Max armour is basically the armourset that affords you the most amount of protection you can get: 60 on a caster, 70 on assassins, rangers and dervishes, and 80 on paragon and warrior. Just check the armour piece. No armourset will go beyond that limit regardless of price - 'elite' armoursets are just for looks. If you want extra armour, you'll have to buy insignias that grant you +armour under a certain condition (e.g Herald's Insignia: +10 armour when holding an item; Blessed: +10 armour when enchanted, etc.)

EDIT: Also, different classes have different inherent properties with their armoursets, so 'max' applies only to the base armour.

Max armour is the maximum AL of your classes armour.
Warrior max armour is 80 for example, rangers 70 and Spellcasters is 60.
The only difference between the different armours as well is their
appearance. Obisidian armour, Shing Jea armour, etc all max out at the
same AL for each class.

Armor has an Armor Rating that determines how much damage you will take from most attacks. When you start a character, you are given a set of very low-rated armor. As you move through the game, you will find collectors and craftsmen that will offer armor with a higher rating. When you're far enough into the game, the collectors and craftsmen will have armor that has the highest rating allowed for your profession: 60 for a caster profession, 70 for ranger, dervish, and assassin, or 80 for warrior and paragon. That is "max armor".

Edit: I was a little behind because I stopped to look up the link.

Well to add, there is a difference in "Elite" armor being that they are more expensive and can go in the hall of monuments.

The armor rating is based on armor lvl of 60 I do believe. For every 40 armor that you add you reduce the damage by half. Or likewise if you reduce your armor by 40 you will take twice as much damage.

So if you start with 20 armor level and increase that to 100 armor lvl you will take 1/4th damage

If I cam wrong please correct me. It has been a while since I read the wiki and I do not have access to it from work.

www.wiki.guildwars.com is a great site and it is where most if not all of us have gotten our information.

Was talking in terms of AL, not price
