Anet should take note of Torchlight design!

The Great game designers have long since understood the very basic formula that keeps gamers hooked: if you give it, they will come. By constantly rewarding the players with loot -- scrolls with learnable magic, gold coins, and new weapons, to name a few -- players are consistently made to feel that they're always getting just the right amount of stuff to keep things interesting. Torchlight is an excellent example of just the right balance of distributing both the rarities and the essentials.
This is so true and Torchlight is a very fun and rewarding game each time I play it.

Torchlight is gear based.

Guild Wars tries to be the opposite of that.

The only kind of rewards I could see being handed out more frequently in Guild Wars are skills, and it's already very quick and easy to acquire those.

That game looks like WoW, but with better graphics.

Perhaps give examples of what you'd like changed specifically?

Well Cuilan I'm bored with 15^50 weapons. You'd think after 4 years they could give some kind of weapon upgrade inscription at least for PVE play? I like becoming more powerful and geesh if they can allow some build like SF or 600 Smite why can't we have better upgraded weapons? Same difference it just makes general builds a little more unique and powerful but not overpowered like those two builds.

I don't want to see the base dmg of a weapon changed. After all a weapon should do x amount of dmg period. The change I would love is to the fire/shock etc weapons mods. These should ADD fire/shock (whatever) dmg to the weapon, not change the dmg done BY the weapon. Cold could add a slow down for x amount of time to enemies, well you get the idea. It would definitely make those mods more useful and desired in the game.

I'd even settle for that. Whereas a fire weapon does +3 burning everytime it hits without having to use some elemental skill to get it to work like that. At least for PVE now for PVP I can understand needing balance and control I'm strictly speaking for PVE only.

I'd also love to see HASTE inscriptions that replace +15^50 with 5% increases all the way up to 25% increases with negatives maybe like they did Flail or Frenzy etc.

I agree that GW needs better rewards, but not in the form of über gear.

But for example chests... You buy a lockpick and get 1 item, often a purple even in HM. Chest should have 4-5 drops like an amount of gold + some whites or purples + a gold. Sometimes two golds.

Every so often adding new and cool skins with weapon contests like they did in the past and nice skins came out of it like celestial compass etc.

Make certain armor sets drop as loot, next to the existing ones that you need to craft. You'll often have doubles but it keeps you playing till you have a full set.

Increase the gold rewards from vanquishing etc.

You know, there's more than one way to reward players. And if you reward them with too much loot, loot stops being special. There was a whole page devoted to that problem in the AD&D 2nd Edition DMG, I believe.

The issue with Guild Wars loot is that most of it is ridiculously easy to get, and the loot that isn't has such small drop chances that you're likely to never see the item irrespective of time investment.

Simple idea relative to the elemental hilts:

Icy - Reduce target's movement speed by 15% for 2 seconds
Firey - Inflicts burning for 2 seconds
Lightning - 5% additional armor penetration (don't wanna completely destroy sundering, do we?)
Ebon - +1 AL per attack capped at +5 AL

Not at all overpowered but has a bit more usability that just running W/E with a bunch of conjures.

Regardless, the devs from D2 made Torchlight and D2 was always, always, ALWAYS gear-based. That's why the two are so similar and contain that award winning cocaine/videogame addictive formula.

The ability to mod? Sounds interesting. May be should try it sometime when the holiday starts since they have a Demo.
(The system requirements also look reasonably low enough.)

Back to topic about rewarding players with loot, if the Guild Wars "greens" and "gold weapons/offhands" can simply drop more frequently in a "normal" 8-man setup (ie. don't need to force ourselves to solo-farm in order to be able to even get anything) then that would be a good start.

I tell you what. Prior to GW I was a big time Elderscrolls III: Morrowind fan. Talk about wide open game play (Surprised I never could tear myself away from GW for Oblivion). On top of the hours upon hours of base gameplay. They had a modding community like you would not believe. Quests, skins, to full on remakes of the whole .exe, I mean it could take literally hours just to peruse the mods. Then again, being single person play meant you could GWAMM all you want.

