Okay, what's with the serious run up in the value of celestial pigs? They're less rare than certain other limited editions (Ceretadon for example) but seemingly going for 900k. Heck, they're not even very good looking. Is there something I'm missing here, other than the fact that a bunch of people think they can make some good cash?

I know supply/demand blah blah blah, but seriously, what's up? (I'd have put this in PC, but that's usually not used for discussion).

Only traders buy and sell such pets, to generate quick cash.

Pigs are shit - celestial or not.

Who can say on the exact number of them but they are likely the rarest celestial minipet because of what you had to do to get them. The mini pig had a bug during it's initial release where the rate was extremely high and they became common. A lot of people chucked them not knowing the next year a collector would appear going 5:1 on the celestial version. That collector was the only way to get one aside from trading another player.

You say 900k, but I've seen at least 2 in Kamadan for 250 ecto. Ecto is around 5k, so that would make it more like 1250k! I've given up hope to get my hands on one...

meh, they can only raise in price because they are no longer being generated while still being consumed by halls. supply can only lower and they are worth a lot of money just based on rarity alone anymore, even if they arent cool looking.

I wonder how many halls are still needing to be filled? Now that halls are account-wide (at least as far as GW2 is concerned) I'd hazard that most people who want to fill their monument have already done so, at least with the 20 pet minimum.

In addition, the CelePig is less rare than other limited pets (Ceretadon for example) yet are worth 10x as much.

Doesn't make economic sense, thus the title of the thread. The value is most likely based on greed, speculation, and the "It's rare thus I must have it" syndrome.

But I must admit I'm still baffled.

Dedicated cele pig pretty much doesn't sell. I tried, there was almost no interest.
So the value is very much tied to the HoM

That's not the case at all. The Celestial Pigs have been going for this price for several months, both ingame and out on the price check forums and on the auctions.

I think it's possible that Celestial pigs are rarer than most minipets, probably more so than the Ceratadons. Not a lot of people got them, I know I seriously tried to collect my five piggies but they got so exorbitantly pricey at the time that it just wasn't doable. Think about it; before the collector for the celestial pig, the regular minipigs weren't even a joke; they were garbage(though I loved mine ). They were the most worthless minipet, you could barely even give them away. Because of that, a lot of people gave theirs away, or dare I say just discarded them, for storage space. The market wasn't as saturated with them as it should have been considering that a year before there were probably more of them in-game than there were players and public opinion about how worthlessly many there were of them. So, five piggies were difficult (or just expensive) to get because there was such a run on them.

Couple that with the bling factor of having a walking firework following you around, something the Cereatadon can't hold a candle to I'm sad to say, and the undedicated celestial pigs are in low supply after two years with no refreshment.

I have to agree though, I do think the price is a tad on the high side for the little guys.

Well, based on this, my regular piggies (i was on vacation during the celestial pig debacle) should be even rarer than celestial ones.

WTS regular piggie 2 stacks!

I own 3 Cereatadon's and I gotta agree with you, they're a horrible pet. I was surprised to see they'd topped 100k, given their massive degree of suckage.

Also, given the Chinese New Year cycle, celestial piggies should be coming back in a few years. hmm...time to buy all those worthless regular piggies from people...

Bear in mind people are also buying those frog weapons for more than 10g apiece, which is shocking.

Tulip bulbs in Holland in the 1600's? or 1700's ran up in price to become worth more than their weight in gold in a speculative runup by traders. Then crashed in price later when Walmart started to sell them in 1992 for $3.99 a bag. Something like that. I forget my financial history lesson, but you get the point.

Someone asked what a ded pig is worth. I dedicated one of my 5 cele pigs I still have on a storage account about 3 weeks ago and sold it for 50k once I had a statue. So one click of the button loses you about 1,200,000 gold. It was so fun I would do it again but the HOM only lets you make one statue.

Someone said that there are more cele pigs than ceratadons. I would say no one can prove either side, however, the market price is determined by supply and demand and given the price, I would hazard a guess the poster is woefully mistaken. Unded cele pigs would appear to be much more rare on the supply side, and/or in much higher demand to fill up that slot on the HOM.

They are more rare than most people think. Far more rare than for example Ceratadon or other low end limited minis. They were exceptionally hard to get even just after the event when they were made available, exceptionally hard for something that was supposed to be everywhere then.

Another thing that may increase it's price is the fact Celestial Miniatures are a trated like a separate collection in HoM - It's divided to Birthday Minis (1,2,3,4), Limited Minis and Celestial Minis separately. So as all other Celestial Minis are far more common, there are lots and lots of people who miss just the Pig to have a complete set - this adds extra demand for them, compared to other limited minis.
