Hi all, im a newbie to these forums. So i am not sure if this was the right area to post this.

I am buying a new laptop, in October (with the release of Windows 7) and am looking to run guild wars on it and still be able to work on it and let me still work smoothly with it installed.

Here is a link to the laptop website.

http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/stor...y_ oid=-27403.

'Click for more information' to see all the specs

Please could you tell me if all the specs are what is required to run Guild Wars, withought messing up my laptop.

Thanks for your time

It was looking good until I saw this; "UMA Intel GL40." The price is nice, but you will have a lot of issues playing Guild Wars on it.

Yes I do not recommend UMA Intel GL40 at all. Is it possible to upgrade it? Like get any other graphic cards for laptops?

I dont know, any other reccomendations for another laptop under £400 which will run GW will be appreciated.

Plus will GW not work at all with this kind of graphics card ?

I dont believe (I could be dead wrong, however) any laptop under 400 would be able to run anything but runescape.

Your gonna end up with a crappy GMA by intel with that price point. For god's sake even the UI on windows 7 might have a GMA/GL screaming for mercy.

Which shows, again, that Intel doesn't give a crap about their graphics division, and they don't take anything seriously/live in the real world.

laptops are notoriously bad at playing games even old ones/low specs ones like GW specially ones that have an Intel graphics controller, they arent even proper cards. your gonna want to buy either a desktop or a laptop that cost $1000+. so im afraid so.

Whilst I would recommend getting a laptop with ATI or nVidia graphics if you want to regularly play GW on it, the GL40 should play GW just fine, despite what you're hearing.

I have a laptop with a T7100 and intel X3100 graphics, and I can run GW in all areas except the most intensive (e.g. Kamadan) at close to max settings. You don't get any anti-aliasing with the Intel graphics. BTW, I've also been running Windows 7 RC on it quite happily ...

However, that laptop has a 17" screen, which presumably has a higher resolution than my 1280x800. It's also got a slower CPU, which will also hurt you.

The Dell (with GF9300) is much better suited - it's got a very fast CPU, and the GF9300 will be sufficient. I would recommend the 1280x800 screen in a 15.4" form factor, but that's up to you.

Remember, that £379 is the base price, which is a T6670 and Intel 4500MHD graphics - it doesn't include the GF9300. You need to go in and customise to get the actual price. If the only change you make is to add the nVidia graphics, it jumps to £449.

I'm not sure you realize that that 379 price is for the base model with the Intel Integrated graphics. The GeForce graphics would cost extra.

Most 400 (pound) laptops are going to have low-end graphics - usually integrated. However, you can play GW on these machines - you just need to set the graphics level down low (and it may get a bit choppy).

But, in any case DON'T GET any form of INTEL graphics! They may make great cpu's but they can't get the graphics thing right to save their lives. You would find that GW worked OK on an Intel machine until you got to certain areas where it would choke solid. There are work-arounds and things you can do, which are in a sticky on these forums somewhere, but, the best thing is to just avoid Intel graphics. There are lots of laptops with ATI integrated graphics and ATI or nVidia discrete graphics.

I've played gw maxed out on an old Dell laptop with a GMA 950 64 MB, no problems at all. But that was just one laptop one time, who knows, might have been a rare occasion.

However, don't get that laptop of you plan to play GW on it, disaster waiting to happen.

Ok thanks for all the advice everyone, much appreciated !

I did realize £379 was only the base price, so ill have to mess around with the purchases a bit and try too get it around £400

Just too confirm, the Dell laptop with the Geoforce graphics would run guild wars fine and still be a powerful laptop ??

Thanks,

Edit:

Checked around as you rightly said before adding the geoforce graphics bumps the price to £450 ...

So my dad (working with pc's) customized it too everything that will last it a while. So added geoforce graphics and a better processor it came out at £580 plus delivery...

I will wait until Christmas and add Christmas money too the Kitty if this laptop will supply my needs . Which are

Run Guild Wars smoothly.
With Guild Wars installed my laptop will still work fast and Powerful...

If someone can confirm this laptop will fulfill my needs please tell me and i am more than happy too wait

It doesn't work like that, all hardware in the UK is expensive, because

1 we import it all
2 we have a 15% tax on top of price, (normally 17.5%)

@ JammyJames

I went to that dell link you posted a few posts back, if you can afford it id recommend

256 MB NVIDIA® GeForce 9300M GS Graphic Card
15.4" Premium WXGA+ (1440 x 900) Display with TrueLifeTM
2Gb or RAM minimum, id recommend 4Gb but you will not be running a 64bit operating system so its overkill.

( you will notice a difference in screen with this )

7200 RPM hard drive with Free Fall Sensor up to 250GB

I made dell put a 7200 rpm into my XPS laptop, the 5400 is to slow espically if you want to be gaming.

I would also state that, you would be best not to get windows 7 installed straight up, incase there are issues with it at GW, more to the point, issues with the drivers and the game.

Remember that at xmas/ new year you may get a good deal, with sales etc, as newer hardware will be out by then.

LOL! By Christmas, that laptop will be old news, if still available. No sense wasting time on it now - by December there will be newer, faster, cheaper ones.

The 9300M is an excellent low power solution. It will run GW at decent settings with acceptable framerates, as well as fully accelerate HD video and audio playback. That is a good choice.

That processor is also an excellent performer. All around, that looks like an excellent budget notebook.

My brother has that graphics chipset in his laptop and he has been very happy with it, don't expect to play new graphics intense games with it, but for GW and other older games it runs great.