I don't know how much modding can be carried over to an MMO outside of visual enhancements and utility programs though.

That's it!!!! Instead of microtransactions. ANET should sell a mod program that lets players look how they want to look. Armor, Weapons, etc.. Then again, it would be a matter of seconds before we were inundated with naked females walking around spamadan wielding dildo swords, lol.

Scratch that idea, lol.

Seriously though. If ANET were to borrow a little here and there from the various other games, maybe they can fix some of the things players are clamoring for.

GW2 looks to be somewhat more gear based, because lack of level/gear grind is a major complaint from people that don't stick with the series. Mucking up GW1 at this point isn't a good idea, but they know how to appeal to a wider audience going forward.

No. Elemental Hilts already have their uses. Icy/Fire/Lightning for conjure on cripslash, ws dervs or sins, and ebon hilts against wars/paragons. They're not so great in PvE, but PvE is already easy enough.

Halo is one of the most successful games of all time, it has guns in it, perhaps A-Net should take note of this and let us have guns. It also has aliens, we should get those to fight aswell.

A game is a game, you have to take it for what it is and not go "OMG x game should be more like y game". Nobody is going to release the perfect game with everthing YOU want.

It isn't a question of easy/hard, it's about making the mods meaningful. As it stands now, a lot of the weapon mods are like the costumes that were just added.

I meant to point out how all mods do have their own purpose, with the exception of the 2 PvE mods.

I've always felt that GW PvE lacks any substantial reward to keep me hooked. It seems like every time I get to level 20, get a good build, gear, ect, there's just no motivation to play the actual game.

I do hope that GW2's PvE is more rewarding. There's too much of a focus on cosmetics in GW, and while that's fun for some people, it's not a good thing to base PvE rewards off of.

That's because you're supposed to move on to PvP. PvE is meant to teach you the game mechanics.

World of Warcraft is that a way for the gear freaks --->

I play Guild Wars not because it's free to play, although it helps.
Guild Wars is successful because it refused to be like every other clone of Everquest and World of Warcraft. (Although it was being made at the same time as WoW just released a year after.)
What keeps me coming back is playing with other people and just having fun, sure getting a rare item can be great but, that's just a bonus.
Having all the top tier items be the same and only the look of the item being different was pure genius. It allows new people to the game be able to quickly join up in elite areas or do the pvp thing.

Running around for months on end to level up, just so than I can do the end game Raids/Dungeons so I can get that new armor, just so I can pvp. Than I'll need to repeat the whole thing over again in the next patch is not fun. It's redundant suicidal megalomaniac behavior.

I do like that you tried to give an idea but, it would be better if you gave ideas in more detail on guildwars2guru.com. While a team of over 100 are carving out GW2 still.
The original poster just gave a quote that describes what the loot system is like in GW now but, I think he was saying that he doesn't like the random natural of the code. Having weapon upgrades or anything in GW getting more and more powerful creates a small hill that just gets bigger and bigger until GW isn't a challenge anymore.
World of Warcraft is at the point were you do 5,000-20,000 damage a hit were in the start of the game in 2004 people only did damage in the hundreds. Those old areas you used to like to raid in becomes irrelevant.

If you like torchlight design. Play WoW.

If you're playing GW because you can't afford the monthly sub. to WoW, then please suffer in silence.

GW is feature complete, there's no way they're adding extra tiers of gear or whatnot. The Live team simply doesn't have the resources.

Torchlight is awesome, well worth its price, has a strong community, but I fail to see the point with guild wars...
Maybe because a mmo based on torchlight will come out in a few years?...ok but for now this is only a single player game (and a really good one), so there's no need for balancing things (in torchlight you could have über gear, better than the uniques you might drop, by constantly enchanting your weapons in town. It has been fixed by a patch but you can see that there's no need to balance things in these kind of games).

