my moneyin the chest and only take out what I need.
This helps free up for trades and stops silly mistakes like this.

pro tip : don't keep large sums of money on your person while trading if you can avoid it, just withdraw whatever sum you need from storage directly before trading

Wow that really sucks...but you were doing various tasks and messed up. Best to just move on

I don't think it's unacceptable to hope for common decency in gaming. It might be wishful thinking, and it might be a lost cause, but it's still my right to attempt to pursue amends.
I'm more than willing to discuss the topic of proper and improper expectations in gaming as well as practically anything else regarding what is and is not acceptable behavior - and all grey areas in between.
I'm not willing to humor someone who's main goal is to exacerbate the situation.

To all who suggested leaving money in the chest until trade... Great Idea! I'd have to count it out twice before being able to accept a trade. (Once into inventory and once into trade.) That should eliminate all negligible chance of mistakes... Thanks...

No offense, but ... it's just and only your fault. You can't blame the man for not giving it back to you. 'Honesty' in trading doesn't exist, there is only an offer, deal and bargain scenario. There is no such a thing as 'scam' unless someone uses trade hack to force you to trade, but it isn't the case. If anything, I would hand you a 3 day ban for filling up a report on non-bannable offense and for sheer stupidity.

Erm, you know there is a dye merchant in Lions Arch....right?
What, you were trying to save maybe 25gp, and had over 75k in your inventory?
I am speechless.
Just hope you learned a valuable lesson......

Same thing happened to me... Was selling 40 shards and accidently put up 40 ectos hehe.
Ah well I quit playing a while ago and i still got some ectos laying around I guess you can have 'em. I'll try to catch you online tomorrow.

Soz to hear the story, but you only got yourself to blame, don't smoke cigarettes next time playing.

All in all, there is nothing WE can do. you wont get your gold back, try to be more careful with your trades.
crazybanshee
I agree with other posters. Sucks to be you, but there's nothing anet or anyone can do. You screwed up, he didn't scam you. I've been in situations where people have given me too much, either way more money or extra ecto/gems etc on trade. I'll give em back. Why? Cause it's a game, and I'm honest. This person isn't. Nothing you can do.
dilan155
sucks mate, happens to the best of us, best you can do is learn from it and double check everything from now on.
Gift3d
Report yourself for being so incredibly stupid and careless.

Lucky him. I would've done the exact same thing.

Only one person did anything wrong. Punishing him further than the loss of 75k is just cruel. There is no one who needs to make "amends."
iVendetta
I do not mean to question your honesty, but if 'accidental trades' were to be reversed, the reports would pile up with junk like this and profiteering would soar. What I'm trying to say is that due to your negligence, you lost that 75 platinum and since there is no 'reverse-trade' system, ANET is simply not going to sympathize for your loss and hand you 75 platinum. Good luck though.
Messy
I was there when you were asking in all chat for people to PM this guy, who was offline. It sucks and I'm sorry it happened to you. I guess it is part of everybody's gaming experience, but just learn from it so it hopefully doesn't happen again. Be more careful, double check, leave your gold in Storage and just take as needed, and double check again before you submit.
I'm not sure there is anything you can report. Technically, he didn't scam you, it was your mistake. I would give it a shot anyway.
Ignore the trolls that enjoy rubbing it in when they see people upset over something.

And to the OP - you were careless, and unfortunately got someone who decided to take advantage of your carelessness. I'm sure you won't be that careless again ...
If you need to make the money back, farm items for Nicholas (not this week though - Charr Hides are too easy to get and will be worth nothing). Over the past 2 months I've made over 1000K farming for Nicholas (when you include drops, etc as well) - and that's without spending huge amounts of time at it.

You are wrong, honesty in trading does exist. Whether or not it is common is mostly a matter of chance. The game has built in mechanisms to prevent players from being exploited or from making mistakes like I did. (For example, showing when a trade has been changed and having a 'Make Offer' button separate from the 'Accept' button. My inattention surpassed these fail-safes. If these mechanisms did not exist, some players would still participate in 'honest' trades. Some players would not. Saying honesty in trading does not exist is saying that every player who participates in and has participated in trades is deceitful. Such a claim is unfounded and illogical. (For instance, I guarantee that close friends are very likely to make honest trades whether or not there is a chance of exploiting each other.)
I never claimed to have been scammed. My claim is that I had an interaction with a player who lacks decency. On the note of forcing a trade however - Inasmuch as I was not forced to trade, neither was he. This also points to my original point - I could not have failed in this case without his active participation.
Regarding your proposed solution: Banning players who are taken advantage of due to lowered defenses is like sending pickpocket victims to jail for the night. It doesn't address the problem. Sure, the victim is more likely to protect themselves in the future, but that won't stop the perpetrator from doing the same thing to someone else. (Also of note: the fact that the victim was taken advantage of at all is probably enough to make them be more careful in the future. Why bother punishing them further?) Something important to consider: There is no minimum age limit to play Guild Wars. Players younger than 18 years may be present if a parent or guardian accepts the terms of service for them. If I was 10, would your judgment stand? Would you ban a 10 year old who used support channels to try to recoup their lost gold? It's a rhetorical question that I believe addresses an important point.
I submitted a ticket through NCSoft requesting that they aid me in retrieving the money I mistakenly traded. I did not send up a 'report' in the way that it seems you think. I did not ask that the player be banned or even admonished. In the request for assistance, I admitted my mistake and asked for their help in the matter. I do not believe that NCSoft has ever discouraged submitting support tickets unless it is for a bannable offense. Nowhere in the Rules of Conduct, Terms of Use or the User Agreement does it forbid such communication. Thus there is no basis for banning or even punishing someone attempting to find a peaceable solution to an unfortunate situation. Aside from the lack of legal ramifications - it is not socially acceptable to punish a victim, regardless of the reason that they were exploited - "sheer stupidity" or not.
The Guild Wars Rules of Conduct states in number one: "While playing Guild Wars, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players. You will not report players maliciously, or cause them to be investigated without reason." Based on this statement, I have the right to expect that other players will allow me to enjoy the game and that they will not cause me distress. Even though these statements are very broad, common sense dictates that I am not wrong for attempting to find a better end result. You can try to use the last sentence about reporting players against me, but I'll just reference the first part of this rule again.
I screwed up. It happens. If I get my money back, sweet. If I don't, oh well. I hope that whenever I interact with other players, they are fair and honest. More than that though, I hope this will teach me to pay more attention when there's something at stake. I don't like your opinion and I hope that it changes but I've accepted that I don't have control over you just as I don't have control over the player who ran off with an extra 74,925 gold. Maybe one day you'll be judged by your own gavel and then you'll rethink your stance. Maybe not.
The moral of this story: Learn from your(my) mistakes. Treat others as you would like to be treated and you might set a good example for other to follow. Add the rest of the jerks to your ignore box.

Whoops, that was misleading wasn't it? What I meant by that was that I had saved up all sorts of rare and pricey stuff since 2006 when I started playing, not that it was equivalent to what someone would earn in a few years. Sorry!

First off, Sorry u got burned..the guys an ass..I know u don't HAVE to be honest and decent when trading, but I have always found that u have more return customers if u are. Second point; just cuz to some ppl 75k isn't alot doesn't mean that everyone feels that way...I think 75k is a bit of money to have stolen...Not everyone out there are farmers, so money is harder to come by for them. Third point; Just cuz u think the amount of money is of no consequence doesn't mean that the jerk was in the right to steal from this person...
