How many people still play GW?
Nightmare_Pwn
Is there any actual statistics or something or has there been a noticeable drop/increase in various districts etc?
Any help on this Q would be great

well, GW surpassed the 6 million boxes sold mark last year. however, given there's three games and one expansion, it's really hard to know just how many actual players there are. my estimate is around 400k, but it's just a guess.
Covah
during boardwalk games etc there are 150+ american dis and districts hold around 250 people so thats around 38k people right there not including multiple accounts and all that. i'm guessing around 200k people.
Island Guardian
ill go with 3,000 kids\adults.

I'll go with about 300,000-500,000. And that isn't a small number believe it or not. As Moriz said...they SOLD 6 millon boxes but we likely have less than a million players playing. WoW is the same way, they sold 12 or so million boxes but probably have roughly 2-3 million people playing.

I'll say 500,000-750,000.
Theres load of people in events, etc.

I find the European English areas sparsely populated these days compared to say 2 years ago.
However the American districts are pretty busy so I tend to operate there.
That said I don't get to team up with other players outside my guild so cannot say if the players are running missions in pve or just going for gold and titles.

On-topic: Although 6000k copies have been sold keep in mind that MANY people own many alt accounts. I for one own 13 alt accounts so that is +14 to the count right there alone.
As for how many people still play religiously? Well... My educated guess would be ~25,000 or so.

the biggest thing to ask is what do you consider still playing? i dont consider logging in just for the big events still playing. still playing to me or being an active account is logging in 1-3 times a weeks minimum. doing the math of the 6 million units sold. if everyone owned all 4 games, that would only be 1.5 million accounts. as we know theres alot of people who own multiple accounts and alot who dont own all 4 games. i myself have 3 separate accounts which only 1 has all 4 games. theres alot who own multiples because its cheeper to buy a new account/game then it is to buy a storage pane or character slot. reading the forums in the past there was alot who bought extra games to take advantage of the free z-keys for placing their monthy pvp bets. theres been alot of accounts banned over the last few years too. i would be willing to bet theres only 100,000-300,000 acounts still active and its probably in the 100,000-150,000 range during non major event times.

I believe GW hit the 5mil mark before Z-keys arrived. And until this last year when the game prices dropped, not that many people bought multiple accounts. You cannot go by the guru posters as members are more likely to be "hard-core" GW players.
There is a whole world of GW players who don't belong to forums, never heard of Tournament House, and don't feel the need to have a huge amount of storage mules. I even run into players who don't know about festivals and events.
The GW player base now stays fairly stable. The games are cheaper to buy and GW is still not Pay-To-Play. This makes it very attractive to everyone. You cannot guess at numbers due to different time zone activity.

And kinda a pointless thread, since we wouldn't know official numbers. I'd reckon it's nowhere near 400k, maybe half that - but what would I know.

Sorry, this is wrong. The max any town or district can hold is 100 people on regular days and 200 during special (festivel) events.

6000k is 6 million, which is a bigger number than 25,000

Let's take the 6M boxes.
Many players probably have 3 or 4 chapters, meaning the actual number of potential players most likely is closer to 2M.
Then we have the players who bought several copies for various reasons.
That would leave 1.5-1.7M potential players. I know several players with multiple accounts so even this number might be too high.
Now we take time in account.
Many players moved on to a new game. From the entire group I started playing with in 2007 I only see a few online once in a while. The rest moved to other games. Newer friends from 2008 also became less active. Many got bored with the game. The only times I see them around is during festivals.
I hardly have contact with people I met in 2006, so cannot say much about them.
I do speak to people from other guilds once in a while. I see people become inactive and hear the same from them. Based on 1.5M potential players I'd say maybe 250.000 who log in more than once every 14 days.
I have several good friends that pop up once in a while to say hello, chat a little and log off again without actual gameplay.
Events generate more active play, but I don't consider those players active.
I hear about new players once in a while, so new blood is still coming in. But most join because of RL friends, only few because they thought the box was cool and GW is cheap nowadays.
I didn't see much of a decline in activity in the various zones I enter somewhat frequent so the number of players seems stable.
Just an educated guess

lol!
I'd say around 500k. You have to remember, most people have finished numerous titles, events, mastered farming, etc. and now it's becoming more of a wait to see what GW2 will bring rather than an evolving game like it once was. There are still the loyal players but the game itself is slowly losing its playability.

Well I just started, so I hope there are still people playing, lol. I've only seen Pre so far, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of people there. My friends that still play say that there are quite a few around when I get to Post (who knows when that'll be).

Most people don't play until holiday events.
