GW1 after GW2?
FrOzEnMaGe
how will GW1 look like when GW2 come out? will I finally hold halls for days and get my r15? or will Anet kill GW1 thus forcing people to move on?
what will happen?
what will happen?

I wouldn't worry about it just yet. there are still dollars to be had after people who never played GW1 see all the leet, uber items that having a full HoM gives. there will be foot-stomping and taking home of many balls. it will be of a proportion that the internets has never seen before.

Anet has earlier stated the server will be running as long as people will play it if but if its dead they will close it down since it isnt profitable to keep a dead server running..

The fewer people play GW1, the easier it will be to keep the servers up. Eventually, it might come down to a single server with lots of hard drives for the player data.
Note that as fewer people play, the game also loses it's attraction - so the number of people playing will likely go down ever faster (AS INTENDED, BTW).
There will be no need to shut down completely - it's the players who won't want to play.

Hopefully they'll reverse the drops back to the first few days of HM (ie neck deep in golds/elite tomes/etc.),it really wouldn't matter at thet stage.
They'll probably just alt f4 the servers though.

I think they will shut down all but international servers. Then all would have 1 server to play on, and it would be easier to judge if they are going to shut it down completley.

Guild wars will be dead after GW2 so I think they will just close it...Not right after the release ,but maybe in 1 month or so.

Never say never, IMO..

WG1 will be like a streethooker on crystal meth afther GW2 release.

i think since gw2 still wont be lvl based and the only difrence will be the grapics, the story and the weps
i think ppl will still buy gw1 since it is fun 2 =)
and if Anet will boost the grapics and do a few updates i think they can live next to eachother
(btw: if i havn't finished gw1 yet before gw2 comes out i will keep playing it and i think alot of players will)

Again, not necessarily. GW1 is still on the shelves, that's an indication for the positive right there. Here in Australia, sony were forced to give a massive amount of ppl refunds simply because they dropped the price of the ps1 too quickly. aNet can scarcely afford a debacle like that..

I think Guildwars will continue to live after Guildwars 2.
PvP is the thing that players will keep doing it's really good, unless if Guildwars 2 is coming with a simulair style of PvP.

After the HoM is sealed the life expectancy of GW1 will be about 5 minutes.

Updates will definitely dry up, but I don't think the game will die for quite a long time.. People will remain interested in holiday gear I'd bet, and I think we'll see a good number of new players who want to go back, either to experience more of the lore or just to build up the HoM.
Assuming of course there's no limit on how long we can add things to the HoM, which in my opinion there should be. But that's a different discussion.

I'm not sure where they said it, but they said something to the effect that GW1 will still be up and running and wont be shut down. It'll still have festivals, hats, etc. for many years to come.
Earth
I'm pretty sure they said the HoM will stay open after GW2 is released.

They can't shut down servers... ppl paid for this game.
If they won't keep a single server active when ppl still play, they'll have to pay back..
Compare it to buying say a computer IRL, and you were not allowed to use it after a year.. No, won't happen.
Cheers

I believe the word "wasteland" will be appropriate.
Not that it couldn't be currently applied to the PvP meta or the game in general.
iirc (and I think I do), Gaile and Joe Kimmes have said on GWW that the HoM of GW1 will remain open indefinitely. I'm assuming that once you link the accounts, you wont be able to earn any more benefits, but I think that you could essentially link them after you accomplish all you want to.

Considering there is a connection between the two games, you never know how much more they will allow you to do in GW1 to continually enhance your GW2 experience. There may be things you can do in GW2 to unlock another quest in GW1 that will in turn give you a new item in GW2. If something like that is done, it could keep both games going for a long time.

They will probably Alt+F4 the servers once they deem too expensive and the cost to keep the servers up and going != profit.
4thVariety
Take a look at NCsoft's financial reports. The costs of running the servers of ALL their MMOs (an all the Websites) are merely a footnote on page 8. Dirt cheap does not even describe it.

I mean, no one plays Diablo 1 online anymore... (sarcasm, incase you aren't capable of grasping that).
(Yes, it isnt 'online only', but people don't suddely stop playing games because of sequels. I, for one, am not even buying the sequel, so until they kick me off I'll still be playing Guild Wars 1.)

Accomplishments dedicated in GW1's Hall of Monuments will continue to update your GW2 account even after GW2's release. |
Feel free to look up the source of that statement yourself if you want, but I know they've said you may continue to update your HoM in GW1 after linking in GW2.

People saying a month, 90 days, whatever, I'm gonna guess are point blank wrong. Some people won't have the money to buy GW2 on release (after all, lots of casual GWers play it because it's free to play). Some don't want to migrate to GW2 at all. Many will wait to see if the HoM rewards in GW2 are worthwhile before they even begin their title hunting/HoM filling. It might not be the majority, but if the variables I listed can claim a few thousand players apiece, it'll stay open for a year or more.
