1. Zaishen quests, bounties, and battles rewarding z-coins 2. Zaishen menagerie 3. Makeover and Extreme Makeover Credits for purchase 4. Name changes for purchase 5. Free in-game storage tab, with the option to buy more tabs 6. Nicholas the Traveler and his gifts 7. Account-wide Hall of Monuments setting 8. Cheap 5-slot equipment pack, with the option to earn others |
2. 7/10- Not a big pet guy, but it wasn't a bad thing.
3. 9/10-I enjoyed using the makeover credits, which in my opinion were reasonably priced at $2 a credit, but the extreme makeovers seemed a bit much just to change your gender. Plus, most of my male character's names wouldn't look to good on a female, and I'm not paying $15 bucks just to change my character's name.
4. 3/10-See the end of #3
5. 6/10- I would have bought all of the tabs for five dollars each, but never $10 each. I understand that Anet needs money, and I'm happy to throw it their way, but I need to to feel like a worthwhile purchase.
6. 10/10- Something to look forward to every week.
7. 10/10- It's what I've wanted it to be in the first place.
8. 8/10- In my opinion, they shouldn't require as many zcoins, but that's just because I don't really have a main character to focus on.
I hope the next content update surpasses the quality of the April one.

Z quest was fun at first but it is stupid now. I mean come on ANEt has been repeating the same quests and mission over and over

All hail Linsey. I don't have sufficient data to know whether or not I want her designing a game from the ground up, but I can say this: give the girl a set of fixed objectives and a team to manage, and she will exceed expectations. That's a great employee right there.

i guess it was nice and all but compared to what im seeing of aion on the beta weekends.... playing guild wars is like entering a pro auto race with a pinto.
its just slightly different stuff in the same old style. granted i did the new stuff for a week or two while doing other things in game... but thats it.
when i picked up factions i read about alliance battles and was extremely disappointed with what it really was. i havent played wow at all, but it seems like it used to have world pvp and aion has it done better apparently.
it was a good update and all... but it seems like something that should have been in the game a long long time ago.

I don't mind them repeating, because usually by the time they come around again, some more of my toons are in a position to take the Z-Mission.

1. Zaishen quests, bounties, and battles rewarding z-coins
I like it a lot, fun to go to old forgotten areas in the game, and often with pugs. I am busy earning my third heavy bag from pve alone. Just too bad the quests are getting repeated.
2. Zaishen menagerie
Im almost done getting a complete collection of lvl20 pets, looking forward to take a walk in the zoo. But my main is a nec, and my ranger isnt using pets much. I wish for a small pets boost, improving them a bit, making beastmaster worth it. Not too big ofc, not too unbalanced.
3. Makeover and Extreme Makeover Credits for purchase
Its nice to have them, i might buy a makeover some day.
4. Name changes for purchase
Not going to pay for that option, I'd rather just delete and remake the char (wont happen with my GWAMM char ofc)
5. Free in-game storage tab, with the option to buy more tabs
Much appreciated although I wholehartedly hated the shop for a while for making it so troublesome to acquire.
6. Nicholas the Traveler and his gifts
Fun addition. Its a challenge to figure out the best ways to farm for these items. I love the myst tonics.
7. Account-wide Hall of Monuments setting Nice enough but i already have my titles on 1 char, the rest have no maxed titles at all lol.
8. Cheap 5-slot equipment pack, with the option to earn others
Very useful, saves room in storage and ordinary bags.
All in all 8/10.

Zaishen Menagerie was epic fail. Pokemons FTL.
Haven't been there since my first visit which was at the day it was released.

It mostly works for me.
I don't do the Zaishen quests every day and the pre-searing huntsman is another neglected feature.
But I haven't missed a week of the traveller yet.
And last week he gave me the one item I wanted the most. [<3 My Gwen Doll.]
The account wide HoM is something I tend to overlook, I don't spend much time there anyway. xD
The menegerie is nice, personally I don't use it much.
Overall, there's some things that could be done differently.
[Gender change + Name change pack. >__o¿]
But it works well enough for now. :]

2. See 1
3. Why?
4. Why?
5. "Jump thru hoops to get your free storage tab." "Oh, so sorry, your account tied to another account." "What you talking about? This is only account I have." " Prove it." "After 4 years and a couple of moves, you say prove it. Forget it, lived this long without, will continue to."
6. Now I have a character supporting her own habits in pre.
7. Benefit?
8. Would prefer to have had a "closet" in HoM, than having to carry all my armor around. So I just delete what I am not wearing, except head pieces, once dedicated.
Let's see, 8 items with 1 that I use. So I guess 1 of 8.

