First day in gw, first impressions.
Lovele
Trial so far. The full version will arrive on 26 december. What can I say I am just fully impressed. The graphics are awesome. Even if I have a "not-so-good pc" my game works perfectly and the graphics are just awesome.
1. The first thing quest. Is there anyway to see who has quest for you? The only way I found out to do so is to run all over the town.
2. Paint's. I just got one randomly as a drop and lol. Nice item. Now I have a smexy pink bow =D
3. Secondary class? I don't know but is it really necesarry? What if I want to be only ranger? I made the quest at lvl 2 for the monk and he gave me 2 skills, then I made a quest at warrior and he gave me 3 skills and deleted the monk ones. I stopped here. I am asking you guys now wich 1 shall I pick me as a ranger. I am asking especially the experienced players. I have no idea wich 1 shall I pick. Wich 1 is the best for a ranger?
4. Attribuite points. I am almost level 4 and didn't distributed anyone so far because I don't want to mess up my build, so I need your help again. At level 20 will I have enought attribuite points to learn all the skills so I shall make no trouble and learn any I want, or you can sugest me where to put the attribuite points because as I said I rea;;y don't want to mess-up my build :S
5. Expansions of GW. Hm. Will I need to make a new char for every new expansion I buy? Because my plan is to work only on 1 char and make that one strong because I won;t be playing more than 1-2 hours a day 3 at the weekends. Right now I just ordered prophecies and wanna buy them in release order...Because all I want is to finish the quest and level-up to 20 fast and then just enter the pvp zone. Or I have to make a new char only for pvp? If yes can I make 1 with the same name from the roleplaying scenario? I really need some info here google won't help =(
6. Guild. I saw there are 2 types of guilds. PvP and PvE. This made me ... I don't know ... So wich 1 I shall enter ...? Again my playing style is to finish all the expansions and then just pvp and maybe farm bosses, dungeons(or something like that) and make a godly set.
Thank you for help and again I can't imagine how this awesome game can run so perfectly on my pc with integrated vga

1. Look for NPCs with a "!" on top of their head.
3. Secondary should support your Primary class. Is changeable later on in the game.
4. Can redistribute anytime you want. Max is 200 attribute points (170 and +30 from 2 quest).
5. No
6. PvE, then PvP

Hi welcome to GW. Here is a site that can help you get to know the game.
www.wiki.guildwars.com
They have lists of quests, mobs, missions, armor, and guides to help you learn.
If you just want to pvp then create a pvp toon. In the toon creation menu it asks what kind of toon PVP or PVE choose PVP and you get a max lev 20 toon with a good set of starter skills. Toon names cannot be shared 1 name for 1 toon. There are several guilds, not just two types, find one that is friendly and into the same stuff as you. If you have only a pvp toon, trying to fit into a pve guild will be next to impossible and vics versa.
Hope you like gw and if you have anymore questions that the wiki cant answer give me a pm *grin*

No you don't have to make a new character for every expansion.
If you got the games separately, make sure you add all the access keys to one account, and don't create new accounts with each key.
Once all games are on one account, you will be able to go to any game (from Prophecies to Nightfall for instance).
You can create PvE and/or PvP characters. PvE characters can do PvP too, but PvP characters are lvl 20 from the start, and have access to easy armor and weapon setups.
You cannot make any character have the same name as any other character in the game.
6. Guild. I saw there are 2 types of guilds. PvP and PvE. This made me ... I don't know ... So wich 1 I shall enter ...? Again my playing style is to finish all the expansions and then just pvp and maybe farm bosses, dungeons(or something like that) and make a godly set.
Personally, I play both PvP and PvE actively. I am in a PvP guild.
Just because you're in a PvP guild doesn't mean you cannot play PvE. You play whatever you feel like. If you don't like the guild you joined, you can always leave and join another one
Hope this helps
It's Wintersday festival in the game right now, Lion's Arch is decorated, if you can make it there with your trial.

