From what I've seen, the most played classes are Monks and Warriors. From most to least:

1. Monks
2. Warriors
3. Elementalists
4. Necromancers
5. Assassins
6. Dervishes
7. Rangers
8. Ritualists
9. Paragons
10. Mesmers

But why? o.o;

I think Monks are popular because they are a very strong and versatile class, overall. Can heal/prot (highly wanted in any group), can deal good damage (RoJ, CoP, PvE skills), is one of the best farmers (55 and 600/smite).

in a balanced team you often have 2 wariors and 2 monks... that leaves 4 slots for other characters...the most popular class to fill some of those slots are eles... thats why they are 1 2 3 in both pvp and pve....
pve wise id say assassins are only up there for perma sin... and the bottom 3 would have to be rits paras and dervishes because they came out the latest...
the rest of the characters id say would be impossible to say which is played the most so im gonna say they are all jumbled up as equals...

pvp wise id say dervishes and paras are down near the bottom as they are only seen in certain team builds...
rangers have always been a healthy character to add in the mix but even more so now with this new sway garbage...
necros arent as popular with many hex nerfs and stuff (unless bspike)...
with the VoR nerf you will probably only ever see 1 mesmer per team....
assassins will be seen with their 123456 chains in numbers of 2 or 3 usually if they are on a team...
rits are very good support/defense so 1 will usually be on a balanced....

yea....

I disagree with your list... it depends on the format you are observing. I will tell you why some people would play one thing more than others. (mini wall of text beign edited in)

People like defense, and that's what Monks do. Also people usually want them, so you can get accepted a lot into things. Then there is farming.

Warriors... never tried them but I heard they are a good beginner profession. Also people like the image of them probably, with swords and such. And the high armor.

Eles can be a simple "blow shit up" profession combined with massive amounts of energy and good attribute versatility. AoE too. No complicated reason there.

Paragons and Ritualists aren't played much because they suck. Hate to say it, but they are really gimped in PvP since their skills are too weak or situational. Rits have high energy 2-5 second spirits which give up to the ghost as if it's their destiny when only doing their job and weapon spells still suck IMO (you do lose your weapon benefits after all). Paras are pretty situational and just been too nerfed... also I find their elites to be missing that "i'm elite" status, like they are good but not great.

Mesmer is probably not played that much because it is a harder class and they don't deal a bunch of damage.

Necros I don't' really know why anybody would play one aside from MM, but they have a ton of skills and are good for anti-melee and have good elites as well.

Assassins are popular as the Warrior alternative and because people like spiking. Also SF crap in PvE. Also the stereotype about them being ninja like from newbies.

1. Monks well monks are always wanted and people use them to farm since they are easiest class to get ito farming runs and PVP groups with. Also 600/smite makes them popular and one of the two original classes from prophcies that could solo farm easy.
2. Warriors are a simple class you run up and attack stuff about it. When prophcies was the only campiagn there were very few warriors. You had to be good and understand body blocking or your group would die and you would fail. Nows its easy and anyone can do it. Most are stilled retarded in PVP and PVE though.
3. Elementalists simple general caster press 1 2 3 4 5 and kill stuff and its fun because you kill stuff with MAGIC!
4. Necromancers other of the two original solo farming class and rasing minions is cool.
5. Assassins everyone wants to be a stealthy ninja or naruto. 95% are bad and just suck they do not even understand the class. Not a TANk SUPORT DPS good at killing NOT TANKING. Most do not understand this and just shadow step into a group of enemies and frenzy and die in two hits. In PVP if a assassin uses frenzy outside of HB there a free kill because most are to stupied to bring a cancel stance. For PVE the golden chain is jagged strike wild strike death blossom most do not use it and death cahrge and death retreat good way in and out also overlooked and flashing blacks as a elite is goldly since you BLOCK AND WITH DEATHS RETREAT U GET OUT OF DAMAGE AND DO NOT DIE. Also assassins have a bad repuationfor dying why not wanted in groups as much either then perma. Also Permas are used to farm why they wanted but once Shadow form gets killed they wont farm anymore. Like when deadly paradox got nerfed and the Assassin mesmer didnt work until EOTN perma farming was dead because of glyph of swiftness revied it.
6. Dervishes interesting class you can turn into avatars of the god and using a scythe is rare in RPGS also good runners took over for warriors and assassins for being faster and more efficient you get to use A SCYTHE!
7. Rangers should be higher up everyone has one you get to use arrows and pull them out of a magic pouch the ranger has and shoot stuff from a far is fun. Takes skill though to be good at interupting.
8. Ritualists complex class that has no defined role more of a support and good builds take time to design which most people no longer do. Can heal do damage all in one. The change to spirits brought the population up but spirit spamming is not hard. healing and using channeling magic well is and those rits are rare.
9. Paragons use to be godly at start of nightfall then nerfed to death all the good shouts got killed like defensive anthem and spear is okay but the shout combinations are not great a few are godly liek save yourself and theres nothing to fear but most are useless now. Most are used just for the imbagon build.
10. Mesmers the most underplayed due to most people do not understand how they work. The hexes a mesmer useS can destroy players and monster and add pressure through degen its just people are bad and cannot do good skill combinations. The changes to illusion of pain though will probably make people be like OMG IMMA MAKE A MESMER NOW SINCE IT CAN DO 300 DAMAGE AND IF I APPLY IT BEFORE IT ENDS THEY DONT GET HEALED.

