doesn't matter when you got your computer. The problem is most likely with your graphics, try updating your drivers or something.
Edit: While you figure this out, try running guild wars in windowed mode.

The age of a pc alone doesn't really say much about how well it handles video games. Although GW is a fairly old game and has always run surprisingly well on some of the lower end pc builds (at least as far as gaming pc's go.)
It does sound like some kind of PC issue - don't know if it's hardware or software. There's a nice subforum here for tech support full of very crafty, helpful folks.

Try lowering the quality of GW within the client. If that doesn't work, go to the web site of your graphics card's manufacturer and download the latest driver update. If that does nothing, try lowering the screen resolution and see if that helps. If none of that works, it's beyond my limited level of expertise.

instead of minimizing press ALT+Enter to put it in window mode.

Guild Wars doesn't like to be minimized. It's doesn't handle it very well. Tends to max out the processor when you do that. On slower machines, it can lock up the computer completely anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.
There's not much you can do about it, other than upgrading your computer a little. It's still going to freeze/lag/whatever when you do it though, regardless of you specs.

Hardware/software issue. Most likely your PC isn't a "gaming" (a midline/highend) PC if it doesn't load/minimize/ect whenever you perform tasks.
Meh. My guess would be hardware if anything. Do you have a video card installed (not intergrated)? If so, what specs? It can make a word of difference.
