Sponsoring Districts for Canthan New Year 2010
Shanaeri Rynale
I'm not sure how others do it, but we always have all the ingredients on one person as a runner (with another person with a complete set as backup)
Since CNY started DVDF has done a total of nearly 180 districts and ran them for the full 24 hours and never missed a district. If I remember correctly, 7 times we've had a disconnect from somone during the running.
Had we not had the backup runner those districts would have failed with the resulting players not getting the full reward.
OFC it's entirely up to guilds how they do it, just that we like a belt and braces approach.

What are teh chances for that to happen? Really, lets say a guild of 50 people are hosting a district. Lets say they will plan their stuff so at any moment at least 15 of them will be online in that district at the right time for finale. What are the chances that all those 15 player getting 007 error or having connection problems?
And I guarantee that except for American/european district 1-5 and maybe InternationalDistrict 1-2, there will be no problems with full district message. Unless that guild/alliance already have enough(or maybe too many) people in that district. |
There are 5 cooks looking for a combination of 22 different items from all the different campaigns, including EOTN, to use make a special dish for dinner. This is like Nicolas on steroids.
For crying out loud people, look at this list -
Iridescent Griffon Wing, Tangled Seed, Fiery Crest, Smoking Remains, Alpine Seed, Guardian Moss, Celestial Essence, Dragon Root, Archaic Kappa Shell, Mantis Pincer, Kraken Eye, Naga Hide, Igneous Spider Leg, Ebon Spider Leg, Bonesnap Shell, Azure Crest, Unctuous Remains, Truffle, Ebon Spider Web, Half-Eaten Blob, Azure Remains, Icy Lodestone
All CT (and any other guilds who sponsor a district) is saying is that his guild will send a couple of people to that district with all of the items required and guarantee that you will get all 16 gift bags and 5 crates of fireworks and you don't have to do a @%$# thing but be there.
I just gave you the list of stuff required - either you thank the guilds who have already collected everything and are going to sponsor districts for us or get your butt out there and start collecting all this crap - and don't complain if all you get is 2 gift bags and no fireworks.
Lhim
This thread is useless. You could have just done it when the time comes, like one guy said. Just see if that particular district is not already 'sponsored'. Now I give you about a 3% chance of not having any other guilds trying to 'sponsor' those districts you reserved.

To the person who doesn't understand what the OP is talking about: Reserving a district for CNY is not to have a private party, but to play hosts to everyone and anyone who happens to be in that district by providing all the ingredients for the feast. The hosting guild/alliance may also have give aways/games for everyone in the district to enjoy.
To the trolls: Shut up and go away.

There will be probably 200-300 districts I honestly don't understand your flame. Just sit somewhere else... jeeez. You are reacting like American 69 will get 2 stacks of ectos from the celestial and Spanish 1 will get an alpine seed and a charr carving
The alliance wants to be together so fair enough, I won't deliberatly sit in those districts

Personally I think the whole reserving thing is a bit childish. "I don't want any non-alliance member is this district so I'm going to post on some forum that will some how enable me the right to do so!" I don't mind sponsoring, but isn't this going a bit too far?

Why is nobody actually reading and comprehending the things said in this topic?
Did you bother to read? They are talking about sponsoring. Please, PLEASE post a quote from anywhere here saying that they are reserving private districts for only their guild members. In fact;
They actually say, right there, that they are reserving the districts for the community, not for [bots] or any other guild/alliance.

They are saying;
"We [insert guild name] are reserving the sponsorship of district [insert number] so that all may join us and be assured of getting the full festival prize. We are "reserving" this district so that there is no squabbling come Canthan New Year, and so that people can plan ahead and know which districts will be sponsored."
I think an issue might be the usage of the word 'reserving' instead of 'sponsoring'. Though why people have such a difficult time with that I have no idea.

