HM Farmer LF Leechers - is this real?
kupp
I believe everyone knows what I'm talking about, raptor farming. I'm wondering, does this actually work, having more people in your party outside compass range will actually increase the runner's drops? Or is it one of those myths that everybody takes as the truth?
MisterB
Yes. It's like the wintersday dwarf phenomenon all over again, every day in Rata Sum. Some people misunderstood what the loot scaling does and read what they wanted to believe in the dev update. These people then influenced more people to ask for leechers, and now it is the norm.

Well it's also for rep point farming right?

That is true. Leechers are rewarded rep points for doing nothing except wasting the farmer's time and lowering the amount of drops the farmer could have gotten by forgoing time spent forming parties and waiting to zone. The funny part about this arrangement is the farmer lowers his drops voluntarily whilst believing they are being clever and increasing their drops. Leechers get free rep.
It's a parasitic relationship where the host volunteers. Nothing wrong with doing it for friends and guildies, but the farmers who invite strangers are perplexing.

Either the farmer does not understand loot drops or wants to be nice AND have someone to door them back to rata sum/riven.

Alright, thanks for the answers. I always thought it DID NOT increase the drops as well dispite the ocasional guy asking for leechers, but since this week's event kicked in I've seen so many people in Rata Sum asking for the same thing I started to wonder if it was me who was wrong and not them. Cleared that up.

Im stayin on the fence on this.
Its 1 subject we shall never know which arguement is correct as good `ol anet wont state.
Im sure ppl have asked 1000`s times any of the anet staff who visit guru and i`ll guess they never got an answer to say which.
Its also something i feel cant be tested - how do you test randomness ?
so what if mr x did 100 runs and got xxxx and mr y did 100 runs with leachers an got + or - mr x`s drops - its random and i bet if you compared with 100`s doing same all results would be different. 1 person may be havin lucky day and someone else the badest luck going - who knows.

Well i thought that ectos and rares ( Golds ) arent affected by loot scaling so , if you go with another 7 players you will share drop chance. If those players arent on radar you wont so ..... farmer gets no benefit and leechers still get points .

It's all in their heads about the drops, but it kinda saves the farmer some time by having leechers zone for them. Unless they are slow loaders, which usually get left behind anyway.

I took advantage of the 'HM farmer LF leechers' to finish getting my maxed Asuan title. I actually had a bit of fun doing it when there were a bunch of other leechers. Using running builds we often had little competitions to see who could get to the most Shrines before the farmer finished his run. I learned quite a bit about optimising my ranger running build while doing this.

Indeed. In addition to the scaling of drops having been fixed years ago so that leeching does not increase drops for the farmer, my own testing reveals no benefit. Well, other than people like you for getting them some free points.

I never take leechers. But I have noticed one thing. If I have been away from Riven Earth zone with all characters for a while, then go raptor farm, the drops seem pretty good for a few runs, then go back to the usual. I call this the "welcome back" effect.
Now, what if adding a fresh leecher to a group caused the "welcome back" drop effect to reset? Is this what causes those who carry leechers along to believe in higher drops with leechers? Or is it my imagination playing tricks on me?

Probably somwhere in between the loot system codes ArenaNet is not telliing and hiding from us.

Actually that's what the whole field of probability & statistics is for . All you need is a specific outcome to measure (number of drops, number of golds, number of festival items, etc.).
I have already conducted tests that proved (with >99% confidence) that teammates outside the radar improve drop rates of Feathered Avicara Scalps in Mineral Springs. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a leecher effect too... maybe if ANet reinstates the Grog event I'll go test Grog drops on raptors.