Welcome, welcome, welcome!
Try not to worry too much, there really are not many things (outside of the Survivor title, Legendary Defender of Ascalon-title AND choosing your primary class) where you don't have a chance to go back and re-do something if you don't like it later. (For info on the Survivor, Legendary defender titles hit up wiki. Whereas once you advance further through the story you will be able to change your secondary class, BUT the only way to "change" your primary class is to make a new character!)
You can play the game any way you want! The whole reason why you want to unlock secondary skills in quests is because they are free. You do NOT need to use them! Which means you can play the ranger any way you want!
Investing attribute points into the available lines makes the skills connected to that line stronger. Whenever you enter a town you can ALWAYS change the attribute points allocation, so you don't have to worry about investing into a worthless line! Try investing points and see what happens and if you don't like the result, switch the points around when you reach the next city!
The reason why you want to make a special character for PvP is the simple fact that all PvP characters come with certain skills and equipment unlocked. That way you have can save a bit of money because you do not need to buy special equipment just for that one PvP match. Also keep in mind that each skill/modification you unlock in PvE is unlocked for ALL PvP characters while it is ONLY unlocked for that PvE character you unlocked it for.
The names in GW have to be unique. Which means the name you used for your character is a name NO ONE (not even you) will be EVER able to use again AS LONG as that character is alive. (For instance, if you name your character Fishy Longsticks, that name will be unavailable to EVERYONE as long as Fishy is alive!)
Hope you have!

1.) If you're looking for people with quests, you'll have to run all over town and seek out people who have the little green exclamation point over their heads. If you have a quest and you're looking for where to go, there should be a green star on your map (press M) that will show you where to go next.
2.) Yup dyes are very nice, and some of them are worth a pretty good lot. If you ever get a black or white dye drop, go to the dye trader to see how much they're worth. Note that if you go to a regular merchant, they're just going to say it's worth 1 gold...so go to the dye merchant for the true price.
3.) As far as secondary goes, you don't NEED to use any secondary skills...they're just there to give your build more flavor and variety into your build. But once again, you don't absolutely NEED to use any secondary skills.
4.) Go ahead and distribute those attribute points to wherever you want. Guild Wars is nice in that it's not like Diablo II and you can distribute and then redistribute the points whenever you want.
5.) You can use the same character for every campaign, and you can also use a PvE character to play PvP, but just know that in some cases if your PvE character doesn't have the ideal equipment, simply creating a PvP character may better suit your PvP purposes.
6.) There are guilds that call themselves "PvP" or "PvE" but you can join either and still play whatever you want. Just know that if you join a PvP guild, you may not get very much help (or sympathy) in your PvE problems, and vice versa.
Hope you enjoy Guild Wars! It's a pretty forgiving game, so don't worry too much and just have fun .

Most guilds simply use PvP or PvE to describe the main activity of their guild. In a previous PvP/GvG guild I was in we couldn't get any guests to replace a sick sore member so we went and did some PvE instead of PvP/GvG.
I have also heard of many PvE guilds doing forms of PvP, albeit they usually don't play top level competetive stuff, but I doubt you would be ready for that yet anyway.

welcome. most has been said above.
Do not sell white or black dye. especially not for 1g at the merchant ;-)
You can get the "entire game" relatively cheap nowadays. Its worth getting all campaigns in one go. Later on your character can move between the campaigns
Try the following keys:
H
I
L
M
P (works different in towns and explorable areas)

Well dam This is the first time I've met a new player n the Guild Wars scene in a long time. First of, WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME!!! Guild Wars was a good choice to get.
ok a few tips, for quests usually the person that gives them has a huge, green, exclamation point over their head.
hahaha yes dyes are nice and glad to hear about your pink bow . The more expensive ones like white, and black dyes are worth quite a bit nowadays. Go to a dye trader to find the true price, or you can save them for yourself if you like.
Attribute points, Ahhh yes the all important attribute points. Since you said you are a ranger then I would suggest putting 9 into wilderness survival, 9 into expertise, and 12 into marksmanship as a starter build.
Secondary professions: Some builds require secondary professions for the build to work properly but most don't. So for now don't worry about it and pick whatever secondary you want. After all it can be changed later in the game via the profession changer NPC in Great Temple Of Balthazar.
Guilds: Guilds are like a family. Find one that you think you will like and join, ask them for help, don't be shy, talk to them. Genuinely most people in guilds are nice and friendly people. If you don't like a guild then you may leave it, but say there is someone in that guild that you really liked. If you like you can add them to your friends lsit by either going to the menu tab at the bottom of your Guild Wars window and finding Friend's List or by pressing the N key to get there. Just thought I'd throw this out there my guild is recruiting people so........Anyways.
The Guild Wars community is glad to see a friendly new face in the game. Who knows you may eve grow to be a great player. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to message me in game Meet Your Doomxx