PvP in GW is what makes it stand out and so awesome, but everything that makes PvP so great (level cap, skill based, equal gear) makes the PvE quite boring.
What they should do is add some grinding (be it leveling or looting) to PvE without screwing up PvP... oh wait, that's exactly what they plan to do in GW2! By increasing level cap, making more gear for us to aqquire and then bringing all players to the same level of power when they enter PvP, why not just wait and see how it turns out?

Also, I don't think that's the case. At least it isn't to the vast, VAST majority who play PvE, and I certainly hope that's not the view Anet has on PvE.

GW was originally designed as a ground up PvP game, the PvE was usually a tutorial for the PvP. But now its just a game for farmers.

So is playing with the same STAT gear over an over for 4 years in the SAME dungeons and areas. The difference in gear based is there is always something to go after. In Guild Wars there is a cap and it's a quick cap on everything. Level 20, +15^50, +30hp +20% this or that period no increases no value to go hunting for anything but cosmetics.

I don't mind replaying a dungeon if that dungeon is going to possibly yield something greater than I already have. Guild Wars areas do not do that. The same bosses drop the same items in the same places daily, weekly, monthly, yearly in GW's....boring.

Quote:

Even as just a game for farmers what are they farming for? Everyone has the same stats gear so there's nothing of value but silly mini pets and then once you get the coins what are they going to buy with it? What's the purpose of wealth if there is nothing worth buying? I have max level, max armor, max weapons, max runes what else do I need? Nothing.

Even normal life is setup upon GAINS and INCREASING value and wealth. Without new goals and new things to want and have we would be bored and probably die an early age. Life has always been built around GROWTH.

Torchlight has guns too I've found. Man this game is awesome fun. Finally some decent loot and a game worth playing. It is a lot like Diablo though, but, your pet can carry gear for you and take it back to town and sell it for you that's new. I do miss my necro class but the mage appears to be a bit of it all as he can summon imps and golems as he builds up SKILLS.

Queenofdeath I like how you quoted one sentence of mine than made statements, that I addressed in the same post that counter act your logic.
I get the feeling that you didn't understand what I was trying to say.

Megalomaniac:
A psychopathological condition characterized by delusional fantasies of wealth, power, or omnipotence. An obsession with grandiose or extravagant things or actions.

This kind of behavior caters to the WoW/Everquest type of gamers out there. We GW players like that we don't have to get the greatest and most bad ass items, but they are there if one day we choose to go for them.

Again if weapons and armor get more powerful, enemies will have to be buffed to keep GW challenging and what's the point if everything just balances it self out. So instead of doing 20 damage with your old sword you now do 50 with your new one. but, Anet buffed those red dots health from 100hp to 300hp to counter act the new weapons.
Which than PvE weapons/armor could be taken into PvP breaking the balance of a whole other separate section of the game.
Why would Anet want to create chaos and break the game with more and more powerful armor and weapons or any other items your talking about. We already had and have this problem with skills.

Sadly I think Queenofdeath you are missing the whole point of what GW as a game is about. It's about skins, it's about getting that mini pet, it's about getting skins that you think are cool and maxing out titles. Strategizing, coming up with new builds, having fun with friends/guild mates.
I my self would like noting more than to have Anet surprise us with the long lost campaign of "Utopia" and get some major new content released.
But, looking for new a shiny sword that does more damage to give you an advantage to keep you from getting bored... your playing the wrong game.

I look forward to reading any counter points.

Look lot of us enjoy that Guild Wars is not a strongly loot based game. I am still playing Guild Wars 5 years after I bought it, I am not still going to be playing Torchlight 5 years from now (and I doubt you will either, despite the fact that Torchlight has a level editor whereas GW does not).

If you really need to have something to work for in Guild Wars, there are always titles. [I really wish titles did not have in-game powers associated with them though.]

Guild Wars to me is a game I can play for an hour or two a day and have fun and not be at a disadvantage compared to players who have farmed more -- It seems like you want a game that you can play for 10hrs a day for months on end. What you don't seem to realize is that the latter game doesn't actually offer anything more, it just takes longer. I've got a job and hobbies other than playing videogames -- I don't want or need to dedicate that much of my life to virtual accomplishments.
