I finished Factions and Nightfall on my survivor ritualist and here are a few of the things I found very helpful (I agree with trying to get survivor the 'real' way, it's much more rewarding). I only had to map out once or twice to avoid death but maybe I could've survived those by staying as well.
- FLAG! Always remember you can flag your heroes/henchmen forward into dangerous mobs. Also, if you're getting overwhelmed you can flag them to the spot and you can run away, leaving the aggro with them.
- AGGRO CONTROL! Very important, but you already know this I imagine.
- As Magma said, ranged chars are much safer since you can manage aggro and kite/retreat better. As a ritualist, spirit spamming helpt me a lot also.
- Get proper heroes with good skills and runed up. Very important. I lost connection during the Eternal Grove mission during the afflicted waves. I was guarding one side with my heroes. After about a minute I reconnected and I had been in no danger thanks to my heroes.
- Don't play the game for the first time on a survivor character. This is very important as you have experienced. Play it on one or more non-survivor chars first so you know what kind of enemies to expect where. You would've know about the Hydras in advance and been more careful with them.
- Use wiki. To see strategies and the enemies in certain areas and missions. There is also a survivor guide with links to a few easy high-rewarding xp quests.
- Skill capture. The reward (5,000 xp at level 20) of skill capping outweighs the danger of facing bosses. Almost all bosses are pushovers in normal mode. The dangerous or hard-hitting ones can be managed by flagging heroes/hench in to kill and you going in after it's killed to capture. I had the luck of a double rewards for skill capture weekend when I did my survivor. 10k xp per skill cap is amazing and I captured around 50 skills that weekend (500k xp + play). Wiki has a list of all the bosses, just pick the easy ones just outside towns etc.

Disagree. My first survivor char died on the Isle of the Nameless at the burning/poison/etc guys because I was running around with a guildie and I completely forgot it was my survivor char (yes I felt pretty stupid). My second survivor char was my ritualist (before rit overhaul so it should be even easier now) and I managed r3 survivor. It's really not that difficult if you know what you are doing. Doing kilroy for hours and hours is a waste of time in my opinion, not to mention lags hurt much more in a solo quest than in a h/h situation. Also, getting survivor the 'real' way is much more rewarding.
