Don't make a mesmer, they can't deal damage and they die easily.

Yeah, and they can't solo anything.

Why anyone would want one is beyond me.

Make an Ele unless you like getting right up in the middle of the fight. If you like getting right up into the middle of the battle, go with a Warrior or Dervish. Or, if you want a challenging profession to master and delve into the PvP side of things, a Mesmer is the way to go.

That will be $5.00, please.

Try all classes and see which one you have the most fun with, both in pvp and pve.

1. PICK A CLASS YOU ENJOY PLAYING! Can't stress that enough.
2. If you really want to pick in terms of ease of play/farming, go ele.

Make something that you'd enjoy playing.

Try something that isn't played that often like a para (a non imbagon para).

Your main character should be something you ENJOY playing - that's the trump card here. Why shell out 600 - 700K (or whatever it is these days) for Obsidian Armor for a character you don't enjoy playing? And why spend hours and hours playing through the game and grinding titles when you're not enjoying the experience?

Personally, I've had a ton of fun getting GWAMM with my Mesmer. It took a bit to learn how to play the profession effectively, but the challenge is part of the fun. (And her Obby armor is sexy!) In PvE, Mesmers don't really shine until they get into Hard Mode, but they still do just fine in normal mode in the right hands.

Edit: And what Chrisworld said!

Mesmers have 2 nearly worthless attributes and a pile of PvP skills that do little in PvE.

Yes, make a sin so you can get gold and items. No room or time for creativity that leads to lackluster results.

Hey, Pro advice here: if you're smart make a mesmer. If not, like 99.99% (just a guess based on personal encounters over the years) of Guild Wars players then make a joke class like a dervish or ele where you just have to press your skills on recharge lolmycatcandothat.

Anyone who slated mesmers, you fail. Your ignorance is beyond my comprehension. My guess is you tried and failed to play a mesmer because you wern't smart enough.

lmao! You're a perfect example and it says your profession is Me/ under your avatar haha. You should change that, you've tried and failed at mesmer ;(

Mesmer fans, high five! Mesmer is and always will be the greatest class in gw.

Umm, you guys saying Mesmers are good professions because someone said they deal no damage... you do realize this is in a thread where the OP is asking us to help him pick a profession without giving any information as to what he likes... I believe a Mesmer would not be a good idea because of that, just some food for thoughts why promoting Mesmers is not always a good idea.

In PvE? These skills have a place in PvE?

Arcane Larceny
Arcane Thievery

Signet of Weariness
Arcane Languor
Psychic Instability

Power Leech
Spirit Shackles
Signet of Recall
Signet of Humility
Lyssa's Balance
Shatter Storm
Signet of Disenchantment
Signet of Midnight

Feel free to add any interrupt you wish or slow down skill. Normal mode you should run them over and hard mode interruption isn't good. Web of Disruption, Cry of Frustration, etc.

Crippling Anguish with YMLaD (non-mesmer skill) works wonders in Norn solo quests and the mission where you stop the crystal runner. So I didn't add that one...

So... you only wanna make a char to get it obby?
Just play the profession you like to play, read on wiki, guru what they can do or try em out one by one.
If you ask: what shall *I* make then I just say my 2 favorite professions.

I'll agree with you but the same can be said for skills across all classes. Maybe moreso for mesmers but why are we focusing on PvE? The OP never mentioned they wanted a character solely for PvE, only that they wanted obby armor so to say mesmer was a bad profession choice is ignorant. Even so, Mesmers make some aspects of PvE e.g. titles (which includes missions vanquishing and so on) a joke because they are so diverse. Sure they aren't great at farming nor are paragons and we all know sins are farming gods.

Each class has it's strengths in different formats of play but overall as a profession the Mesmer class is anything but bad. I can't fathom how anyone could say otherwise. It's easily the most interesting and diverse class, i could go on. Mesmers are only as powerful as the people controlling them and the sky's the limit!

If he/she is making a mesmer, then it'll mainly be used in PvP. I have yet to see a good build be used in PvE (no matter the guild, friend, or pug). There is the classic Urgoz Cryway builds, but that requires other players to have CoP.

OP didn't mention warrior? Warriors are a damage class that can be further buffed by necromancers. Warriors can do well in both sides of the game.

in practice, I want 1 pg main mene not repent of spending time and money ... I have the following pg: lv 20 PvE ranger, assassin, Elementalist, Necromancer, Monk, war, mesmer lv 15 pre searing, I would not want him to choose 1 main character in the future intrigues with the penta obsidian made. I want a character that is strong both in PvP in PvE (I do not like the assassin, and later in the year-end nerf shadow form) and I do not like Monk, Ritu, the necro I use it only for me (DOA )

As others have said, make what you want.
Try them out a bit until you find one that you like.

If you're going just for the pricest armor, I'd go ranger...only one that looks decent imo. And aside from that, rangers can be fun to play.
