How long it took for the Stylist to make his way into our game.

As we all know the GW Stylist-dude was added as part of the 4th Year Anniversary Update. It went live on April 23rd, 2009 and it enabled modifying the appearance of our characters, something that was previously impossible. Or so it would seem.

The picture was added on March 2nd, 2007.
The interesting part?
The boy is clearly a Prophecies guy, yet he has a Factions haircut.
The picture was added by Emily Diehl - an A.Net dev.

Which means that character modifications were possible at least 2 years prior to it's implementation.
Makes you wonder what other things are already possible.

upier, I've decided that you don't really play GW, you just get in-game to buy armors and play dress up

You do raise a good point though. Maybe the devs already have an auction house going.

This means nothing at all, it's all in the game database, haircuts are just another number in the config files.

"hairstyle= 928"
"campaign= 1"

All this really confirms is they went into the database on their offline server and changed one number in a backend database table of characters... good catch though.

Most the offcial wiki armor models use cross-campaign combinations, and always have - nothing very special about that guy.

It did use to be frustrating though!

Dev servers...Then stuff thats not actulaly implimented.
They had to do rework the actual system to actually let us do it and thats why originally when we loaded our characters on the date they were all mixed up in models.

Yeah, it really makes me wonder what options would need just that final push to make it into the game.
Full hero parties anyone?

Content that's in the game but hidden until time comes to sell it at hilarious prices?

Sure is Bethesda in here!

Maybe it's the cynic in me, but I don't see why people get upset about ridiculous Bethesda-style revenue models. You're passing off a significant share of your own prospective costs to people with skewed values willing to spend big bucks for marginal game improvements. How is this bad?

It's a win-win for you and the developer, and we have to assume it's a win for the people that actually engage in the micro-content transactions. Until ANet starts selling tangible advantages (*cough* XTH *cough*) as micro-transactions, there's no problem. The whole phenomenon just reduces the price you'd otherwise pay for the game, at the end of the day.

Sure, you'd be marginally better off if they'd give you the overpriced microcontent for free, but that would ultimately hit you in the wallet.

or i it's because devs can change/create whatever the hell they want on some sort of dev server for testing purposes. uhDURRRRRR.

what do you think when the devs were editing the room duncan the black is in they had to log into guild wars and manually play through the dungeon until they got to the last room and saw how it looked? if you can be brave for a second and use your brain, you'd find logic in a lot of everyday things that most likely baffle you right now.

One assumes they generally don't actually play the game, if one looks at the state of PvE balance.

Emily could well have used the modelling tools that are used by content creators to create NPCs, armors, etc. so this may not have been a feature that was available in game for everyone to toy with.

For all we can tell it could be a photoshop! (as she's a graphic designer I believe)

EDIT:

This is different, it's a completely conscious decision of designers (not programmers or marketing or ...) so that the game doesn't go into certain types of gameplay (e.g. total solo play? no more pugging, etc.)

Hurr, they're the ones making the game and player models are made of different parts you can choose. Obviously it's always been possible, but it has to be economically convenient before they do it.
