Upgrading My Health Bar

Last weekend I found a couple little green items that elevated my health bar from 391 to 450. They look like green flags with a little creature on them when you open you inventory. I used them to upgrade my armor and suddenly my health bar plummeted back down to the mid 200 range! Where can I find those little suckers again? Also open to any other easy ways to raise my health bar. I'm a level 17 Necromancer and worked too hard to get downgraded and beat down so easy in advanced areas now!

any 2 green items with +30 on them will rasie your helth by 60, but if your L17 and have 200 health, i;d say take the sup runes off your armor.

Going to assume the green flags are runes...otherwise I'm not sure what you mean.

As said, if you have a lot of superior runes, take most off. *Beware though, unless you use a Perfect Salvage kit, you risk breaking/losing your armor piece.* If you don't want to do that/don't have a Perfect Salvage kit, you could just buy different runes to add to your armor to boost your health/energy/whatever and replace the ones on it.

But weapons can give you extra health too (ex-sword/spear with +30hp, staff with +30hp, shield/focus with +30hp).

Hello

First of all, what is your characters primary?

Generally speaking, the best compromise between attributes/damage and health is to use Minor Runes on your armor. Getting a headpiece of any given attribute and then putting a Minor Rune of the same attribute as your headpiece will give you +2 to that attribute, which is likely to be your main attribute of choice. Generally speaking, having an attribute of 12 and then equiping a headpiece with minor rune of the same attribute will give you 14. Now there is much data on attack skills and spells that show you that difference between 14 and 16 is negligible. For a slight differnece in skill, you lose -75 health from the difference between a Minor and a Superior Rune. The only exception to this is when your skill is an Enchantment and you MUST extend its duration at the cost of health.

It is also worth noting that putting two of the same type of rune, be it any combination of strength of the same rune will not add to one another. The highest strength rune will trump the lower one.

Now, other than Major and Superior Runes that affect your health (Negatively), there are some that affect your health Positively. These are called Vigor Runes. Minor, Major and Superior Runes of Vigor ALL increase your health. Here being one of the exceptiosn that a Major or Superior rune will not lower your health. Start small with a Minor Rune of Vigor, then to a Major and in time, if you wish, a Superior (the Major being the optimal for your gold).

Next comes Insignias: Inscriptions, just like runes can also affect your health. If you use Spells, you might want to chose inscriptions that increase the amount of maximum energy you can hold (Radiant Insignias). If you are a Melee class (Assassin, Warrior, Dervish, Paragon), you might go for higher health (Survivor Insignias). Or you might go with a mix of both.

Lastly come your weapons. If you use a wand and a focus, a staff, or a melee weapon and a shield, you can add health to the item you hold on the left and to the one you hold on the right (in MOST cases) for a total of up to +60 Health total (in normal conditions).

If all of this sounds confusing, think of each of your pieces of armor as a block of Lego. you can add another block to Front (an Insignia) and you can add another block to the back (Runes). Each piece of armor can have 1 Insignia and 1 Rune.

I hope I didnt scare you

I don't get what those green things could have been... Couldn't it be that you traveled to eotn, thus geting the Journey to the North buff, added some superior/major runes to your armor (they don't work under the JttN buff), left eotn, losing the buff and health due to the runes? Still the numbers don't add... 391 to 450 is 59 health and I can't figure out how you can get 59 health, without using some imperfect mods on weapons...
EDIT: the only way I can see would be having major vigor, minor vigor and 2 major runes on the armor (391 health), overwrite the major vigor and the 2 major runes with minor runes (450 health) and addind 2 sup runes overwriting the minor vigor (270 health). However this doesn't really suit the story... (amusing myself with trying to figure out what happened :P)

to start with tell us what you arm or is ie:
radiant monument scar pattern of superior soul
tormentor's monument tunic of superior vigor
tormentor's monument gloves of minor death
tormentor's monument leggins of major soul
tormentor's monument boots of attunement

The first word is the insignia I have on the armor, my headpiece has the older style of a +1 energy radiant insignia. My chest has a tormentor's insignia of +10 armor with +6 weakness to holy damage.