Our guild has hosted a district (singular) since the beginning as well. We'll let our allies know where we're afking and monkeying around and carrying on and such, and whoever else manages to share in the rewards, good for them. The problem occurs when, let's say during the 2nd/3rd/4th years, when DVDF or whoever would host, oh I dunno, let's just round up and say 100 districts that year, it left approximately 50 or so districts for the rest of THE ENTIRE GODDAMN POPULATION OF GW to try and host for the community as well.
Our guild would have been camping out in some random, high numbered district before the event started, only to have other well intentioned guilds come in and start all caps shouting how they are hosting the district now. This would happen all... damn... day. We'd get bumped out of "our" () original district several times cause the other do-gooders or would-be self-promoters were also trying to host districts. Ofc there would be some nice ppl that would come in, asked if the district was hosted, find out it was, say "cool" and move on. More often than not tho, there were the knucklehead types that came in and essentially spammed how awesome their guild/alliance was because they are (now) "taking care" of the district.
I'm not trying to dump on DVDF necessarily, but what I described does happen. While hosting districts is a nice gesture, complications come with trying to perform a public service, especially when it isn't necessarily welcomed or otherwise creates headaches for similarly well-intentioned players. Remember that idiom about the road to hell?
Kordis Sol
i think thats all good points well made.
personally if my little gang find that someone is shouting loud about 'hosting' - let them shout. we still need to deliver the items as we all want our little glowy animals at the end of the day. as far as im concerned the rules for my lot go as follows: i have a couple of thousand items to hand in - ill do the main ingredients, you hand in the surplus and keep half the tokens for the effort.
at least all this 'hosting' means that everybody can lag more in other districts when everyone hops to grab more pressies... >: )

This is part of the problem. Huge mega alliances or whatever think they are doing a public service by hosting every damn district under the sun, which leaves fewer districts available for the smaller guilds/alliances who are trying to host a district for their own little group. With fewer districts available, people start getting into pissing contests because toes will get stepped upon when the smaller groups are crowded into a smaller space.

It was only last year(and I suspect this year) that district hogging became an issue. We would always announce that we were intending to use this district and if anyone else said 'Hey we got here first' we'd move. I think on one occasion we had to move to Italian because the others were full.
Last year we frequently offered a district we had found empty to a smaller guild/alliance so as to give them a chance to do their thing.
The only time we never moved a district was once we had posted the locations on guru on GWO, and that we always did 10-15 mins before each event to give us plenty of time to find a spare.
As I said I expect this year to become even worse for district hogging, and so it would be great and in the spirit in which the whole CNY thing started off if others could make the same pledge.
I.e don't take over a district if someone else is already there and if there is'nt a spare, then share it giving equal credit.
The event lasts for 24 hours so theres enough time and slots for everyone to have a go

OP should have put this in the Community section, would not have gotten all the hate from people for something is done repeately every year by many guilds/alliances.
Never have seen anyone argue over a district. What is the point of that? What does that look like anyway?
Guild 1: GTFO we are going to use all the items we spent a month rounding up in this district.
Guild 2: WTF ever, we are going to use our ingredients you ahole
Guild 1: We are finishing that dessert dammit!!!
Guild 2: Too late numbnuts HAHAHAHHA.
Guild 1: Just for that we are going to line up all our ele's w/chaos gloves and sync dance in your face!!!
Guild 2: Well we are all going to turn into Yetis and sit on your ele's so noone can see them.
Do these guilds have such a need to get "credit" for this event that this turns into an arguement? Seriously?

It gets better,
Last night one of my guilds allies was trying to big up the fact that they 'sponsor' chinese districts 1-3 just because 'they have a blade radio dj (oooh *shivers*) and gaile grey will be coming to visit'....
big deal.... shes only a person, allbeit a person whose name happens to appear prominently in the staff section of the game. she still just comes to an office, does some work goes home again... the whole bragging rights thing is pathetic. everyones off playing aion anyway...

You need a minimum of one for each event.
I don't think there is a problem with Guilds or Alliances sponsoring an event. It is a really awesome thing to do and helpful to those people in smaller Guilds or without any at all that lets them enjoy all the benefits of Canthan New Year.
Our Alliance usually tries to 'sponsor' an event and we'll just try and find a random empty district when it goes live and then most people just go AFK between events anyway. I'm sure most people looking to help out aren't too bothered if they come across one that is already populated, they will just move on. Most people aren't too bothered which district they get either.
If people are QQing over trying to get ID1 or AD1 or whatever then just move on.

I really don't see why some posters are acting like it's a huge competition?
Always remember:
1.) Be courteous to the sponsoring guild/alliance.
2.) Be gracious to said guilds/alliances, for they gave you the opportunity to enjoy the 'high-end' part of the festivities!
3.) Thank your sponsor, (you don't need to kiss ass, just a thank you will do.)
4.) Dance! have fun! TALK to those in your district!
Seems easy enough to me?
I like the idea of knowing I won't have to 'stress' over whether or not all will be prepared for the feast, a generous guild/alliance has thought of it for me.
Have fun guys, I know I will!

