State of game?

I'm an old R9 (i think) gw vet and havent played in a few years. I'm just wondering if people still play this game.
I was thinking of re-installing it again but not sure if it's worth it to pick up the xpansion packs and all if it's a dead game.
If anyone can remember ranger spikes and boon monks (around the time i stopped playing) and can tell me if the game is still as interesting as those days.
Thank you

I take it rank 9 is a big time LOL nowadays. I dont think im ready for grinding tombs again.
I could look in the forums but it is quite overwhelming coming back to it all.
Are the skills from nightfall and eon necessary with the current builds out there? I just want to know if i should bother playing until i get the expansions.

Interesting build wise/variants like in 05/06, nope, not even close, regarding the playerbase Heroes Ascent now consists of about only 2 full districts.

Tombs no longer ='s ha. R9 isn't a joke. No 1 has maxed it yet. The addition of the battle isles is now where ha is. Tombs= pve farming area now.

What I hate to tell you is that the PvE aspect of the game has fallen off the cliff because PuG's are a thing of the past due to bad builds/players and the addition of heroes in Nightfall. But since you are r9 you probably won't be doing PvE. If you are into the lore events in the game will probably have an impact on GW2
EOTN is pretty fun for a play through, a plus is the open sandbox environment that replaces the previous games linear progression and there are many challenging dungeons to explore. Finally you need the game to access the Hall of Monuments with which you can save titles gathered in your playing history, these are going to be used in GW2 to give you extras.
The game itself isn't dead per se, but it isn't what it used to be sadly
hope this, long winded post, helps

Thanks for the responses guys but it seems there has been quite a few changes. None of these names mean anything to me.
I just have one last question.
I have a bunch of birthday gifts on all my characters from 1-4 years old.
How much are they worth 1-4?

As for PvP, yes you need the skills from all the campaigns to compete on an equal basis. Most of the longer-term players are no longer active in the game, they either didn't like some of the changes (format and/or skill-wise) or just got bored after so long. There are a lot of new players and most PvP areas are busy. GvG has automated tournaments with a Monthly playoff.
You can check out the wiki info http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Tournament
Install the game and try it out. The worst that will happen is you will quit again.

Dakka that helped big time. Although i can see myself buying the expansions for gw2. Did the new expansions unlock new core/elite skills for all the classes? If that's the case then yeah i probably don't stand much chance at the moment. I never really enjoyed the pve much so i guess it will be just for the skills..
I left this game because of top 10 burn out and yeah because of how they ruined our strategies with the nerf bats. You always take it personally when you invest time into it. Bah whatever that whine ended years ago.
I want to keep it a little more casual this time and i remember the fun i had with the horrible pugs in randoms, it's like a poker match every time.
Time to check out the build section

The game did get pretty crazy for a while. Before the most recent set of nerfs, power attack was the meta. No... seriously (look up the old warrior's endurance)

Alot of concepts behind old builds have been used, just with different skills dependant on the buffs/nerfs. People still play IWAY, Ranger-spike, blood-spike, and more. R9 is certainly nothing to be laughed at, and will allow you to get into almost any PuG group, although I dont recommend PuGing. PvE now takes a bigger role in the game than PvP does, if you are looking to get back into PvP, make sure you own all the games, then go out and look for a guild (these forums are a good start).

Well, i dont know if i got older or just overplayed this game in the past but it just doesnt do it for me anymore. I'm gonna leave some reasons why and i hope it doesnt come off as whining. I never did, but now things are out of hand.
I remember inventing the fragility/virulence spike, testing out ranger spikes before it ever became a fotm, creating the first fiesable illusionary weaponry build. Hell i even remember rolling 8 smite mo/w with KD/signet (which worked until they increased the lords hp) and wrecking the early guild lords in GVG without even attacking one player. All were ripped off and modified by other more organized guilds or whatever but it didnt matter, innovation was a two way street.
Besides my gloating, what i'm trying to get at is that this game used to require imagination and ingenuity.
All i see now is the same old over-used builds. Touch rangers, KD/aftershock sorc, Bunny thumpers and friends.
Then you have the ridiculous looking anorexic assassin. The new armor they made for him with the cliche blades all over (seriously unrealistic it would slice into your neck and many other body parts while moving) looks like it was made for kids who would say "omg this guy is so bad ass lemme go farm a million ectos" and to make matters worse they threw a whole bunch of unbalanced skills his way. So you get KD, stance stolen with an old war skill or something new im not sure, dotted, i think i was even dazed and killed literally in 3-4 seconds. Solo. WTF.
So i decided to get out of randoms because i would just get frustrated. I tp to tombs or whatever its called now, and what do i see? IWAY and the same old stupid builds everyone hated before. No sign of the elitist pricks i played nightly with, no signs of any life at all. Only one thing left to do.
I logged off, deleted the game and mumbled a prayer to a once great idea.
You can feel the difference now. There is no more love in the game. The beautifully sculptured skills and balances. The constant need to evolve and try new builds. Now if you're a new player and not up to date with the meta, you just go online and copy a template. So you get a crap load of noobs not even knowing how to play the game or understanding the beauty of it. They just roll the tried and true. Enjoy the easy kills and call themselves l33t.
I guess Anet is working on gw2. I hope they put the same care into it as they did in part 1. Until then, i'll be in retirement playing single player offline games. No balance issues, no annoying op, and no noobs telling me how to play with an account younger than my youngest pvp char.
Take my grandpa comments with a grain of salt. GW will always have a place in my heart. It was a phenomenal game. See you all in the next!

not much of a game anymore in that respect, so I can see your point.
