weapons in towns
The Scorpion Knight
Would be cool if you could see the weapons on your back or something.

It's bad enough they gave you zrank to flash your pathetic e-peen that no one cares about.

It would cause lag though.
In conjunction with Foxbat's above explanation, the connection currently supplies the client data such as a player's co-ordinates, armour being worn, it's colour, the player's looks, emote(s), the title being worn and if a minipet is out. Add in the weapon set being held (this could constantly change) as well as the dye colour. Pop that into a heavily populated area and you will get more lag - client and/or connection. |
Which is exactly, to the word, what I said.
Also I suggested to counter lag:
-people can only have 1 possible set they can show in outposts, which would solve the switching problem.
-they can reduce the maximum number of people per district to deal with the lag. Every district and instance is a different server by itself, that's how the gw engine works. The maximum number of people used to be lower when GW started out, so it's not like anyone would notice a difference.
And as for the lag on the client side, I also adressed that:
You can turn it off so you don't see it.
I literally repeated myself on every point.

The ability to hold/show weapons in outposts is a needed immersion element that Anet chose to leave out of GW1 for technical reasons.
It is a detriment to the game nonetheless. Along similar lines to the lack of jumping ability. GW1 is limited in several ways, it's just the game we've come to love.
"E-peen" or not, and considering the weak "lag" argument, it's still sad that you can't show people your sword and shield in town. Your weapons are a cherished part of your character.
Defending the exclusion of weapons from towns is like defending the installation of an 8-track player in a new Lexus. You can make the argument, but you're defending a low quality choice, and defending crappy choices is lame. Better to own up to the fact that it's crappy and resolve to improve next time.
Which leads us to GW2. I'm assuming we'll be seeing weapons in towns.

The choice between lag and showing weapons may seem lame now, but bear in mind the average specifications for this game were probably drawn up a few years before release. We're looking at anywhere between 5 and 7 years ago now. Think back to what your pc at that time could handle. I'm guessing its nothing compared to what your current model can. That was the choice the developers had. In my opinion, they made the right one. Hell I have a pretty good desktop now and even it struggles when I run from one end of Kamadan AD1 to the end with storage, loading up everyone's textures as they come into viewing range.
GW2 won't have instanced towns, so yes you will.

In fact another argument I've heard is also false.
The notion that all the grinders and farmers have the same high-end equipment anyway (and people don't want to have it rubbed in their face that others have more ecto's).
I think the very fact that everyone can show weapons will actually create more diversity in desired weapons. If everyone can show off their end-game weapons and it turns out that these are mostly the same as everyone else, this will create a whole new demand for other weapons.
If anything I think the huge gap between the obsidian edges, crystalline swords etc and the other gear will become smaller, and the high end gear will be broader, if everyone could see what weapons others have.
The way it is now, the only people that see your weapons are those you group with and in pvp those you fight against. This does not encourage people to have unique weapons because the audience is small and it makes more sense to go for the most expensive ones.

Personally I think the lag arguement is bulloney. In my opinion, the data that constantly changes is player coordinates and that movement causes almost all the lag. Which is why they limited the number of mini pets to 25 (and probably dropped by 25 the number of players that could be in a district.) Adding a few more pixels to a stationary character for their weapon and the weapon's color is a one time data transfer that is small and would not cause lag. Drop a few more players from town like they probably did for mini pets and that could make up for it anyways. Think about all the movement they have added to town just in the last 12+ months: moving everlasting tonics, party point animations, crates of fireworks, crystal balls, new emotes. And yet somehow adding a few extra pixels for weapons is going to be the lag that kills town? No flipping way. Lag is caused by movement and sheer number of players in town. We do not have weapons solely because someone was not smart enough to think to add them, or they made the decision that it might be too scary for all you gangstas to have weapons in town. Who knows. And if the servers are so bad they can not handle the few extra pixels for weapons then they have wasted the millions they made off of GW1 and that does not bode well for GW2. That's my opinion.

Just say no to e-peen

4 years into the game, this wont be implemented, because, really, no weapon is rare these days, so whats the point?

The trade window is perfect for showing off weapons. If you want to see anothers weapon, then invite to trade.

i didn't say they should implement it...i just asked if there was any specific reason why and about 8 of these 40 posts answered the question...ty
