GWLP: Revived?

As some of you may know GWLP was a little project back in 2007.

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/a...tml?t=10205152

Gaile's Stance was as followed:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...9&postcount=55
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...1&postcount=60

Sadly:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...&postcount=229
The project seemed to have died....

Until this was found on google....
http://gwlpr.sourceforge.net/

Nov 2009 and nothing spectacular has happened yet it seems (seeing as GWLP 1 has evidence of a server actually RUNNING locally on a PC)

Another lost cause? or something that might actually BE revived?

Discuss.

I would love it to be back

I remember I followed that project for the longest time. It would be cool to have old skills and have old gvgs. *shakes with nostalgia*

I think it would be amazing if this came back
I remember reading about it ages ago and always wondered what happened to it

It never died per se, they just went into hiding. At least that's what I was told.

For 2 years? I'm pretty sure in that '07 thread, they said a dev left or something so they just dropped the project.

I'm not a specialist on MMO servers, but I don't think we will ever have a functioning arenanet-like server. Based on SWGemu, game clients already have the bread and butter: graphics (textures, polys, icons...) but the server is what holds spawn/skill/quest..etc...functionality which would be one hell of a project to rebuild the game server from scratch spawn by spawn, skill by skill, quest by quest.

Still looking forward to a stable/solid server core to at least to screw around with.

Oh..but if one is released, with lots of free time, imagination and hours of coding (make that YEARS of coding)...the possibility to build your own storyline is very very true, even a rebuild of the original.

Didn't it die when people started to suggest virus's?

Mainly all bs, but the crowd is fickle.

There's a little more here: http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/User...ousHunter/GWLP

Doesn't look like it's going anywhere fast though.

Would be cool to have GW emulation at the level of WoW emulation; we're lightyears away from that though.

I never noticed that. Pretty cool, I'll have to keep an eye on that there. Thanks.

Yeah those WoW databases are insane. I've seen one once.

So basically it should be possible to have a 7 heroes mod if this LAN version would ever see the light?

It's actually a shame there never was a LAN version, because it could have meant PvP tournaments at LAN parties with prices and all and no lags.

Last commit was month ago. There is no discussion going on or any updates. I think it is safe to say whoever started this project is under (correct?) impression that no-one is interested.

Even if you solve showstopers (that it, get client talk to server), you still have to code server mechanism and game mechanics.

All of game mechanics. Mobs, spawns & Ai. Instancing.

I am doing this myself for unrelated project and it is not easy, and i can totally see how someone would think he can handle it only to discover that, well, it is hard and once you get pard hard stoff there is also a lot of hard work.

Yes, but do not hold your breath. Someone would have to replicate all of the game and to make modifications to client. While modifying client is not anything hard and could be just copy-paste fest, it is pretty much out of question when you do not have source code avaiable.

It is easier to write new single player game from scratch.

I'm a total noob at this LAN-stuff, don't even know what LAN means.

Should I expect something like this: ?

I'd personally love it if this came to fruition, and even considered throwing in with them, but then I got to thinking... I can't help but feeling they're being set up for failure with an impossible bar. The requirements from Gaile say it has to authenticate against Anet's auth servers or risk legal smackdown... but what are the odds, honestly, that Anet is gonna release any of the technical data needed to talk (or even allow the clients access) to those servers?

If the devs for this project can stick to it for completion, than yes, we could see a revival. Though they have a long period of time to make up from their first project. If they can pull it off within a year, kudos. Otherwise this can be a lost cause if it would only finish close to GW2's release. At that point this project wouldn't amount to anything for a game that will be empty of most of it's players. (Assuming that many will abandon GW1 for GW2 and if maybe GW2 would be release around the projects finish, if the project does take that long to complete.)

I wouldn't expect any progress from it. Looks like only one guy is updating it and I don't recognize the name. I'll ask one of the original members of the project what's going on if they ever log onto IRC.

LAN means "Local Area Network" which ranges from your single pc, or a few pc's hooked up to your (usually) wireless router (which is really a smart network switch) all the way up to an office/business network, all "LAN's". LANs being local aren't subject to abuse/change like the internet is, so I look at them as personal mini-Internets, especially when you can pretty much emulate the internet on one anyway with multiplayer games, file servers, even private webservers.

