why do people bother to post a s/b lower than r/b over at the sell and high end forums?
(s/b = starting bid, r/b= reserve bid= wont sell unless this price is met)
and why do people bid lower than the r/b?
this should not be allowed imo as it is like a free bump.
Why bother?

It's supposed to entice potential buyers and make them become dedicated to the auction by setting a really low starting bid. Honestly, reserve bids aren't supposed to be revealed so there's no real point to it, but there's no point in trying to make people stop either.

i agree, but not showing r/b should be requirment for those threads.
it annoys me as it is a post that could be regarded as a non bid.

a guess on my part is maybe they know the real price on a item and base their bid on that. I mean i seen a 2k item in sells section being sold for b/o of 10k. but its just a guess on my end.

what i was thinking of was mostly the s/b 1gold with r/b of 100e etc. its free bumping.

Low s/b means they'll get lots of replies (if selling something decent), which in turn keeps their thread near the top.
It's a common tactic these days.

It's free bumping only if bidders fall for it. Yes, it's an approach seen a lot these days, but I see it fail to get bids more often that I see it get lots of "1k, 2k, 5k..." bids.
When a seller has a hidden reserve and an extremely low starting bid, I rarely bother to bump their thread with my bid. I either buy one from someone else or PM the seller to discuss the actual price.

Reserve bid means that the OP reserves the right not to sell below that price, but he still might.
I have seen people sell below R/B on more than one occasion (usually with unrealistic prices listed) and bidders are ever an optimistic lot: "I'm sure I will get this Tormented Weapon for 5K"

Low bid threads are a free +1.
Best case scenario: you get the item cheap.
Worst case scenario: someone covers your bid and you +1.
The seller is exploiting the fact that some users care about post count for personal gain - keeping the thread topped. It's hardly the most effective strategy for doing that, but every little bit helps.
