Hey Everyone. Was thinking about creating an ultimate Upgrade Guide, where we could see EVERY upgrade for EVERY weapon... with the ultimate goal being a general price guide of items.
If I had the help of a few people, I would LOVE to create a priceguide for Guild Wars. I don't know if that project is in works yet, but It would be an important tool to monitor the economy of Guild Wars.
I think the first step here would to collect a listing of every item. The only fair way to do that is with screenshots, or if people write down what they see and turn it into a local place. I would gladly take on the task of gathering the information.
First we could do crafting materials, then weapons, etc etc etc...

This sounds like a good idea, but the price for items is highly variable. This kind of project would require constant maintenance. The best way to maintain it, is to have a price reporting system, where people submit prices they've PAID (or been paid) for items. Not advertized prices. The more submissions for a particular entry, the more accurate it will be.
You would want each entry to have the following:
Name:
Description: (What the item is)
Properties: (what the item does)
# of Submissions: (A rating of how accurate the price is)
Lowest Merchant Price: (Lowest price a Merchant has paid for it)
Highest Merchant Price: (Highest price a Merchant has paid for it)
Avg Merchant Price: (The current average 'going rate')
Lowest Trade Price: (Lowest players have bought/sold the item for)
Highest Trade Price: (Highest players have bought/sold the item for)
Avg Trade Price: (Avg 'going rate' players will buy/sell the item for)
Misc Info: (Other information that affects price/value of an item, like the 'up value' for mods, etc)

We would need probably 3 different prices for each item, NOT one for each variable. For example a Hale Staff Head can be +2 to +30 health ... We could have a price for the +1-+10 \+11-20 \+21-+30.. But that is STILL a lot of work. It would be useful in the end, but like you mentioned would have to be highly flexible.
Also I think merchant price is not only very time consuming, but not worth that time. It's easy to see what a merchant will pay for your item, but much harder to see what other people will pay.

I'd be willing to help out on the buying price of dyes.
I don't sell much stuff. Usually give it to guild members or sell it to them for really low prices which would throw off your price ranges. But if I do sell something to non guild members I'll let you know the prices there too.

Great idea... How do you think you will code this? I think the best way to go is to create an online database in which the user submits his item (submit form), the program then stores it into the database and the user can the query it with a bunch of searching criterions.
I don't think it will be too hard to implement. Sure it's gonna need some work, but it can be done. There are plenty of open-source options that allow creation of PHP and MySQL and get the creations easily on the web.
Xoops is such a piece of software. I'd be willing to help a bit if you need it.
