Is it worth it?

Hello guys, newcomer here.
It's pretty simple, I was wondering if it's ok to get the game for 2010 and keep playing it until Guild Wars 2 comes out.
One of my friends is visiting USA, and I could easily ask him to buy the Trilogy+EoN packs for me (he's returning on March).
I WAS going to start this game back in 2007 but suddenly the WoW hype got me, tried the damn game and hated it (same happened with my Lineage2 experience, it all comes down to GEAR). Casual gamer here.
Thanks a lot for the advice

Of course. There's plenty of content for you to enjoy until Guild Wars 2 comes out.
You could give the trial a whirl if you're not convinced yet.

Most definitely get it! Guild Wars is one of the best games I've played in my whole life - and that says a lot, because I've played many games.
Of course it has its flaws, but so does every game. It takes you a lot of experience before you start noticing any problems.
There is so much content to do, good luck doing it all before GW2 comes out.

Can't confidently say it'll be worfth it for you, as gw is a niche market. On the other hand, if you don't like gear centered gameplay you're headed in the right direction.

GET IT! no question... you'll enjoy it a lot. Since there's more than a year til GW2, u can easily fill HoM and stuff
Cheers!
Cheers!

don't bother no one plays it anymore due to A-nets poor job of screwing up the skills, it's like down to 1 district. So when you go to do a quest you will never find real players to do the quest's with you. The events are horrible instead of giving you something cool like a cool weapon you will get like a worthless sparkler or cup cake YaY !

Slap the nacho! It is shallow and inconsiderate towards virtual cupcakes!

Try the trial as posted by Neo Nugget. It is limited to an extent (no trading, etc.) to foil gold sellers, but will give you a feel for the game. Guild Wars is almost the complete opposite of other online games. Your level is maxed at 20 and once you obtain max weapons (through drops, crafting or collectors) and reach a place to buy max armor, you will never get better of either. After that max damage weapon and max protection armor is obtained everything else is vanity skins.
There are no uber weapons or armor. The focus is on learning to use your skills efficiently and to synergize your skill bar with the rest of your group (whether real players, heroes or henchmen).
Once you begin the game for real, join a guild (you can switch if you don't like one), and don't be afraid to ask for help in-game and here. You will get some jerks and doomsayers, but there are a lot of people who will help.

I would most deffinatly get this game. I've been playing games since i was 7 and i havent found any game on Ps2, Gamecube or 360 that can be even remotly compared to this game.
I am a fairly new PC gamer but ive got to tell you for not paying per month it has to be one of the best PC games out there. They are alot of the time adding new content (newly added dhuum to Underworld, costumes, etc.). Even if this content is used to nerf stuff, its still a great way to get new guys in.
So i would tell you most certainly get it. AS someoen already said its going to be at least another year till GW2 so it still has alot of kick to it. And like someone said it has flaws but you have to be preety "leet" to notice the stuff wrong with it. I've been a GW addict for a year and have only had them shut me down money wise twice. So, if you do decide to get the game im sure you'll get lots of friends and have just a ton of fun. So gl and hopefully ill see you in game and un-hacked.

Back on topic: Try the trial, that's what it's there for. Even if your still not sure after the trial it's hard to go wrong (unless your on a tight budget) with how cheap GW is.

Just out of curiousity; where are you living that prevents you from purchasing GW?

Sadly, the game isn't spread here.

Sorry for the double post, I have a very important question.
How are the 3 campaigns + EoN connected? I've been playing my trial account with a PvE character in the Prophecies campaing, would things vary if I go to Factions?
I'm quite confused as how this game works

There are three chapters, Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall. These are full games in themselves, and each has its own starting area.
Eye of the North is an expansion, the capstone of the series. Eye of the North does not have a starting area and you need a leveled character to enter.
My personal recommendation for a casual gamer would be to do Nightfall first. You will get a complete set of heroes by the time you finish Nightfall. Once you get up near level 20 you can go over to Factions or Prophecies and play there with your Nightfall character, or you can start characters there as well. Indeed, you will want to go to Prophecies fairly early on from Nightfall to do the quest for Olias who is a Necromancer, very valuable hero.
Know what you mean about WoW. I've played it off and on since release, as I have GW. GW has the staying power for me; even now there is so much I have not done in GW.

You can take that same PvE Proph character to Factions AND Nightfall. It's a whole different game from there! New skills, armor, and missions. EoTN lets you explore more into the Shiverpeaks, Asuran, and Norn areas. It also gives you dungeons.

When I started playing my trial account, there was a HUGE download thing to enter a city. Investigated a bit, and tried the -image trick, but were are A LOT of files to download, I mean ... MORE THAN 100k!!!
I'm still trying to download everything
Is the game like this too if I purchase it? Or does this only happen with the downloadable game?
HawkofStorms
The trial downloads everything (since, you can see people from other campaigns in town, you have to download the textures for Nightfall armor, etc). In fact, if you do the -image trick, you should be good to go as soon as you get the cd-keys for the full version.
Zebideedee
I've heard of the -image thingy and was gonna use when I re-installed GW's on my latest comp. but tbh, the biggest dload of a town/area was like 10 seconds. But to answer your Q. wiriaM once it's dloaded thats it, you can go back to that area and never have to dload anything again (unless A-Net makes changes).
Ps. There will be extra downloads at this time of the year because it's Wintersday (GW's Christmas)

Yeah you can do pretty much everything within the time till GW2,don't worry.

Guildwars is a great game even when there are not so many players around anymore, henchman aren't that bad as they used to be and once you convinced your friend it will be awesome. =)

Def get it, fantastic game.
Even though numbers are dwindiling the great thing is that you dont need to see 50000 people around to enjoy it, find a solid group of 5-10 players and play everything with them.
Best part of the game though is that its relies on skill instead of gear, so you might enjoy it from that aspect.
PS. plenty of time before GW2 as its not gonna released til 2095 anyway
