Help with Ranger Hero build

I've looked around the board and didn't see much in the way of what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd ask you folks for help. I just got Pyre in my team and I'm really excited to use him, but I'm terrible with Ranger builds and not sure what to do. I'm using a Warrior btw and play with a friend who uses an Elementalist.

I decided to try an interrupt build and I'd appreciate some suggestions. Here's what I came up with on my own:

Poison Tip Signet, Practiced Stance, Choking Gas, Distracting Shot, Savage Shot, Lightning Reflexes, Troll Unguent, Favorable Winds

Also, what type of bow (bowstring, inscription, etc) am I supposed to be using for him? I'm not really sure about what runes are best, either. I appreciate any help.

Well for starters, I would keep Distracting Shot, Savage Shot, Lightning Reflexes, Favorable Winds and maybe Poison Signet. Everything else should go.

Troll Unguent is a waste because monks should heal.

Choking gas is expensive and not really useful overall.

Practiced Stance - There are much better elites like Broad Head Arrow, for example.

It's not a bad build. I would take out Troll Unguent for another block stance. Whirling Defense might be good. Also, unless you're using more than 1 ranger, it's not really worth it to bring Favorable Winds and your hero will proberly be done casting it by the the time you've killed a group so.
Sloth Hunter's Shot would be a good choice, since your interrupt from Choking Gas triggers first it will always give the +dmg.

The Practised Stance + Choking gas combo is decent and poison for a bit of degen can be good.

Equipement-wise I would give him a Poisonous Recurve Bow of Fortitude, with 15^50 mods. You could also go for Sundering mod, it helps in Hard Mode vs the high armored foes.

For runes I would go 11+1+1(headpiece) Expertise, 10+1 Marks and 10+1 Wilderness Survival.

I find that Read The Wind, Broad-Head Arrow, Savage Shot, Distracting Shot makes for the best interrupt ranger setup. The other four skills are optional. My setup is usually Lightning Reflexes, a res signet, natural stride, and mending touch, although the last two can easily be swapped out for whatever other skills might be needed in the area, or for poison tip signet.

As for equipment, since RTW will always be maintained, Pyre should have a silencing flatbow of fortitude, 15^50.

Poison Tip Signet is meh, I would rather my hero used an attack skill on the target instead of stopping to use Poison Tip Signet. Poison is alright with apply poison and it last for all attack and can be spread around easily, but Poison Tip is pretty limited and only really comes in usefull in areas with foes that can take a while to kill.

Keep both Savage and D-shot on the bar, heroes are godly with interupts.

Try grabbing BHA, in most cases its better anti-caster than Chocking Gas, especially if you have some physicals or MMs in your group. Grab Read The Wind to avoid the chance of it missing with its usually long flight time.

Keep Lightning Reflexes, spending 1/3 of the time blocking takes a bit of pressure off your prots and healers, it also provides an IAS for increased damage output.

Drop Troll Unguent, if you need the healing your party doesnt heave enough support/you have too few healers/your healers suck. It also means investing into Wilderness Survival when attributes could go elsewhere. You could pick up another block stance like Whirling Defence to cover for the reduced healing if you feel he takes too much pressure.

Without a huge amount of energy spare to assist with damage something like Sloth Hunters would be good.

Exp headpiece
Min exp
Min marks
Best vigor rune you can afford
Survivor Insignias
Vitae Runes

Thats the standard ranger setup I use with most of my bow builds. If I use far more 5 energy skills that 10 energy skills I use a marks headpiece so I still meet the Exp breakpoint for 5E skills, but have an increased damage output.

With Read The Wind a nice bow to use for more damage is a Hornbow, if you find he missed with attacks to often switch to a recurve.
Generally bows should be Vamp 15^50 +30HP/+5AL/+7ALvsX
If you are running a key condition such as daze from BHA you should have the bow mod for that condition.

Shortbow and magebane+distracting+savage are your best options for a hero imo.

On a Ranger hero I use Infuriating Heat. Best skill on Ranger imo, as it allows you to keep DSlash up all day and replace FGJ! with something much more useful. Also great for any other Warrior build, mind. Combine it with Dark Fury you've got a spammable Cleave, too.

I don't expect the Ranger to be deal huge damage tbh, so some interrupts here and there are nice. Sloth Hunter's shot is too good to be missed, just use any preparation you like the look of.

Wow, thanks a lot for all the advice. You guys are life savers, I really appreciate it. Anyway, I was thinking of trying this build out for the time being:

Savage Shot, Distracting Shot, Magebane Shot, Sloth Hunters Shot, Pin Down, Rapid Fire, Lightning Reflexes, Throw Dirt

I may replace Whirling with a Res Signet if it seems Pyre is always the last man standing, but I honestly think we have enough sources of res not to have to worry about it. Judging by the skill descriptions of each, I thought Magebane might prove a little more useful than Broad Head Arrow due to it's lower cost and shorter recharge. To be quite honest I wasn't sure if heroes could make good use of either skill (along with Sloth Hunters..), so I was always wary about putting them on the bar. However, if the general consensus is that BHA beats out Magebane I'll go grab that instead.

I'm thinking about getting a decent recurve bow and dropping RTW for something like Throw Dirt but I'm not sure, and I'd try out Infuriating heat, but being in a party with mostly casters makes it seem a tad less efficient.

Edit: Decided to drop RTW and Whirling for Rapid Fire and Throw Dirt. Lemme know if this is a bad idea.

this has always served me well and the AI seems to manage it reasonably well:

12 + 1 Exp
12 +1 +1 Mark

Distracting Shot
Savage Shot
Concussion Shot
Prepared Shot
Experts Focus
Lightning Reflexes
Epidemic *
Rez Sig

* this is subject to the rest of the build being run

i don't use dshot cause the heroes like to interrupt normal attacks with it which is a waste. Concussion shot is the best in their hands + marksman's wager and a load of quick attacks with an ias from beast mastery

I use an R/P with either GFTE or anthem of Envy which it spams on recharge (being the only adren skill on the bar) and only 2/3 interrupts. If you take choking gas you don't need much in the way of interrupting... Another build I run is R/ with a pet, mauling wossname, where it KD's the foe; also useful.
