Brutal Mauling
Evasion Twenty
What purpose does it do?

All it does is make the bear have LESS dps imho, because of the 4-second activation, and does no extra damage.

Since this is an attack skill, some Paragon Shouts and Chants that affect "allies", but not "party members", can be triggered. |
Pets are bad.

From the page of the black bear:
Personally I don't think it's worth it, but it's at least something to consider.

The attack skill that the Black Bear uses is slower than a normal pet attack, causing the Black Bear to have a lower damage per second than other pets (including the Polar Bear). However, it can also trigger effects that requires an attack skill to be used, like some Paragon skills provide. |

Doesn't it lower it's DPS, if you have no shouts or anything? Personally, it should be removed.
Don't discriminate pets!

Though.. bears were introduced in prophecies in 2005 (duh) when paragon shouts weren't a though for another year and a half basically. I wonder if anet had plans for paragon based shouts or chants in the original game or something. Why else would the bear just use a plain skill?

Recall that Brutal Mauling will interrupt Charm Animal, making it difficult to charm a black bear in Pre-Searing. My guess is that the skill was designed for just that purpose. IIRC, black bears don't use that skill in Post when they are charmed.

it was probably just another one of those "we had an idea in mind but were too lazy to implement it or completely remove it so we just left it as is".

You're thinking of Breaking Charm.

Not only does it work with the various shouts/chants, but it can also cause monsters to use interrupt skills like Cry of Frustration. If they use the interrupts on the pet, it leaves you and your team safe from them. Again, not reliable, and not useful for most situations, but it is another thing the skill can do.

WOW is this why people want to charm a bear. It takes forever with a new person cause they simply do not know what "run in the other direction" means so the bear can not use break charm and you get your bear.
This is very hard now. Never was like this before.
So if you put the pre bear into the menagerie then what bear do you get back?
