are holy/chaos/dark/shadow weapons armor-ignoring?
jray14
I know that skills inflicting these damage types are armor-ignoring, but what about weapons with these inherent damage types?
snaek
according to my understanding, they are not. they simply bypass any armor bonuses granted to physical or elemental damage. however, most skills that say they do holy/shadow damage are armour ignoring. (btw there are no skills cause chaos or dark damage, and no weapons that cause shadow damage afaik)

The weapons are not armor-ignoring. And I think you're mistaken about the skills. Some skills that cause those types of damage also ignore armor, but I don't think they all do.
Holy, chaos, dark and shadow are just other types of damage - not physical or elemental.
From http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Holy_damage "Most skills that directly deal holy damage are also armor ignoring." Most isn't all.
From http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Dark_damage "Unlike Shadow damage, dark damage is not armor-ignoring, but simply non-physical, non-elemental damage which uses the normal damage calculations. "
I think chaos damage is caused only by weapons, not skills, and is not armor-ignoring. I think shadow damage is caused only by skills and is the one that's always armor-ignoring.
Hope it helps rather than adding to the confusion. :S

EDIT - It should be easy enough to check. Roll a PvP-only character. Use the PvP equipment tab to make various weapons dealing those types. Then go wand the different armor dummies a while and see if the average damage changes on the higher-armored targets.

Shadow damage is basically dark damage for skills (much like how holy weapons used to be called "light" weapons).
The rule is that if the holy/dark/chaos damage is dealt by a skill, it ignores armor. If it's dealt by a weapon, it does not ignore armor (this includes weapons who have had their damage type changed through skills like Judge's Insight).

Thanks for the helpful replies! I knew some of the answers might be on wiki, but I couldn't find them, and I don't have a free character slot to test things.
Shadowed Ritualist
chaos damage can be caused by skills, seeping wound for instance.

maelstrom has chaos i think too.

They are simply damage for types for +/- damage while fighting certain foes (Holy vs Undead etc).

Originally, Holy and Shadow damage always ignored armor could only be found on skills, while Light and Dark damage respected armor and could be found on weapons. (Judge's Insight was an exception.)
Eventually a-net decided to just merge the four damage types into two. What we have now is Holy/Shadow damage on weapons always respects armor, and Holy/Shadow damage on skills *usually* ignores armor. (And the number of exception skills has grown.)
That said, since nothing has +armor against Holy/Shadow, even their armor-respecting forms have a slight edge over physical and elemental damage types.

These damage types are just like on big game of pokemon! ^^

But things do have less armour vs certain types of damage (e.g Destroyers vs Water), so in those cases they do not have the edge. If there is another factor that means they do, I would like to know.