2. Ugh, went there only once, never used it again.
3. I'm happy with how my characters look.
4. Same.
5. Yeeeaaah... free storage tab was okay, but character slots cost less than additional tabs and give more storage space.
6. I go to him once in a full moon, when I'm bored as hell.
7. Not a title grinder, sorry.

So, mixed reviews so far; although people acknowledge that some of the update did appeal to them, did meet expectations...although the paid content seemed overpriced, or downright unneeded.
Several people have already mentioned this, then: What could August bring, based on this? Can we guess at the ways we'll be invited to replay the games some more? (The retroactive Factions and Heroes of Tyria books haven't really done it for me...).
For instance, the Zaishen Menagerie is a small composite of all of the areas in the games--all the habitats for the critters--stitched together. Is this a preview of how a small team with very limited resources might design a new quest or mission area (by taking already-extant map, rotating it, and piecing it together with other ones (lookin' at you' dungeons)?
Is it possible that some kind of other enticements are needed to replay the content?
For those of you not thrilled with the Z-coins and their rewards, what could induce you to redo missions, quests, and dungeons?
If you're not into the stylists and name changes, is there some other cosmetic content that you would either quest for or pay for? (I, for instance, would like characters to be able to wear the armor skins of other classes).
If not into Nicholas and his travels: would you work toward other rewards? He is, after all, easing the COST of grinding for the sweet, party, and drunk titles, by providing those things to us.
I'm genuinely curious how we see this progressing. Feel free to include other updates recently as evidence, if you like.

apart from his random schedule, nicholas isnt exactly an evolution of gameplay. now gw has its own source of 'collect 5 batwings' like every other mmo. id say that was a step backwards.

I can't really speak for the good of the game. As for me, zquests started out interesting then got boring. I did enough of them to get each of my toons a 10 or 15 slot bag, and unlock the moss spider. Now I don't bother looking at whats there anymore. I keep some pvp zquests on the toon most likely to do that pvp but it doesn't actually make me do anything new.
I liked the menagerie. Added every pet there. Never visited it again. Did not get any makeovers, although it is a good idea for people desperate to change things.
I like the free tab, and the option to purchase more. I intended not to, but ended up buying 2 more because I'm compelled to keep every collectible item I get now. I like the idea of nicholas, and that he makes people farm in areas they never farm in. It spreads people out around all the games. I don't particularly like how rare the minis he gives out are, it seems like we should be getting at least 1-3 a month new in game based on how many accounts get things, but I never see any for sale or hear of any dropping.
Imho account wide hom is the best part of the update. I can finally display my ldoa and survivor in the hall of my gwamm, although I'm the only person who will ever see it.

2) Eh. It's great that it's there. I always wanted to be able to keep and switch my pets around without completely losing them entirely, so cheers. I haven't actually really used it yet, and I'm not a Pokemon trainer, so I don't spend all my time trying to fill it up or anything.
3, 4, 5) Again, great that it's there (even though I am more of a get-it-right-the-first-time, if not then delete-sort of person) for those "just in case" sort of things, but I don't like the way its implemented. It's expensive, why couldn't it use in-game gold?; I haven't used it yet.
6) The same with number one. Rehashing old content and calling it "new". Can't be bothered.
7) THANK you!! That really should've been there from the start.
8) Same with 3, 4, 5. Good that they give you extra options that really aren't that necessary; the way they went about it is less-than-stellarly.
In the end, I feel as if the April Update was just...I don't know. Not that great. It looked like they just needed some way to keep people in the game, so they dangled a little carrot in front of them: added some more grind and some new pointless things to "collect", and called it a day. It didn't really make any major change of the way I play or feel the game, nor do I feel it really brought anything new to the table for me. Rehashed old stuff; I'm still bored and ultimately don't play anymore.
Wondering what they're going to do for the next one, though.

From the way Regina has been wording her statements on her wiki talk page I wouldn't hold my breath. It looks like it's going to get pushed back.
Also, in the following quote the Dev Team promised more communication between them and players before content updates.....and considering that we've heard nothing, I'm assuming there will be nothing.

There's still at least 2-3 weeks before the next scheduled update is released, plenty of time for them to come out and officially make a statement. TBH the XTH would be on the bottom of my priority list, considering it offers nothing in the way of added or improved content within GW.

