It won't let you salvage materials if your inventory is full, even if the item your salvaging is going to get destroyed making space

Yeah, clear your inventory first and then salvage some things.
You don't really need to learn how to salvage things, it just happens when you salvage, you get things.
Normal Salvage kits just give you standard materials, nothing special.
Expert Salvage kits get you normal OR rare materials, you also get the ability to salvage a mod from an item (with chance of breaking item)
Superior Salvage kits are the same as expert, only have more charges.
Perfect Salvage Kits don't break items when salvaging mods from them, cannot salvag materials from items with the perf salv. kit.
As far as "learning" to salvage goes.. keep in mind pretty much anything can be farmed and salvaged with kits to get materials in different areas and different items yield different things. Expert and superior are same, one has more charges as I said and items that have "Highly Salvageable" on them... use an expert kit and chances of getting a rare material are high, as well as getting a load of normals if you don't get a rare.
If you are wondering about Identification kits aslo, generally they are all the same, when you get to the good ones, they still do the same thing just hold more uses. Also, to make money, pick up all the garbage items that drop, ID them to increase their value slightly (mostly from north shiverpeaks and onward) and merch the junk (each white item can increase by 2 gold up to quite a bit more so its a gamble). In the long run it can end up paying for another kit AS WELL as having some profit.

The best thing I can do for you is to direct you to wiki(s)
http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
There you can find all kinds of info about what salvages into what, what materials you may need, etc., etc..
It can be kind of a spoiler though, so use the wikis wisely.

What items are you trying to salvage? Some items, notably starter weapons and starter armor, cannot be salvaged at all.