You can't really make this kind of list unless you separate it from pve and pvp. Although I guess we can all agree monks are most played.

PvE:

Mesmers aren't that played because people don't understand the class enough to put together a build and paragons are seen as limited in what they can do. I had a pretty successful run recently by a paragon/mesmer to Droks. ;o

My problem with paragons is that they just stand around shouting without much interaction (generally) compared to monks, mesmers, and melee.

Mesmers are pretty flexible due to mesmer's energy, energy management, fast casting, and other utility. However they require knowing what enemies you're about to face and if you're in normal mode or hard mode.

I don't think you can actually make a list like that without some serious usage data from NCsoft. Otherwise, your list is just a guess based upon your own biases and guesswork.

what i tend to see in a group of 8 is:

monk
monk
war
war/ele
ele
necro
derv/sin/para/mes/rang
rit

lately all my groups have had some form of spirit spam (usually a rit, but sometimes a n/rt) which helps a lot when i get aggro'ed as a monk

popularity wise i seem to keep seeing:

1. monk
2. assassin
3. elementalist
4. warrior
5. necromancer
6. ranger
7. ritualist
8. dervish
9. mesmer
10. paragon

I gotta say since Imbagon paragons have increased in population, I'd say that Dervs and mezzies get the least amount of play.

That is actually a pretty easy theory to test, make one of each character and try to join a group for a no specialized Zaishen Quest or bounty (no runs or team farming necessities);

Ive never had problems getting into groups on my Necro (Curses, N/Rt Healer or MM), Monk (the obvious easy Group addition) or Rit (Spirit Spam is easy and can be compared with a faster and more mobile MM).

Id list the PvE professions as;

1. Monk,
2. Elementalist,
3. Necro,
4. Assassin (without Shadow Form the Sin would probably be placed at 9)
5. Warrior,
6. Ritualist,
7. Ranger,
8. Paragon,
9. Dervish,
10. Mesmer

Its a shame about a few of the professions, because good Dervishes, Mesmers or Rangers can make a massive difference between an average and an excellent group.

With the recent changes to ritualist I've noticed a massive upswing in Ritualist activity.

It is becoming nearly impossible to not see two ritualists in a single group often, especially in Cantha. I've seen a team containing four, and of course none of them realized that spirits can't be stacked and all take the same spirits in at the same time...

So I'd say ritualist is now in the top four or five most played, whereas it used to be near the rock bottom.

I would say mesmer and paragons are the least played. Why; alot of people just dont put forth the effort to try to play a mesmer. You have to know how each class works seperatly then combine that with how the mesmer works and use it accordenly. I on the other hand find them to be pretty fun to play with and quite useful.
Paragons Im not really sure of. I see alot of talk saying they are pretty much useless and arent relevant for anything. Never really tried using one myself.

PvE;
1. Monk (tons of farming, everyone needs a healer/protector)
2. Ele (nuker, high damage)
3. Warrior (easy to use, tanking)
4. Necro (MM nuff said)
5. Sin (farming)
6. Ranger (interrupts, running)
7. Derv ("Anything you can do, I can do better")
8. Ritualist (not really sure to be honest)
9. Mesmer (difficult to use)
10. Paragon (virtually useless)
