I stopped playing GW roughly 3 years ago. I dont remember a thing about the game but i appearantly had several pve lvl 20s. I have decided to just start a new character and relearn it all. I have done quite a bit of reading today on the forums but i still have several questions :

1. I currently only own prophecies and factions - If i create a character in prophecies and hit 20 in that campaign can i carry it on into factions and the subsequent expansions?

2. I'm making a Ranger, for pve, what is the BEST secondary. Im sure there is debate to it, but surly there is a best cookie cutter secondary.

3. Is there any How-Tos for rangers out there i could reference. The ranger forums on this site weren't too helpful and there was A LOT of jargin used (without links to the tooltips i got lost reading it).

Any help will be appreciated.

1. Yes

2. Lots of people tend to use Ritualist as a secondary for Splinter Barrage, which is using the elite Barrage combined with the weapon spell Splinter Weapon for lots of damage on multiple targets. I play a ranger for my main, and from personal experience, rangers dont really require a secondary profession. They have enough defense and offense so that a secondary proffession isnt really called for.

Excellent guide. The information is easy to read and understand, it lays out pretty much everything you need to know about rangers.

Also remember you will be able to change your secondary prof freely once you are a bit through the storyline

I'm a ranger myself and I rarely use secondary. I think I chose mesmer when I was starting out, which was sometimes useful

Your are taking the correct route. The game has greatly changed over the last few years and starting over as if it was a new game is the best method. Don't delete old characters as they will supply you with birthday gifts (minipets) that you can sell for gold. You will find that things cost less as prices have dropped over the years.

Welcome back and have fun.

As to secondary, since you're starting with only Proph and Factions, I'm going to say you can start out choosing what you like because it doesn't take very long to get your PvE character to the point where you're allowed to switch secondary professions.

If you have only Prophecies it takes a while, but you can take your Prophecies Ranger to Factions and be not too far away from the switch ability.

As for "best" PvE Ranger build it's more a matter of taste. Were it me, I'd vote R/Me because I did all the vanquishing on my Ranger while running a Broad Head Arrow and Epidemic build. Of course, I also usually had a hero minion master and the Volley skill from EotN. But I still think the ability to daze a tough caster and spread to all the foes near him, too, would be my must-have.

Realize that using things like discordway requires heroes - I'm not sure if that requires either NF or EotN or both of them, but all the popular *way builds now tend to be based on heroes. You won't get those with only Proph and Factions.

Actually, given the lack of heroes, perhaps you might be best of as R/Mo or R/Rt to start. Monks and Ritualists have rechargeable resurrection skills. I remember that was often important to me before heroes.

Welcome back!
