how do you pronounce aatxe?
Braxton619
Hi guys, I have a quick question. How exactly do you pronounce aatxe? I thought it was A-TAX but someone said thats wrong. Also I used several text-to-speech programs and they sound all different. Thanks!

Aa-chee / Ah-chee.
If http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Talk:...#Pronunciation is to be believed. (Have no reason to doubt it, imo o_O)
Though yeah, I say At-axe too. It's just more understandable that way IMO.

Yeah, there were a couple threads on this a few years ago. I too used to think it was "A-tax" (which kinda sounds like "Attacks"). Of course, even though I now know the correct Basque pronunciation, I still think of it in my head as A-tax. Pretty much nobody I know on Vent pronounces it incorrectly anyway, so if I did say it correctly (aa-che), nobody would know what I was talking about anyway.

atch.
not quite sure where people get the extra 'a' from... aatxe -> attaxe ??

For me, coming from scandinavia, i say "aatks" without the -e at the end.
Whether or not it is the correct way may be another matter.

Ok... from what I can gather from various attempts to spell a pronunciation.
Aatxe -> ætʃeɪ (English IPA)
I think. The most intuitive way I can think of writing that in something that could easily be read would be "atché". I debate the "t", but meh.

I say ataxe, never heard anyone actually say aahche or whatever on vent.

A mate told me it was from greek mythology and pronounced axe, turned out to be a load of crap and I hit him.
On research it is indeed atche.

That's what the TTS site was for. Why write out what you can hear?

I typically say "aks-ee". I can't stand the attacksey pronunciation, cause the friggin' second "a" isn't after the "t" people . As I understand it, it's the "atch-ee" or "atch-ay" as stated.

I don't know where or how I came to say a-taxe, but I just did.
Interesting though, I've always wondered about this.

I've never tried to pronounce this out loud. On seeing the thread title (but before reading the thread), I was thinking just... axe. More or less. I tried "at axe" but that sounded wrong just because there's no vowel between the t and x.
I'm happy to know that it's actually pronounced "aa-che" (using Spanish/Basque che, so it'd sound like "aa-chay") and should I ever find myself trying to express the fact that I'm getting stomped by an aatxe in real life, people will understand what I'm trying to say. They may not know what an aatxe really is, but at least they won't think I'm being flattened by an axe.
Yeah, or this. Maybe even "demon cow."

I am a firm believer that words should be spelled how they sound, so I just say AT-AXE.
Works for me.

And it isn't spelt Ataxe.
Upon first seeing the name and trying to pronounce it, I just said "axe".
Upon actually looking at it, I think I tried to pronounce it as spelt (Aat-xe), obviously that provide difficult without a vowl between the t and x.
Largely I pronounce it "atch", as I'm a little dubious about the final "e" and how that should be pronounced.
Previously I wrote ætʃeɪ, but it might just be ætʃ (that's how I've pronounced it for a very long time).
For those too lazy to read the IPA page on the wikipedia, I'm saying it's either "atch-ay" or "atch". This post would indicate the latter.

I myself pronounce it Aats - ke (short e) Seems to make sence the way it's spelled

I always thought it as Ah-Taxi. Good to know what a more correct pronunciation may be though. I hate getting things wrong.

One problem - people keep talking about the Basque pronunciation, but the Aatxes are not in Spain (or France), it's Tyria - so how is Aatxe pronounced in "Tyrian"?
On a side note - I wish the folks at ANet would supply an official pronunciation guide for the game. For example, Nebo Terrace - is it Neb-oh or Nee-boh or Nee-boo or what?

'Attics' (the plural of 'attic'), even though I know the correct pronunciation, I've always used this way.
Most of the time, since they don't drop their pink goo for me, it's "Motherf***ing Worthless Moo-Cow" or some other derogatory nonsense.