Charging what, $15 for a name change and $10 for some appearance changes, was the stupidest idea ever.
I mean really, THAT MUCH? Hell, I'd be confused if they had made it more than $5, but $15 and $10? What a joke.

A-Net has had 4 months to work on another solid update and now there is talk of no update this month. Fix some pvp for once FFS, God knows HB could use it.
So much for promises made by them.

I second this. PvP needs an update. A big one. PvE had their big new content update, now fix things that have needed fixing for months.

The packs aren't worth the grind. Some of the other stuff was okay, but I haven't played in a couple of months now and don't really feel any desire to currently.

I can't believe that people still whine about a $10/15 character do-over. If you don't like it, then don't use it. Most games charge a stupid amount of money to do minor changes, especially name changes.
I think that the update was good, but in some ways really incredibly late. I don't understand why ArenaNet decided to wait four years to implement a "pet stable". By this time, Beastmaster builds are nerfed over and over making the idea of collecting pets mostly something for high-level characters to do out of boredom.
Zaishen quests and such are fun for a while, but you can tell that anybody that does them over time gets really bored of them pretty quick. It doesn't seem like many people do them out of fun, but they just want the z-coin reward since they can turn into an equipment pack. As the market slowly gets its fill of equipment packs, it's going to turn into another unused feature.
I didn't mind the Nicholas the Traveler so much until this week. The skale farm is so boring and tedious that I wonder if ArenaNet did it as some kind of social experiment, like trying to see how much people are willing to grind.

In the long run, I think the update has been ok. Nicholas is still fun (both of them), the Menagerie has lost it's touch but it is still useful here and there. And the Zquests, well they are now just there for an extra reason to get Legendary Guardian. And when I feel like Vanquishing, grabbing an explorable bounty is worth it.
There has been some talk. But not anything more than "PvP love" and that HB will get looked at. Both stated by Linsey.

The option is there after several years of the ANet line being that they didn't think it was important to enjoy the game. Now its up to each player to decide whether it's important enough to pay for. The majority are probably saying 'no', but there are probably enough that aren't for it to have been worth the effort.
(I do think ANet possibly made a miscalculation with the extra storage tabs costing as much as extra characters (ie mules), though. Rather than making claims about the extra convenience making up for it, they possibly should have offered two tabs for $10 instead of one.)

One of the reasons behind the high prices is that the lower the price, the higher the proportion of the sale goes into overhead. However, this could be worked around by offering things in bundles.

Don't know if fixing PvP in a 4+ year old game is worth the pain. But, GW1 PvP must be the biggest lessons learned for ANET to incorporate in GW2. They can't fubar that. With GW1, expectations on PvP were not built up. So, people liked what they saw initially. In GW2, its going to be a whole different story.
That said, PvP definitely can use some updates. But, will that bring players back in the game? Highly doubtful. I think, in reality, GW community just needs a small break from GW. The grind got introduced in GW because of public demand of sticking w/ the game.
So, the best approach for ANET right now is to ignore our usual QQ and thereby stopping any further WOWfication of GW. That way ANET will be able to spend more time in thinking about new creative ideas that will shake the foundation of conventional wisdom in online gaming world.
Hence. long term option for ANET is to stay put on GW.

Nicholas and the Big Z's are ideas along the right path, but the ultimate problem is that they just encourage more solo farming. The Z-missions are a bit better for encouraging groups, but the bounties and Nicholas's gifts (especially the items for the gifts) are solo-farmable. Overall, I'd rank it more of a success than the ludicrousness of the Underworld, at least.
The shop options aren't really big deals. 99% of the players may not ever buy them, but at least it shuts up the whiners who want to change their character's name but don't want to lose their work. For the minimal amount of effort required to implement these options and their non-intrusiveness to the rest of the game, I'd call it a success. A small one, sure, but it couldn't really go wrong. Guild Wars has not become a game for the rich.
For the other updates: I love having more storage, including the new equipment packs, but I don't care too much about the account-Hall bit or the Zaishen Menagerie.
Overall, I'd say it was a good update. Not one that was worth holding up other updates, but a good one nonetheless.

Actully, on the topic of Zquests, I always thought it would be useful to implement a 4th "Zaishen Vanquish" flag. Would be intresting to see more vanquishing pugs.

