W/Mo Farming @ Nebo Terrace/North Kryta Province
Rape of Faith
This is a guide to help you farm Ettin's at Nebo Terrace/North Kryta Province with a Warrior/Monk.
STATS
Healing Prayers: 8
Strength: 10 (9 + 1)
Axe Mastery: 12 (11 + 1)
Tactics: 10 (8 + 2)
EQUIPMENT
Well, you can really use anything you want, but you should contemplate getting an elemental hilt (because Ettin's have extremely good defense). But I chose to use...
Sundering Chaos Axe of Fortitude
Slashing Damage: 6-28 (req. 11 Axe Mastery)
Damage +14% (while enchanted)
Health +27
Armor Penetration +10% (Chance: 10%)
Damage +20%
Crimson Carapace Shield
Armor: 12 (req. 8 Tactics)
Health +45 (while enchanted)
Received damage -2 (while enchanted)
15k Gladiator's / 1.5k Ascalon Helm.
SKILLS
Disrupting Chop
Executioner's Strike
Penetrating Blow
Swift Chop
Cleave {E}
Healing Signet
Mending
Sprint
PROCEDURE
As you exit Beetletun, start running East and completely ignore the Mergoyle. They are just a waste of time, and plain annoying. You most likely won't be able to outrun them, that's what Sprint is for. Now, after you run past them you will come up to two sets of Caromi Wild/Tengu. I advise killing off both of these. They aren't strong and will go down quickly.
Once you get to the Ettin's, I strongly advise only taking on each group (2 or 3) one by one. 4+ Ettin's are a little tricky to survive against, especially without any good defensive stances and/or Dolyak Signet. So, stick to only 2 or 3 Ettin's at a time. Only focus your attacks on one of them, too.
Now, when you start fighting them, any attack order is fine. Just use something strong like Executioner's Strike, just to get them to use Healing Signet. And AS SOON as you see that Healing Signet, pop 'em with Disrupting Chop (I advise you to let every skill charge and then start attacking with them, so as to have Disrupting ready at the very moment of Healing Signet). After that, just go wild on them with your other four axe attacks.
Continue on, killing all the Ettin's in Nebo Terrace, and when you're done move onto North Kryta Province. When you get here, the Ettin's are outside the Ascalon Settlement, so start to head north and once you reach the new settlement, continue out the back entrance (East). You should encounter just two groups of Ettin's (2 or 3 of them per pack). Kill them off, and continue running East (past the Bog Skale) until you see a couple more groups of Ettin's. Kill them all off, and when you're done continue back through Ascalon Settlement towards Nebo Terrace (and re-kill the Ettin's there, then go back to North Kryta, etc..), or you can just warp to a town and identify all of your Pauldron's.

WHY
Ettin's are a very good monster to farm to find runes. They drop Ettin's Pauldron's, which very often spawn purple/blue (which means they have a rune). You may get a couple gold ones, but don't be overly eager to get them. I found two in one run, but then that was it. All purple.
Now, you may be wondering why in the world you'd want to farm runes? Simple: you have a small chance at striking it rich. You see those sexy Superior Vigor and Absorption runes running for 50k+? Just imagine finding one of those and selling them for a smooth profit, nice thought, huh?
Usually I only find Major runes, though. Major Absorption, Major Vigor, Major Curses, Major Tactics, etc... But the only real runes worth something and Superior Monk runes (anything), and Major/Superior Vigor and Absorption. Everything is scrap.

And here's my critique:
10 healing and Mending- WHY? +3 Mending only requires 8 Healing, and your build uses not one other Healing Prayers skill.
I tell people all the time, if you're going to use a maintaned enchantment, use Watchful Spirit, which gives +2 regen with NO invenstment in any attribute. Then you have ALL your attribute points to dump into Strength, Tactics, and weapon, which will kill your enemies faster and allow for you to heal more damage. You have the right idea, but you can refine your attribute point allocation by dumping one skill for a better one.
3/1 Vamp Axe haft would be better than Sundering any day. Sure, reduces your regen to +1, but you do a guaranteed 3 extra damage per hit when you attack, and you get the 3 health, of course. It adds up.

Like I said, this is just what I chose to use. When I flip around my skills I don't bother to check if my stat distribution is at optimum performance. Frankly I don't care as long as I have enough to use my axe's full damage and have +3 from mending.
And as for the "3/1 Vamp Axe Haft," perhaps I only have one axe at the moment? And that maybe the very reason I am farming in the first place is to buy myself more items? Hmm?

