You have to make sure you have a PlayNC account with your GW account attached to that to change your GW password. If you don't remember your PlayNC password it's easy to get back if you remember the account name, through emails and such. If you never made or linked one, simply enter the online store in GW and set up your PlayNC account, it's free.

or you can log into guildwars and click "edit account" then change password, type in your current pword then the new one 2 times and violla password changed. ty yw.

Is that a new feature? When I changed my password I had to go through PlayNC...this wasn't an option... but Now that i check..you can do it this way now.

I believe it depends on whether or not your account is linked to PlayNC or not.....

and ive got a problem
a while back i stopped playing gw and gave my account to a friend
he changed the password and when i asked for it back the other day he couldnt remember what the password was
my gw account merged into my nc master account and i have no clues about the log in details of my master account
is there a way to change my gw password
or am i screwed?

If you know your playNC account name, log in and reset the password. Otherwise you need to contact NCsoft support, submit a ticket (you might as well include a digital photo or scan of your key code as they will ask for it) and wait. It may take about a week to get the password reset. I would not tell them you loaned out your account.