yeah like mentioned the wiki has alot of information if you need questions answered.. you'll turn into one kind of player or other in gw.. don't turn into this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbrQRr-BMPo
this game can get pretty deep with the way skills from different classes interact with each other.. you can try to wrap your head around it by studying the list of skills- if your set on making on main character and that's it.. you'll be pretty limited on what you can do in the endgame
this game, hard to describe, it's pretty awesome- but only what you put into it.. if you can dream it up, even if noone else is doing it, you can probably do it.. pretty satisfying.. not everyone in gw has an iq over 80.. I'll leave it at that!

B. Don't worry too much about what you chose. Later in the game you can change to any secondary freely any time you are in town.
C. Eventually, Warrior and Ritualist are the strongest secondaries for a ranger. For the start, maybe Monk?

There are only 2 things that are permanent, and most people consider them unimportant:
- Accepting Sir Tydus' request to enter the Academy will move you forward in time several years and into the game proper. You cannot go back. There's nothing in the starter time period that most people regret missing. However, a few people like making perma-pre" characters to remain in that idyllic setting forever.
- Dying for the first time stops your progress towards the Survivor Title. There's no reward for getting this title. You'll only miss it if you specifically wanted it or if you were seeking the title for maxing 30 titles and have to replace it with a more annoying one.

Hi welcome to the game, you'll find plenty to enjoy when you leave pre searing into the main area of the game
Take no notice of the veteran v wannabe veteran v hardcore v part timer v pve v pvp fighting that goes off here, yeh theres plenty, ah well you get it in any mmo but really it just shows how passionate people are about the game.
As for your Ranger it really does not matter which secondary you take, you'll find in the early stages of the game a ranger does pretty well as a pure ranger and will allow you to concentrate on unlocking skills for your primary profession which is a good thing. You wanna do all those secondry quests, when your done you'll be asked to choose one to allow you to progress with your primary quest. I'd suggest you go Monk if only for some hard res. As you progress the game you'll unlock all secondary professions and be able to switch between them at will without any loss of skills or anything and those skills you learnt from those quest will be there for you already. Be careful choosing your skills when you purchase them from the skill trader, they're cheap as chips to start with but with each skill you buy the cost of the next one goes up until the price caps at 1k, so stick with the ones you want to try out to start with. You'll be saving your money for your first set of max armour to start with so don't go wasting it on any old rubbish just yet.
Considering the system your using i would suggest checking this thread out
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/b...t10037429.html
Its an old thread but still relevant, more so with a system like yours and defo if your thinking of purchasing the rest of the campaigns. It'll take hours first time round so you might wanna leave it running while you go to bed, after that it'll be pretty quick and you wanna be repeating after major updates for sure. If you stick around without doubt you'll be saving to upgrade gfx and ram lol, do that and it'll probably look like a completely different game
btw, you can quickly find your way to wiki ingame by either pressing F10 or typing /wiki

1. As said just look for the explanation point. To follow the main quest you typically won't have to look for it, just follow the quest line and do missions!
2. Dyes are nice drops =P
3. IMO for a ranger especially a beginner I'd just pick ranger/elementalist. Keeping it simple using a fire bowstring+ Conjure flame can add some decent damage onto your shots and is easy to maintain the enchantment. Also firestorm is a great AoE spell for PVE especially for a beginner.
4. Any time you are in town you can change them, so use them all soon as you get them, if you want to change them just hit "k" and change them.
5. As per expansions playing them in order doesn't really do you any good as their all seperate. And Factions and Nightfall are actually different campaigns. Eye of the North is the only expansion. I would recommend Factions for the two character classes (assassin and ritualist) rock IMO. And EOTN for all the endgame/higher level content you could ever need! Well maybe not bue you get the point.
6. Look for a guild, a helping guild that is PVE. You can likely get more help from them faster than using guru.
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
Could likely awnser 90% of your questions too! So save that to your favorites.