The second and third words are the actual armor, in this case the armor I got from rank 5 in ebon vanguard of eye of the north.

The 5th and 6th words are the rune I put on the armors, the head peace has a superior soul reaping wich when combined with the +1 soul reaping in the headpice it will raise my soul by 4 points, 1 for the armor and 3 for the rune. There is a cost superior rune also take away 75 health. Major runes ad 2 points to the skills and remove 35 health, minor runes add 1 point to skill and don't remove any health. The same skill rune don not add to seach other but the health damage does.

The tunic has a superior health rune on it the adds 50 points of heath, a major vigor rune adds 41 points of health and a minor vigor adds 30 points, againd the benifits of vigor rune do not stack. If you do not plan to add skill runes to all peices of armor you can add a vitae rune the will stack and add 10 points of health.

There are other runes that do not add skill benifits, such as the attunement on my boots, this rune add 2 points of energy.

If my necro were to wear this armor as is she would have 420 health and 33 energy but her soul reaping would still only have +4: 1 from the headpiece +3 from the sup rune, the +2 from the major rune will not be added but the -35 health will. I would then add the wand and focus item, the wand has a +5 energy when health is above 50% and the wand has +12 energy and +30 health for a total of 450 health and 50 energy.

Based on the totals you origionally had you probably had a major vigor rune somewhere on your armor that you removed or more likely overwrote by adding another rune on that armor. I usually stick to all minor runes before I reach lvl 20, now as a back line necro you migh t want to add 1 najor rune to a headpiece of your primary attack skill line. When you reach lvl 20 you may think about adding a superior rune to you primary atttack line , when you do that your health will be 495. I'm not sure what armor upgrade you are talking about, there are no necro insignias that add health and necro runes look more like an arrows pointing upper right.

And just as an FYI I never whear the sup soul scar pattern.

Could you have gotten your hands on consumables? Then they might be your small green flags.

General tips to stay alive:

*Have the best armor available for you, max necro armor is at 60AL.
*Have some sort of defensive skill or self heal on your bar.
*Have a decent team set up (usually bring 2 monks for an 8man team etc)
*Have decent builds for yourself and your heroes.
*Know how to pull mobs.
*Know how to kite properly.
*Have proper equippment. For example use survivor insignias and don't use sup runes unless you know why and what you are doing.

I've probably forgotten something, but that should help you stay alive longer.

Some confusion here, methinks.

You're a level 17 Necromancer, so your base health (before any bonuses) is 420. Any major (purple) rune you have added to your armor will deduct 35 from this total; any superior (gold/yellow) rune will deduct 75. These health deductions are to offset the beneficial effects of the runes, i.e. +2 or +3 respectively to the tied attribute.

On the plus side, there are various runes and insignia that raise health: Runes of Minor/Major/Superior Vigor, which raise health by 30/41/50 points respectively; Runes of Vitae, which raise your health by 10 points per rune applied; Survivors' Insignia - these provide extra health that varies depending on where you place them, Health +15 (on chest armor) Health +10 (on leg armor) and Health +5 (on other armor.)

Complicated bit: there is no benefit to be gained in using multiple vigor runes - only the highest one you have equipped "counts"; if you already have a Rune of Major Vigor applied to your chest, you'll gain nothing from applying a Rune of Minor Vigor to your feet.

On the other hand, the penalty effects of Major and Superior runes are additive - the -35/-75 health from these runes applied per rune used, so you can have a potential maximum of -375 health if you apply 5 Superiors.