And yes, you can expect something like that if you want to. If this project is (A) actually revived, and (B) anet says it's ok... you can get your hands on a download...you can do what ever the hell you wish from that you see in the video..... to taking hours upon hours to make your own fun storyline in pre (or anywhere else)

I really do hope it turns out well.

Oh and one more thing, despite the "LAN" name, it'll most likely be (by default, unless changed) a localhost server which runs within your PC's TCP/IP stack, but doesn't leave it onto a network, which makes it even more of a private server then before, I'm sure there will also be the ability to change it to full LAN access.

I would love something like this to play around with in my spare time, and see Armor and Weapon combinations before I purchase them in game.

I will do everything I can to support anyone willing to revive this project. I don't really have the knowledge of coding but I'd help in any way I can.

This is great news!
I would love being able to balance skills and screw around with the codes for quests and missions as well as other "numbers" (300 sec shield of absorbtion anyone?)
Although i would not be able to contribute with anything it would be fun. ^^

They did actually have a working authentication system i think wich used a program that required you to start guild wars, log in to your real account on the real server, and then it checked if you where succesfull and which campaigns you were allowed to, and you had a certain session of playing gwlp before you needed to authenticate again.

I'd be down for this. I think these sorts of projects are rarely harmful to the community. If anything, they create a greater interest in the game, and players are more likely to come back.

Indeed. Even a multiplayer game from scratch is easier. GW's network protocol was the show stopper. It wasn't until last fall that a utility existed to split GW's datastreams into the actual packets. Splitting the stream in packets during GWLP's prime was guess and check and thus incredibly time consuming.

If you're referring to GWLP, two of them practically lurk in the original channel on Rizon.

That's not very difficult to do at the character selection screen. The login (auth) server is the easiest to emulate and has the least update changes. I think the original one was working until the in-game makeover stuff arrived. With GWLP having provided a solution to the hard problems regarding the login server, it's odd that none of the "revival" incarnations have yet to get that far.

It worked, but it wasn't effective and by no means secure. Someone released a crack for it within a day or two. Why they didn't just comment out a single line of code and recompile, I'll never understand.

The amount of progress isn't promising and switching to C++ and Qt is just going to slow things down. C# is much easier to develop in.

Unless you sniff the packets to make sure it's authenticating at ANET servers, for all I know, your keys can be transmitted to ANET and a private server in CHINA!!!

So what if there is source code available. Most people don't compile the code themself or even know how to do it. The source code made be legit, but the real source code to generate the binary been modify to steal your keys and account info.

Yeah! Lets create a project for some years, how bout a server emulator, put hours, days, weeks..years into it, with no money gain from it to steal some accounts! Anet will never catch on that it was us the whole time!

I know its a big ask but it would be amazing if you could start this up again. I don't know coding, but I could probably donate financially once I get a job to help the project. Would love to just be able to tamper around with my own personal GW.

It's definitely a huge task ahead of them. Some things I can think of right off the top of my head:

-Monster Spawns
-Database of Monsters and Skills and NPCs
-Character Progress (titles, missions, etc)

I would be interested in seeing what could be accomplished by this. Large Scale PvP would be nice.

I believe they are actually still using C# and only about 3-4 people are currently working on this, actively.

Its a PvP only complimation for the 1-3 people that have offered to help on Game Revision (Which i wish wasnt linked, it doesnt exactly have legal things on it if you look around the site). The lead developer thats working on it now said that PvE will not be included, if it is ever finished, and that if you want PvE, go play normal Guild Wars Its basically being designed with the ultimate player specified PvP mode in mind. Skills arnt so hard. NPCS can be created quite simply, from what ive read. Character progress would be simple to trace with only PvP based things running on the server.

Thank you for the clarification, I was unaware (or too lazy to read) about their goals.

A few members from GameRevision (the site that brought us GWCA) have been working on the project but I don't believe there's a ton of active development going on currently.