KV is giving you good advise. He is probably one of the better farming builders on these boards when it comes to W builds. It is only advise from a seasoned pro. You should care about your point distribution because it could be the difference between getting that uber drop and not getting it. Having your build tweaked just enough that you can farm longer and faster is a good thing. It is still your build ... just some flavor added. Linus Torvalds (SP) did not build linux by himself you know.

heres what ive been using for the ettins:
sword build (any sword will do but enchant and health bonuses help)
gash
sever artery
galrath slash
sprint
healing breeze
vig spirit
balths spirit
mending
healing: 10
strength: as high as possible
swords: 15/16
tactics: 9 (for shield)
rest in smite (if any)
gladiators armour (1.5k/15k) one with super swords, preferably a vigor and absorb, and either a helm +1 swords or ascalon helm
now cast balths spirit and mending, run to the mergoyles and let them hit you, this will recharge all your energy and do no damage. now you run forward and just before you reach the birds, cast vig spirit and run through them (they will remove vig spirit) or after reading the OP, maybe kill them. when you get to the ettins gather round however many you want, then cast vig spirit and healing breeze. first thing is to make them bleed, then deep wound and then galrath slash, you should get the ettins down to about 1/3rd health before they use heal signet, just carry on and cast hb and vig whenever you need it. when you only have 2-3 left you wont need hb or vig but if you want you can use them.
you can do this build with an axe as well, just replace with any skills you think would kill them fastest and make sure you have disrupting chop. also, a good idea is to hit the lynxs once so they attack you (doing no damage) but will give you adrenaline and energy (due to balths)
there!

Is it possible to get runes from the ettins outside of beacons pearch? well in the ice dome or cave
Murder In China
I prefer running past those "faked out" ettins and farm the ones near the Ascalon Settlement.
Katari
I use:
Air:10
Axe:16
Tactics:9
Cyclone Axe
Exe Strike
Evicerate
Distracting Blow
"Watch Yourself!"
Conjure Air
Healing Sig
Sprint
Shocking Chaos Axe of Sheltering
Crimson Carpace Shield
I've found Coniure Air to be a bigger bost to my damage than points in strength would be. For god's sake, Ettin's are level 15, they're not that powerfull. I've found healing sig and WY! more than enough defense and healing.
Ettin's also happen to be warriors, and I belive they take more damage from elemental sources.

2) if you knew that maybe you should of included that a 3:1 would be a better choice then 10/10 sundering...that's what a guide is for.

Seriously, do not tell me to chill unless I'm actually freaking out, cussing out everybody in my site. Because if I'm not doing that, I'm not mad. I was simply trying to make a point. Also, at the time and as my stats stood, they were perfectly find. I was merely missing +2 or +3 damage here and there, nothing that was "the difference between getting that uber drop and not getting it."

It depends on luck. Yesterday I found 3 golds in a row. http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/7405/a11ht.jpg ^check image And golds with good runes drop very often. I got these 4 runes the weekend before last. Rape of Faith

As for my guide, here are some keywords for all of you who want to flame it:
Well, you can really use anything you want
...
But I chose to use...
All I was TRYING TO DO was put an Ettin farming axe build out there, because I hadn't seen one here. Farming is all about experimentation, right? Well, that means EXPERIMENT. Don't follow every single guide you see, word for word. Find you own style to apply to it. I tried using a sword Ettin build and it sucked. I had all the elite Axe skills, though, so I switched my weapon and skills and set off. Experiment.

5 Gold Pauldron's, 3 runs. You know what I get? Superior Inspiration, Expertise, Beast Mastery, and junk like that. Never anything worthwhile.

Musta just been my day today...
Gildor Took
i average a gold every run on ettins but they are usually major runes or useless superior runes like mesmer. Happens a lot on the
nerfed" ettins
nerfed" ettins
BaseKid
Man you're all so lucky...I did like 6 runs, and then I just got plain bored. Why? Not a single gold rune. I like that use of Watchful spirit with a vampiric rune too (it works so well with cyclone axe).
lol, it is fun to kill ettins though.

Niare
I used to farm ettins a lot with a W/Mo build that I don't really remember, but not too long ago I switched to W/Me to farm for IDS. I went to my starting point for ettins and had forgot to switch back to Monk, but i was too lazy to bother so I just made a new build. It turned out that it works a lot faster than I remember my axe build working. It's a sword Tactics build that doesn't need to maintain anything or stop and heal. My average time for killing an ettin is 20 seconds, but sometims I can kill an entire group of three in 30 seconds with well enough timing. I just use a generic Furious Long Sword of Shelter, and the Stance Collector shield.
Attributes I use are,
2 Illusion
12 Strength
9 Sword(sup) just to meet my swords req.
16 Tactics (sup and Helm)
Skills I've been running:
Sever Artery
Desperation Blow
Riposte
Deadly Riposte
Victory is Mine {E}
Sprint
Physical Resistance
Dolyak Signet
I just hit the ripostes when they're ready and slash at what I'm slashing, and use Desperation when it's ready, I only take about 20's of damage against irresistable and 0 against regular attack. there's no stopping to heal since Victory is a shout. I'm really not sure if this is faster than the W/Mo axe builds, but I just figured I would throw it out there because I have't seen a W/Me farming ettins. I'm goin to switch back to monk though and test the builds.
Edit: I just switched to W/Mo and tried out an axe build and with well timing I can whack an ettin just after I disrupt the first healing sig. so it seems a little faster. plus I'm using Watchful Spirit and Mending with 8 healing so I never have to heal with a Vamp Axe. All my attacks are Adrenaline so energy isn't a bother.of course the 8 points in healing means I had to cut other so i might try just Watchfull, and use healing Sig, but I don't like stopping to heal.