Everyone will buy GW2 as soon as one reads good reviews about it even if GW1 is left completely broken. And that same person will see GW2 being broken within a year or two of its release. And that person again will hope for fixes of GW2 while waiting for GW3 or a new expansion. Its the lifecycle of a game and QQing is our birthright.
Fluffiliscious
1. Zaishen quests, bounties, and battles rewarding z-coins
I've only recently begun doing these but I enjoy them quite a bit. It's made getting into PUGs for some usually empty missions a lot easier. It's also helping me along with my Guardian titles. Plus, extra cash and junk.
2. Zaishen menagerie
I have never really bothered with pets too much as my main is an ele. It's made me more interested in capping pets, though.
3. Makeover and Extreme Makeover Credits for purchase
I've not used this but I think it's a good idea. I can't tell you how many times I've read posts here and there about wanting this added. I've been thinking about updating my ele a bit as I've played her the most and would like to change some minor things.
4. Name changes for purchase
In the past, when I've gotten tired of a char's name, I've deleted them. I haven't used this yet, either, but it's nice to have the option instead of deleting.
5. Free in-game storage tab, with the option to buy more tabs.
Love, love, love this. Awesome idea, Anet!
6. Nicholas the Traveler and his gifts
Nic has taken me to places that I haven't been in a very long time. I love the gifts even if most people think they're "crap". I wouldn't have hardly anything points in my party or sweets titles without him. Also, I got a mini brown rabbit that I think is the most cutest thing ever.
7. Account-wide Hall of Monuments setting
Brilliant idea, to me, as well. I, obviously, have the most titles on my main so it's awesome to be able to see some of those accomplishments across all of my characters.
8. Cheap 5-slot equipment pack, with the option to earn others
Love this, as well.
I was very excited about the update when I read about it. I haven't utilized everything added just yet but I can see myself doing so and I'm glad that I have the option. I commend Anet on their hard work. 9/10

And....to be honest, I get closer and closer to being done.
- PvX is a wasteland because there haven't been skill updates in so long, there's no reason for people to make or alter builds.
- Guru is getting depressing (hell, even people who used to defend Anet are getting pissed and mods are letting people get away with saying some serious shit to Anet employees).
- And the wiki has lost a ton of activity too. With the wiki's new feedback forum, people aren't even going to be able to talk to the devs anymore....not that they ever respond anyway.
Basically, it comes down to this....the day I quit all of those sites + GW, is the same day that there's no hope of me buying GW2. There are just too many other games out there and Anet has pissed me off too many times.
Mordakai
fanboy talking here, so all the cynics can disregard.
So far, I've bought:
Makeover pack with 5 credits
Zaishen Menagerie unlock (finally can get any pet I want, any color, any evolution, without grinding to level 20. yeah!)
Storage upgrade (total whim purchase, couldn't be bothered to move stuff around and said "screw it, I'm buying an extra pane!")
I love the zquests, not so much for the equipment packs (although those are nice), but because now Hard Mode missions are easy to find groups for.
I'm slowly working my way to Guardian, all thanks to this update, so the long term effects are very real.
We'll see after everyone gets there 20 slot pack whether the missions stay full or not. ArenaNet may have to add some new items to be purchasable by z-coins.
I also want to add I love the Traveler. It's like getting 5 birthday presents every week, you never know what you're going to get!

Not necessarily. I like to think that I'll end up buying GW2, but I have a large number of friends that wont be. They're gone. And by gone, I mean off the forums, off wiki, off PvX, off GW entirely. They got fed up and they're done.
And....to be honest, I get closer and closer to being done.

And when all the reviews come out saying how great GW2 is, we will see you and all your friends there. Talk is is cheap but if the game is good all the naysayers will be there you can bet on that, maybe with a name change to protect themselves from people who will say i told you so.

I really, really hope I come back....but I just don't know. Oh, and trust me, those friends I mentioned aren't coming back. I have friends who will, but the guys I'm talking about are done.

I don't see what you think you're proving here, as I stated in the post that you quoted that I hope I come back. And no....I wont change my name.

I second this. PvP needs an update. A big one. PvE had their big new content update, now fix things that have needed fixing for months.

HB: Degenerate meta. Everything has to have a sin secondary for mobility.
TA: Degenerate meta. Rock, paper, scissors.
HA: Better than the others at the moment.
GvG: Degenerate meta. Izzy's vaunted new mechanics have now been exploited AGAIN.
We've reached the point where the two AT formats are completely unplayable. I appreciate breaking things and gaining a competitive advantage as much as the next guy, but every major team format except HA is a total disaster at the moment. RA is just as bad.
Stuff that's obviously OP needs to be fixed. Refuse to fix this stuff and people will leave. It's pretty simple.