Sure, it's fine for the stuff this guy will be doing at first, but it's an extremely bad habit to make.
Also firestorm is a horrible, horrible spell, even for an elemental spell, even for a beginner, and you should feel guilty for telling him it's great.
*Elemental damage is shit in hard mode because of high enemy armour.

If you do it all yourself you will find the game much more rewarding, and most of all have fun! I remember when i first got guild wars it was an awesome experience coming from mostly FPS games like unreal tournament and quake and im still here so it still cant be all that bad...

In pretty much every town you go to, you will probably see lots of people offering "runs" - either to another town/outpost or through one of the missions. Since you are new to the game, PLEASE DO NOT GET A RUN! Learn the game. Play through the game. Not only will you spoil the experience for yourself, you will miss out on the learning experience from fighting through it manually.
Since you are new to the game, you won't know market prices for any items. If you try to sell anything in town, don't accept the first price someone spams you. It's probably a power-selling undercutter (might even be me!). Ask for a price check in chat before you part with anything you are unsure of.
Above all else, if you get stuck in-game do not be afraid to ask for help. There are always people in-game willing to point you on the right path.
Good luck!

Cybernetic: Yeah I played some other mmos so it won't be a problem, but I will pop-in with some questions from time to time
TideSwayer: Thank you for your tips. I will definetely look for prices before to sell something if I get some nice items.

Elemental damage is a bad habit to get into*. I've lost count of the number of times I've joined a group for HM PvE and some idiot is running a build that relies on elemental damage.

2. Conjures are nonetheless bad because they remove you from participating in MoP/Barbs/Orders, which do far more damage than conjure does.
3. HOWEVER, for a new player, with a limited selection of skills and teammates available, it's not a horrible thing. It's not like OP can just ditch Conjure and suddenly run Barrage+SY! and a AP-MoP necro and Orders necro will magically appear in their party screen to help out. OP, just make sure you understand that conjure is a temporary, just-for-now build choice and it's no crime.
4. Agreed that firestorm is bad pretty much unconditionally.

Firestorm is not a terrible spell for a beginner at all. It's alot better than some of the people sugguesting him to be a monk for crying out loud.

If you're to stupid to get out of a 'habit' later in the game that hampers your character build then you probably shouldn't try to get into PUG's.

So why run those terrible builds at all? Why use elemental damage? Why not just play well from the start?

Welcome to Guild Wars and our community.
It seems most of your questions have already been answered, so I won't belabor them. Though, I think you'll find that most questions you have about the game can answer themselves. It's not very cryptic to its approach in gameplay, and you can't "ruin" your character like you can in other RPGs, which is something I've always loved.
Just one thing that can't be said enough. The wiki is truly a wealth of information on literally anything you need to know about Guild Wars. Keep it close, and never be afraid to ask questions here as well.

Welcome to GuildWars
Here's something I want to point out.
To get great gear, you don't have to be rich, buy golds items, or do real grinding (compared to other MMO's). You do that to get great *looking* gear with the same stats
The "max" 4 plat armor set provides the *same* as the expensive "max" 60 plat armor set. The 60 plat just (usually) looks much better.
Same thing applies to weapons, off-hand items. There collector's that offer plain looking stuff with the same stats in exchange for monster drops vs buying expensive "perfect" gold from players.
Skills are not like other games, the effectiveness depends on the attribute powering them vs other MMO's where "starting" skills suck latter on and you have to keep grinding for more powerful skills.
Even when you hit lvl 20, your still have a lot of skills you can unlocks for a vast number of skill combinations. Also... don't get attached to some specific build that won't work if one skill changes, skills are tweaked all the time
Starting out, you won't have much in the ways of skills, or unlocks, if things start getting too hard, look at your skill bar, take anything out your not really using, and put something in you think you will use.
If you try a profession, and don't like, try something out, you will find what you like and don't like, and play with what you like, not what someone tells you.
Ex - I prefer back row damage / support vs front line melee. I have nothing against front line melee, I just prefer back / middle row play.
I have to agree with Life Style above me, random pick up groups (pugs) can suck, but find a good guild, or build up a good social network of friends you can play with makes the game very enjoyable. Pugs is where you can meet cool player, make a connection, put them on friends list and build a good social network of friends.
Don't feel tied to a guild, if the guild your in doesn't make a good fit for you find another one.
Also GwGuru culture can be incredibly negative at times.
PVE / PVP
There is PvE (Missions, Quests, etc)
PVP I falls in to two groups.
Competive PVP and Casual PvP
The competive is the one's on the battle isle's, codex, hall of hero's. This is where you have to have a bit of "think" skin. It's harsh learning with some people, or they flat out won't give you the time of day for being a so called 'noob'. If you keep at you will get the experience and can be seriously competing in no time.
Casual PvP is more, group up, have fun, such as Alliance Battles, and Fort Jade/Aspen in factions, and possibly... Random Arena. Some groups do care about skill builds / synergy but a lot of times as long as you have a functional build... your perfectly fine. Fort Jade/Aspen especially... you "enter" battle and your randomly placed in a group
Guild Vs Guild battles - serious / non serious... depends with the guild your a member of. Some guilds are very serious, other's done't eve GvG.
Whew.... didn't mean to make such a long post