My fiance and I were taking turns sleeping between events, unfortunately at one point we both fell asleep and did miss one of the events. We woke up near the end, managed to turn in 4 of the 5 meals, but didn't quite make it fast enough. I felt really bad about it. One of the people in the district obviously felt cheated that we fell asleep and started hollering at us. The rest of the district rose to our defense, which was really heart warming.
This year, I have plenty of caffeine to keep me awake so we shouldn't have to about that happening.

My guild/alliance has hosted a CNY district for the past couple of years and it's the highlight of my GW year at this point.
I'm happy to report that I already have all of the necessary ingredients (if nothing changes from previous years) sitting on a mule character ready for the festivities.
We are usually in int d13 ~ hope to see you all there!

My husband and I were new players last year. We started in Prophecies and really pushed to reach Lion's Arch to see what this "Canthan New Year" was. When we got there we found out we could reach Shing Jea. We were excited. We hadn't reached most of the areas where we could get the items for the meals and were wondering how we could have all the ingredients for the meals and get the maximum rewards. Then I stumbled on a post on Guild Wars Guru where guilds listed districts they were hosting. We thought it was so nice to know we could go to a district and everything would be provided - we didn't need to sweat it. It was a great service to us. The guild members in all districts we attended were very nice to all people attending - from their guild or not. We learned so much about the game from listening to the chat. It was a great experience for us.
I thank all guilds who do post the districts they are sponsoring. It helps make the Canthan New Year a great experience for all - and especially new players.

This has been an informative thread. Our guild is teeny tiny, but have collected everything for the event. I think we will just go district to district and find a non-hosted place to spread some love
thelessa
That sounds like a good idea, we also have a tiny guild and collected almost 2 sets.
tmakinen
As usual, the SoF alliance will host one E(English)D and one AD throughout the event (18 sets total) but we won't reserve any particular districts in advance. Instead, we just find a previously hostless district and camp that for the duration of the event (and mildly disapprove of guilds that crash in and claim the district as theirs before checking whether it's already hosted).
From the mechanical point of view, we've found that the best way to feed the chefs is to have one player per chef, each with a set of respective ingredients in the proper order, and one manager with a full set in reserve should one of the other players d/c.
We have had the sets ready for some time now and welcome everybody to share this festive occasion with us. As an added bonus, you might also get a chance to witness the largest herd of reindeers ever seen in GW!
Also, remember to farm some glittering dust in anticipation of the festival quests! The trader always runs out of dust by the start of the event and even before that the price hits the roof.

Most of the posts beforehand were from people who had not read and understood the actual intent of this thread and that, frankly, ticks me off. The people who posted in here who were being debased were people who were trying to do something nice for the community and provide a ready made list of districts that were going to be sponsored, but everyone seemed to ignore that for a completely off the wall interpretation of what was going on. You included, at least from what I read. I did not, and still do not, know how else to explain it other than what I and many others posted.
When Ct Pound wrote "Host the Feast for Community" (which is in a quote from the post of mine that you are quoting by the way) I do not know many better ways of saying "We have all the feast items and are going to provide them for the chefs at the districts we are hosting while the community is in attendance." To argue that they should have worded that better is, at best, an extremely weak argument in semantics when the community well knows what happens with the hosted, sponsored districts at Canthan New Year. If you knew what was going on, perhaps suggesting a rewording of the post would have been better than a sarcastic reply that added nothing but more noise to an already stupid line of conversation.
While the original post might have been poorly worded (I do not think that was ever the case) sponsoring districts is nothing new. I do not understand how people were under the impression that this topic was specifically made to reserve a district for an alliance and kick all non-members out. And that mistaken impression for which people refused to accept as a gross misinterpretation of the intent was making it so a lot of admirable people were being attacked.
Kordis Sol
having read a lot of the 'sponsored' districts above i still forsee squabbles : (. I heard that one of my alliance guilds always 'hosts' trad chinese 1-3 every year. I guess that wont be the case this year as 1) they are doing it with blade radio (aka 3 djs listening to metallica in their bedrooms) and 2) They are all off playing aion.
Good luck to all. we have 66 complete sets and are looking to sit happy in polish 9 or whatevers nearest. Hopefully this mystery gift might be an addition to our costume collection. I would like a dragon costume the size of a siege devourer please!
