Trying something out
Soni D
So I took a screenie of Hayda that I liked during Halloween (in CB)
This is the screenie here:
But i thought the Nika person (people?) behind her sort of ruined it... so i decided to try and photoshop her out. I had no idea how to do this >_> so I experimented and came up with this:
(yes Xandra sort of hijacked the picture too )
Anyways i know it's not perfect and any help on doing it better or improving would be much appreciated I'm a newb hehe. Thanks for your time.

u can either use the clone tools and blot out the person behind OR you can matte paint it away. if you wanna go further u can cut the whole figure out and superimpose it on a new bg.
it looks pretty ok how u've done it so far. but the waterfall that you painted needs abit of smoothing over with some low opacity paint strokes to make it more consistent with the rest of it

If you want to preserve your character without the "fuss" I recommend that you cut her out (using either pen tool or the lasso) and paste her on top of the blured out edges from editing. To remove fuss poking out, use the clone stamp to clone over her fussed skin and the edges will maintain their sharpness.
If you are looking for her to blend in a little, use a 2px feather when you cut her out, that will remove possible extra pixels remaining from what you edited away. The feather is on the lasso tool.

I have a problem with PSE where it randomly will crash and I don't know why. So every time i use lasso tool it crashes in the middle of doing it
EDIT: tried painting the waterfall a bit, i think it looks a little better. (Maybe?)

Does it work with the pen tool? The pen tool's work path can be turned into a selection by pressing right mouse button and then select "make selection", I don't know if you can make a feather on it though, but you could probably find a way around it, like stroking the path with a two pixel 0 hardness eraser.

I can only find a pencil tool, are they the same thing? I don't have full version of photoshop, i have Elements I don't know if this is different. When I right click it just comes up with different brushes
GeminiJuSa
I looked at a screen pic from photoshop elements(4.0), and sadly I don't think you have it. The lasso is your best bet, but if it crashes, I recommend that you re-install it.
Soni D
I have Elements 6.0 but I don't think it has changed very much so no pen tool, oh well I can make do
Thank you for your help, I think I'll continue experimenting with this, trying out lasso as you suggested.
In regards to the crashing problem, I have re-installed it multiple times and it has not fixed it, although i believe it started when i moved it to a different drive to save space. Although I don't expect a solution to this here!
Bedtime for me for now, cheers

do a memory and disk check, you could have some corruption that is causing the crash.
Soni D
I did a check and there were some errors, it hasn't crashed so far so hopefully it's fixed (thanks hoodie )
i was playing around with lasso tool, i managed to cut out my necro, then didn't know what to do with the background >_>
so put a random scenery in there... in case anyone's interested lol:
then the batteries in my mouse died and the tiny usb mouse hurts my hand so i gave up.
not sure how to get rid of those white outlines. Anyway i'm super tired, bedtimes.

The outlines can be reduced by using a feather on the lasso

I usually use the magic wand tool. I tweak the sensitivity until it picks up the right edges. I also make sure I have Anti Alias set to 0 so there's sharp lines to work with. Taking your screenshot in a place with a background that contrasts helps too.
Soni D
I'll have a go with each when i get some batteries for my mouse, right now tiny mouse = fail
How do I set Anti Alias though?

On GW, you can find it in the graphics option (F11) panel. There should be a dropdown that lets you turn AA off.
Soni D
Ah i never noticed that, thanks
