I just got scammed *warning*
The Air Revenger
well i dont know if this is a popular scam but it can be avoided by being very attentive
well i was selling ectos for 100k and someone opens trade puts up 100k i put up ectos and after i accept he/she click cancel making it seem like i might have money or the trade isnt going through. Well after this happens about 4 times im just trying to get the trade to go through so i just offer and accept and not knowing he puts up 10k and i just scamed myself.
so watch out for this dum scam and make sure you check that its 100k and not 10k.
im guessing because of the way it happened i cant /report because i clicked accept (and he left as soon as he got his ectos) and support never does anything to help so w/e just watch out.

Report him anyway and send screenshots.
My son was scammed out of 100k for presents and because he too was in a hurry, the guy put in 100 gold and my son accepted. We reported him and added the guy to our friends list, he has never appeared online since, so I can assume his account was banned.

This scam has been around for ages, they basicly make it so that your so pissed at the trade canceling they you don't look at the amount. Sorry man, but you feel for one of the oldest scams in the game.

If you report people who intentionally do this especially if they advertise buying at an amount take screen shots and report them. I've done it an support looks into and replies to you. They likely will receive a temporary ban like a month. If they continue to do it and get reported the ban might be longer if not permanent. send support ticket with screen shots and /report. But you'll never get anything back that you lost.

Anet doesn't perma ban accounts for such miniscule trade amounts, well, perhaps including 100k and definitely above, but not below 100k.
If say you got scammed out of a 2k run, nothing will happen to the person that scammed you, unless it was like the 100858975983475th report.

support is a lost cause, i sent the stuff anyway but im not expecting my money back. it not that bad i guess, at least i only lost in-game money and not real money. If anything this might be good lol its made me so mad i dont even want to play gw anymore guess ill take a break and come back later.
so i just talked to the guy i told him i wanted my money back he swore and ignored me, if i cant get him for scaming i can get him for verbal abuse
now that just made my day

Tsk tsk. Learn to check trade before you hit accept.
The worst that would happen to that guy's account is either a mark or a 72 hour ban. Or nothing at all. It was your fault for not checking the amounts.
You won't get anything back from Anet. Period.
Assasin Foxx
Yep not a scam just your fault.
Next time check trade first thats why there is a ACCEPT BUTTON!.

I wish people would stop being bastards and posting just to trash the OP. He made it clear and is well aware that he made a mistake and fell for the scam but people post *just* to reiterate what he already said. Get a grip. What sort of sadistic satisfaction do people get from seizing the opportunity to kick someone when they're down?
And there's no doubt it was a scam. It was just taking advantage of a vulnerability from the other party.

i think the best advice i can give as a trader is assume EVERYONE is a scammer.
always check, double check and triple check everything before you hit that accept button

When someone puts the right stuff in the window and so do you and they cancel it the first time you must automatically become suspicious because that is always the start of a scam. When someone also says it won't go through or something like lag of the sort, this is also a scam because the trade system and the game work as one, the trade system is not going to lag out yet the game be fine.
Just be very careful next time my friend. Always check and never just hit accept after a few canceled trades just wanting to get it done and over with. There are more scammers out there than legit players.
Also this sort of thing isn't new and has been done since the beginning of online games. Things like this date back to diablo 2, probably even further than that.
Scammer always makes it look like there's a problem with the game and makes it cancel every time.
You might also want to try to contact support, you never know you might get lucky, but higher chances say you won't.
Just be more careful is all we can say at this point.

What OP described is a scam, and people do get banned for scamming. Go on and report him.
I actually have a similar story to share. I was selling something like 8 ZKeys for 32k or so at GtoB. A guy comes along and initially puts up 32k and says, "this be my r5 zrank. i want to thank you. here's a present."
He cancels the trade and puts up a mini-Juggernaut and money. While I was pondering how much mini-Juggernauts go for, I noticed that he put up only 3.2k. Although it was pretty obvious at this point, I just told him that he misplaced the amount of money. The conversation that followed went something like,
"Hey, you only put up 3.2k."
"?"
"You are supposed to give me 32k."
"??? click accept"
"..."
"??"
"Seriously..."
"wut"
I canceled trade and saw him run along, advertising buying ZKeys at 10k or something. I told him that if he did not quit trying to scam people, I would report him. He whispered, "????" back before leaving the district.

This is NOT a scam, it's meerly your mistake. NCsoft cant do anything about what happened except POSSIBLY give the guy a three day ban if you provide screenshots of him agreeing to pay 100k and not 10k. NCsoft will not give you your money or ecto's.
subarucar
Your fault if you choose not to check the trade before clicking accept, im sick of seeing this crap on these forums. inb4lock.
Mesmers Are Bad
This same thing happened to me, i was selling ectos in kamadan 23/100k a guy buys 3 batches in quick succession, then, on the fourth shot, he doesn't put up any cash. Needless to say since i wanted to get rid of the ectos and the first three trades were fine i clicked the accept button without checking and got scammed. a few screen shots and a few days later he got suspended for 10 days.
majikmajikmajik
it wasnt a scam in anet's eyes, it was jus a very very foolish and great trade...

Try not to get too discouraged by it. It really does suck that you were taken for 90K, but you've learned a valuable lesson, I would imagine.

Another reason I hate this type of scam is that if you truly forget to empty your inventory or can't accept the gold, people automatically get suspicious and expect a scam after that, which makes you look bad.

Always double check , ectos ... 100k , high end items, are difficult trades, and most of them want to scam. So double and double check , count the money , item or whatever, take your time and then click the accept button.
Sorry for your loss, hope you can recover soon , and don't forget to double check

I'm not saying this from a standpoint of "its all your fault" because ive been there and had it happen to me in many worse ways. But look at it this way, is it really a scam if I happen to buy a 80k mini for 10k? The seller got the amount he wanted, which means it isn't a scam to him. However if he took the time to look on guru or even get a half decent pc from a random person, he would know the value. In the same way if the OP or most of us took the time to look at what is being offered in trade instead of being on a constant GO RED ENGINE GO rush, then we would all be "victims" alot less.
Gigashadow
Agreeing to pay 80K for a mini that you could get elsewhere for 10K, is quite a different situation from someone agreeing to pay you 10K and then putting 100gold in the window hoping you don't notice.
Mad Lord of Milk
You deserved it. Pay attention.

Old, very common scam. Talk to support, they might ban the guy if you took screenshots.
