Stuck on 'Connecting to ArenaNet' with Netgear Router...

Hi all!

New to GW and these forums, but so far having bad luck =[ I can't even install the game! (Though I have managed to try it on other computers with luck, but not mine! =[ )

I am having absolutely no luck on this computer. I have managed to get it working fine on my grandparents' computer, and also a computer at work.

Whenever I try to install, the small grey box that pops up says 'Connecting to ArenaNet', and the bar slowly moves to the right and then stays there with absolutely no change at all. On all other computers I've tried, this screen disappears almost instantly.

I have followed the official FAQ for Netgear routers. I currently have nothing in my Port Triggering list so I assume that means the required ports are open. Also, I have disabled the SPI firewall.

There are no firewalls running and no security at all, but this issue persists. I have tried everything I can think of and have looked around online but found no working solution.

Please help as I'd like to actually play the game!

Thanks! (And hello!)

To determine if the router is indeed the problem, try to connect directly from the modem (provided by your ISP, whomever they may be) to your computer. If it works then you know 100% that the Netgear Router is your problem and not something else.

I HAD the same problem, do a system restore a day or 2 days ago. That will fix it 100%.

It could be the port settings on your wireless, if you have a cable connected to the Pc then that is unlikely. If you're using Norton or another third party firewall security tool, double check to make sure the tool didn't start blocking because GW has patched itself enough for it to consider suspect. Apparently taking gw.exe off the exceptions list, then re-enabling it, works for some people.

You can also try running GW with the -diag option (go to the gw icon and in properties add -diag after the exe make sure to add a space after exe). This should produce a diagnostics dump from the client. Look it over and see if it's having trouble connecting to a specific IP or port.

Try the Winsock fix also, At the Start menu go to "Run"
in the window you get type CMD and press enter
A MSdos window will appear, in that window type the following:

Quote:
netsh winsock reset
Press enter,... After the reset is complete close the window

I know you say no firewalls are running, but does that include Window's Firewall?

btw, unless the Netgear router is seriously different than other routers, you should not need to worry about any opening ports or port forwarding. In fact, setting up that sort of thing incorrectly could cause problems.

Thanks so much for all the help guys! Tried everything suggested, double checked everything, but I managed to find the culprit. Peer Guardian was running in the background, or should I say 'hiding' and was disabling filters. I enabled filters and I can connect! Joy!!!

Thanks again, also having some questions about which game to buy now that my trial is ending soon. I opened a thread here:

Buy the Trilogy, can be found online for $30 or less - not sure about UK prices though.