Very complicated, but it will soon be second nature. I would advise you not to use Major or Superior runes at all, for the time being - apart from some very specific circumstances, minor runes are all you'll need in PvE.

edit - ok, I'm at work and it took me almost an hour to type all that inbetween doing official stuff. I'm not going to delete it now and replace it with "what he said"

Guys.... You're talking fine details to someone who's clearly just discovered that runes exist. You need to keep it simple. Snog's the only one who comes close to doing that.

I tend to be wordy as hell, but let me give it a crack:

1. Your armor pieces each have 2 spaces for an upgrade. They can each get a RUNE and an INSIGNIA.

2. You can tell what's in your armor already by reading the name. The naming convention is "X <Armor Name> of Y," where X is the insignia and Y is the rune. For example, a "Blessed Fanatic's Tunic of Minor Curses" has a Blessed insignia and a Minor Curses rune in it.

3. You can get insignias and runes from (1) salvaging monster armors that you find, (2) buying them from the rune trader NPC in major towns, and (3) buying them from other players.

4. If you don't like the insignias and runes that you put in your armor, you can get rid of them by (1) putting another insignia or rune over them, or (2) salvaging them out. Think twice before salvaging them out, since anything less than a Perfect Salvage Kit is likely to destroy the armor in the process.

5. Insignias usually grant a health bonus or an armor bonus subject to a condition. There's a few other bonuses too. See: list of insignias.

6. Runes usually grant increased attribute points at the expense of decreased health points. There's also a few other bonuses. See list of runes. A couple of important notes: (1) Most runes do NOT stack; you only get the bonus from the largest rune. (Vitae and Attunement runes are an exception and do stack.) (2) Aside from the +1 on your headpiece, runes are the only way to permanently increase an attribute above 12.

7. So, what's the best combination of insignias and runes?
  • Insignias are pretty easy. Use the best armor bonus insignia that you think you're going to be able to almost always meet the condition. (For example, you might use Blessed insignias if most/all of your builds include an enchantment that you always keep up on yourself.) If none of the armor bonus insignias work with your build, use a health bonus insignia (Survivor's insignia).
    • Additionally, necromancers who use corpse-exploitation spells should use one Bloodstained insignia and warriors should use one Stonefist insignia.
    • Sometimes you see people on these forums suggesting using health bonus (Survivor's) insignias instead of armor bonus insignias. These people are either talking about Player-versus-Player (where that can be a good idea) or they are idiots. Either way, you can ignore them.
  • Runes are a bit more complicated. This should serve as a good general model:
    • Start by crafting yourself several different headpieces -- one for each attribute that you sometimes use as the center of your build. (For a necromancer, this means a Curse hat, a Death hat, maybe a Blood hat, and probably not a Soul Reaping hat.) Put a rune of the corresponding attribute into each headpiece. Now you can change headpieces when you change your build so that you always have the most appropriate attribute bonus.
      • What degree of rune to use in your headpieces is an issue of major contention on the forums. Some people insist that the lost health points are never worth the gained attribute points, so only Minor runes should be used. Other people insist that that the gained attribute points are so valuable that you should always use a Superior rune, despite the health cost. My personal opinion is that the trade off is worthwhile for some attribute lines and not worthwhile for others. I find that Death (in particular), Curses, and Blood all benefit enough from the added attribute points to be worth putting the Superior rune in their respective headpieces.
    • Put Minor runes for attributes that give a passive effect (like Soul Reaping or Expertise) or that you often use skills from even when it's not the center of your build on your non-headpiece armor parts.
    • Put the biggest Vigor rune you can afford on one non-headpiece armor part.
    • If you're a warrior, put the biggest Absorption rune you can afford on one non-headpiece armor part.
    • Fill in any remaining open spaces with Vitae runes.

i'm guessing the green items with flags on them are the necromancer runes

these don't increase your health

That's what I thought when I began typing. It starts out as a simple, explanatory sentence and ends up as War & Peace.

Can't post links at the moment (old story), but basically wiki/Health wiki/Runes and wiki/Insignia covers it ^_^
