Varesh *Possible Spoiler*
Evasion Twenty
Sorry if this belongs in NightFall Explorers, thought this was more lore-related to the characters of GuildWars.
Is it intended and more ironic that Varesh was introduced with the last name "Ossa"?
Seeing as the Crystal Desert connects both Tyria and Elona, I find it quite amusing that the "Savior" of Elona who defeated both Palawa Joko, and ventured to other distant lands in search of a place to settle down. Not only that but he is a hero being in...well...Hero's Ascent.
Varesh is the opposite, she tends to bring *SPOILER ALERT* to Elona and tends to rebirth the fallen god Abaddon. Not only that but she is pure evil.
No, it's not a dumb question, just seeing if anyone else finds it ironic.

Quote:
Centuries ago, Turai Ossa saved the nation of Elona by defeating the undead lord Palawa Joko. In gratitude, the populace praised him as the warmarshal of Kourna... and the nation accepted him as their king. Since that time, all of Kourna’s warmarshals have been direct descendants of Turai. Varesh Ossa is the latest inheritor of that legacy—and like her ancestor, she has a vision for the future of the nation. Varesh Ossa is a brilliant commander, a loyal Kournan who instills loyalty and dedication in her troops. Like her ancestor Turai, she has also shown an interest in more spiritual concerns. Elonians see much of Turai’s greatness in Varesh. By using political acumen, her charismatic presence, and the influence of her family legacy, Varesh has rallied the Kournan army, inspiring them as Turai Ossa did long ago. Some loyal Elonians hope that she can unify the nation again, restoring it to the greatness of its past. Others fervently hope that she does not share his madness. History will see how well Varesh succeeds on her own spiritual quest. It is revealed after Jokanur Diggings that Varesh is attempting to cause Nightfall, by releasing the |

The OP knew they were related... He just wanted to know if anyone else saw the irony.Yes I saw it as well.

I irony mainly comes from how you then get Palowa to help you. Theres too much irony because now once you've helped Palowa we learn he rises to power too. You find alot of times in the story where things are flippped around in terms of trust not only in nightfall with the istanis, kournans, centaurs, undead etc but in the other campaigns too.
Varesh was very passionate about her god and she did what she thought was best for her nation. Theres been some great character development in particular these side characters.

The irony is that both of them, Turei and Varesh went in pursuit of something otherworldly that they thought would help their people. And both were wrong and met their demise on those pursuits.

Asking whether it is ironic and thus having no real lore discussion means it belongs in Riverside by technical terms. Moving.

I failed to see the point you tried to make here. What's irony about her last name being Ossa? Is this some kind of pun?
fenix
Varesh Ossa = ruined the world
Turai Ossa = Ghostly Hero = saved the world from Palawa Joko.
Ironic.

I'm either slow or sleepy or brainfreezed right now. But Varesh and Turai are related. One was a hero and another was a great grandchild who wanted to live up to the family name but her ambition and her power led her to the dark side. Isn't this kind of thing fairy common in fantasy/scifi/fiction/lore in general? I mean, hello, Star Wars Luke/Vader?
Call me a fool but please help me see the point of this thing. XD

Well, Luke/Vader was more the other way around. 'Sfar as we know, the Skywalker name wasn't really known for anything before Anakin.
(Although one wonders how such a poor family ended up with a name like 'Skywalker', but I digress.)

This is not anything people haven't already realized before.
I hurd gwwikiz wuz guud.
Irony is part of what makes lore and writing come to life. It's one of those literary tools of the trade. The funny part is that I feel the whole Ossa/Elona lore is actually one of the weaker lore points of GW, because there are several inconsistencies between what the Sages tell you in the Crystal Desert, and actual history of Abbadon and Elona/Ossa.

Even NPC's in the game comment on this...
"Vabbi Guard: The general, yes. But if you speak of all Kournan leadership...well, I have to disagree. I do not personally like the direction Varesh is taking her province...and Morgahn has done nothing to stop her.
Vabbi Guard: Don't assume that just because Morgahn follows orders that he agrees with them. Anyone in the military will tell you...obey first, then question. General Morgahn is a loyal man who believes in the good of Kourna. He followed Varesh's father, you know.
Vabbi Guard: Well, in this case, the apple has fallen quite far from the tree. The Ossa lineage is not what it once was."

But both Ossas went off the deep end into fanaticism, and both took advantage of the loyalty of their people, causing them suffering to which the Ossas were blind.