I've been farming these ettins as of last night. After about 10 tries I got bored with not getting a single sup rune.
But I tried again today and just now (Farming the ones by the Ascalon settlement) I got a sup necro death rune (2.5k) and I also got one of the monk sup runes. =)

Best way to farm is the old way and just run straigth to ascalon settlement and work your way to scoundrels then back, as for skills you should be using differnet, bring healing hands and healing breeze and you can take on 5-10 if you can find that many, dismember/executioners/disrupting chop/healing sig/sprint are vital. Ettins paid for half of my warriors fow with there nice absorbs and vigors, hell i got superior vigors today and 10 10 sundering axe haft in 30 mins of farming so i had a good 30 mins

Gladiator's Defense {E} (75% Chance to block, Deals damage to blocked foes)
Dolyak Signet (Since both Bonetti's and Gald's Defense are blocking skills, and the Ettin's Irrestiable Blow causes knockdown if blocked)
Mending (Constant +3 Regen)
Healing Breeze (+6 Regen for 10 Seconds)
Weapon
-----------------
Cruel Chaos Axe of Fortitude 6-28 (Req 9)
Damage +12% >50% Hp
Lengthens Deep Wound
Health +25
Shield
-----------------
Eternal Shield (Req 9 Strength)
Recieved Damage -2 (While Enchanted)
Health +34 (While Hexed)
Not the greatest setup but still works for Ettin farming. I managed to pick up a pair of Superior Monk runes (Smiting and Healing) in one run and a Major vigor during the same day.

Wonderful build for the first time farmer. I tried this out and it worked first time. It is a bit slow for me because I am not using a max sword or sup swordmanship rune. And if you're worried about the cost of runes, the most I spent was 4.9k on major vigor from rune vendor (I'm lazy). Then I used minor tactics on the ascalon helm and got a Major Swordsmanship to brind swordsmanship up to 14.
This build is so easy to use, just set it up and go!
2 runs and 4 major runes, so not special yet...but I'm patient

Looks about like my thread, some people say that the ascalon settlement drop more, thats totall bs. I farm back and forth, one after another, and I get runes either way, Actually I have found all my vigors and absorbtions in the zone nearest beetletun. And dealing with bog scales isn't as good as a clean slate full of ettins.

gladiators armour (1.5k/15k) one with super swords, preferably a vigor and absorb, and either a helm +1 swords or ascalon helm
now cast balths spirit and mending, run to the mergoyles and let them hit you, this will recharge all your energy and do no damage. now you run forward and just before you reach the birds, cast vig spirit and run through them (they will remove vig spirit) or after reading the OP, maybe kill them. when you get to the ettins gather round however many you want, then cast vig spirit and healing breeze. first thing is to make them bleed, then deep wound and then galrath slash, you should get the ettins down to about 1/3rd health before they use heal signet, just carry on and cast hb and vig whenever you need it. when you only have 2-3 left you wont need hb or vig but if you want you can use them.
you can do this build with an axe as well, just replace with any skills you think would kill them fastest and make sure you have disrupting chop. also, a good idea is to hit the lynxs once so they attack you (doing no damage) but will give you adrenaline and energy (due to balths)
there! drop breeze for victory is mine
drop vigerous spirit for final thrust
>_< and take healing down to 8 and put remaining on tacitcs and u got a much better better build

=P In honesty ettins are easy to kill no matter what build you use unless you want a few more seconds of haste in killing them.
I now use:
disrupt chop
Dismember/ Penetrating Blow
Executioner's Stike
Cyclone Axe
Sprint
Balthazar's spirit
Healing Hands
Heal Breeze, Heal Sig (anything that you can spam heal..)
Heal 9
Smite (left overs) 3
Strength 9+2 = 12
Axe 12+3 = 15
It's not maxed out at attributes simply because I can't noticed a huge difference on 2dmg if axe was 16.
I wield:
F1= Razorstone, Tanzit Defender
F2= Razorstone, Thorgall's Shield (I mainly use this sense I have bal's spirit on me all the time.)
I also have victo's battle axe but it's not as useful with the sundering as getting the extra adren from the razorstone to disrupt the ettins healsig.
It's not the best but after selling greens and monk sup runes and what not I have enough cash than I ever had. 222k in storage. Not a lot for some people but It's all I need. =P
