New monitor and problems :(

I recently bought a computer, with your guys help My computer hasn't come yet, on account of the 5850 being out of stock, but my monitor, which I ordered separately has come first.

Ok so the problems started when I was watching some videos in full screen, the screen starting suddenly turned black for about half an second then went back. This happened about every minute or two. Some videos have it worse, flashing about every 20 seconds or so, while some don't flash at all. I have searched on line but couldn't find the answer to this.

Then, just 5 mins ago I was playing starcraft when I alted tabbed, the screen turned black and stayed black. It wasn't a black where its a black picture, but where it makes no difference if the power is on or not. So at first I thought my cables weren't plugged in properly so I unplugged them and plugged them back in, it didn't do much, except that suddenly my screen(which was still black) started flashing white -.- Once in a while I would be able to make out the webpages I was viewing on my screen, but with really messed up graphics

O yea, I almost forgot my monitor right now is attached to a around 5 years old computer, running windows xp with a pentium 4 cpu and a radeon 9200 series card.

I have no idea what to do, shold I get a refund or something? or jsut download some drivers? Help would really be appreciated

Sounds like a bad cable, or maybe the port on either the video card or the monitor. I assume you are using the VGA connector and not DVI?

For the new computer you will definitely want to use the DVI connector.

Try it with a different computer and/or cable if possible, or wait for the new system and see how it works with that, assuming you can check it before the return period runs out.

Are you sure it's not going into screensaver or standby mode?

I'm using the white cable, which I'm pretty sure is the DVI one. And yeah, I'm positive its not screen saver or standby.

it's very possible that the graphic card is not capable of outputting that resolution (2048x1152). many older graphic cards are not capable of going beyond 1600x1200 on their DVI outputs.

try lowering the resolution and see if the problem goes away.

I'm pretty sure that a radeon 9200 cannot support that resolution - like Moriz said, lower it.... something like 1280x1024 would be a good test point...

damn.... it still flashes at 1280*700 resolution, but now its around once 5-10 mins tho, a big improvement, even my old monitor was running at 1400*1000. its much better but why is it still flashing..

did you try with the VGA cable (the blue one)? i know the radeon 9250 can put out 2560x1600 on VGA.

You probably have a problem with your video card.... if you haven't changed the drivers etc... it could also be a power supply issue when under load, but in any case I think you have a hardware issue with your old pc.

Can you check out the monitor with a different PC? It might be that causing the flashes, but I don't think it's very likely

I think I have this same problem....Mine goes all greyish, with a lighter bar across the top. If i drag windows around behind it, i can barely see them moving along the very edges of the screen. I have 2 identical monitors, and have switched DVI ports...no change. I dont think this is a physical problem on the card, unfortunately. Restarting makes it go away. Screenshots reveal my entire desktop, no messed up screen.

Sounds the same, anyway. And my card is more then capable of powering 2 of these monitors.

Edit: Just thought it could be the DVI cable I use....i will swap them and see if it happens on the same monitor. Unfortunately, its a once every couple days occurance for me, so hard to see immediate results.

EDIT: yea and ill try the vga cable, but why would a old cable work better than a new one?

like i said, older graphic cards typically cannot put out very high resolutions on their DVI outputs. they shouldn't have any trouble doing so with VGA outputs.

I lied......not the cable. Definitely the card.

yup everything is fixed, changing the cable to vga did the trick =P

did you get your 5850 yet? if not, i think it's time for you to camp the newegg/whatever etailer site
