why do people use spears now?
TaggSilar
i see this fairly often now, though usually in pvp. its usually some combo of shield and spear for a totally unrelated profession such as monk or sin or something like that. why do people use spears now?
Unholy Tank V
Personally, I use it for the extra energy and 20% longer enchants. Or I use it for +60 health, in combination with a shield.
Gift3d
traps, barbs, adrenaline
subarucar
Unconditional energy, Wands only give extra energy under certain conditions, which can be undesirable. E.g. if you are using a +5 energy while above 50% wand for a monk. You are taking damage so you need to heel, you have 5 energy left, you drop below half health, you now have 0 energy and cannot heal.
Warriors (and some others) use them to build adrenaline before going into combat.

Divine Ashes
As part of a defensive set, which includes the +5 energy +30 health spear and +30 health +10 armor vs x shield.
You could also use a sword or axe for the defensive set...whichever suits your purpose.
You could also use +20 enchanting...again...whichever suits your purpose.

^ that.
Its about a defensive shield set. You'll find that people swap to a wand and offhand set to cast spells sometimes then swap back.

stuntharley
Defensive set, and its good for hitting trappers. Better than sword/axe

If you are a caster, you will probably need a defensive set, shield+caster weapon. The caster weapon can be a sword, axe or spear. Spear can be a better choice for what other people said: hit trappers, remove RoF and RoD from foes with minimal drawbacks, charge Bonetti's, trigger barbs and mark of pain (in PvE).
If you are a warrior you can use a spear to build up adrenaline from distance (for example when you run hammer builds)

This is probably just me but sometimes i accidently click on an enemy as a monk, and start running towards it if i wield a sword or axe, but if i have a spear, most of the time i just hit them w/o moving, therefore i do not lose position!
Darcy
@Dallcingi - you win.
That is the reason why casters use spears now. Originally, casters used axes (Totem Axe) and then with inscriptions, added swords to the mix. Everyone now prefers spears as it is a distance weapon and prevents your caster from joining the melee accidently.

Plus Voltaic spears look pretty lush so a lot of people prefer to use that over a sword/axe that doesnt look as good.

heres why ppl use spears now No 1 the VS is very nice but with the corect mods, 20%enchant and zealous 1 energy on hit and i have the power inscription with the right sheild mods they can run of killl the foes they need to. U might wanna just checkout some builds from pvxwiki read about the weapons neeeded for build its very eyeopening

spears are used to gain energy without having to subject to a condition. people used to use axes and swords before night fall where we started getting spears, at which point we switched to spears since they are more flexible, since you dont have to move and you can do at least 1-3 damage.