Skyy High
Most of this has been said already, but hey, the post's written so I may as well post it.
No, but generally they're pretty easy to spot. The primary quest line should never really be broken; every quest you turn in should be followed immediately by a new primary quest, or a mission (you'll find out what those are later, but the first one is "The Great Northern Wall". You'll find yourself in an outpost with that name, and there will be a button in your party window labeled "Enter Mission", but all that doesn't come for a while).
They're called dyes, but whatever. Save any black or white ones you find and sell them later as they're quite pricey, eventually you'll get to a point where you can find a dye trader npc that'll tell you what every dye is worth. Try to buy and sell dyes (or materials, or anything else with a trader npc) between the buy and sell prices of the trader.
Don't stress so much about it. Your secondary isn't really a big deal most of the time (though there are some builds where you have more secondary skills than primary). Rangers can often get away with running no secondary skills at all, and that's often a good thing because spellcasting on three energy pips is tough. When in doubt, monk is a good secondary pick, because you get access to a hard res. By "hard res" I mean a re-usable resurrection spell (like Resurrect or Rebirth). Most classes don't get access to these spells, and can only use Resurrection Signet, which can only be used once until you need to "recharge" it by entering an outpost (or killing a boss/getting a morale boost).
Furthermore, you'll eventually get the ability to change your secondary to any profession in the game, at any time.
Again, don't stress. GW isn't big on life-or-death, omgIJustMessedUpMyBuildINeedToReroll decisions. Att points can be rearranged at any time, as long as you're in an outpost, so feel free to experiment. Furthermore, att points aren't what you use to get skills, you use skill points for that. You can check how many skill points you have in the top right corner of your hero panel (press H). You get skill points every time you gain a level, and also for certain quests, and also by completing missions later. For now, focus on marksmanship, expertise, and wilderness survival; beast mastery is cute if you want a pet but it's not really all that effective unless you focus entirely on your pet, and it's best to generally stick to 2-3 atts, with maybe a splash for a 4th once you get to a higher level with lots of points to spend.
You can take any roleplaying character into any new chapter you buy. You can also make new characters (you get 2 new slots for adding Factions or Nightfall to your account). You can also take your PvE char into any PvP area, but it's generally advised to make a PvP char to PvP with until you get your PvE char really tricked out, as PvP chars start at max level with all the upgrades and skills you've unlocked on your account, for free. A PvP char will pretty much always be more powerful than any PvE char you can make, and the exceptions you won't have to worry about for a long time.
Guilds aren't just PvP or PvE, though some are. It's really up to the guild members themselves, what they want to do. Read some guild recruitment spam, ask questions of the officers (what do they like to do, are they new player friendly, are they primarily PvE or PvP or both, when do they like to play, etc), and join a guild that you think fits your needs. You can always switch, though I'd give any guild at least a week before leaving.

Furthermore, you'll eventually get the ability to change your secondary to any profession in the game, at any time.

I really need some info here google won't help =( |

6. Guild. I saw there are 2 types of guilds. PvP and PvE. This made me ... I don't know ... So wich 1 I shall enter ...? Again my playing style is to finish all the expansions and then just pvp and maybe farm bosses, dungeons(or something like that) and make a godly set. |
