Hey everyone, I've never played a game like this, but I just started Guild Wars and I really like it a lot so far. My character is an Elementalist.

Anyway, much of the aspects of the game confuse me - items, purchasing/selling, etc. Are these things that I'll pick up as I play? I just have the Game Of The Year version now.

Thanks!

Welcome to Guild Wars and guru. You need to post a more specific question for help. Meanwhile, the wiki will explain a lot of things. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page

Also visit the Campfire section of guru and read the Basic thread at the top of the Elementalist subforum. This will give you a good deal of info on playing your profession. And have fun.

The wiki link that Darcy posted has a large amount of information on the mechanics of the game and items. Thats a good place to start to look for a lot of answers to questions.

Regarding your general query about items and purchasing/selling things, yes this is something you pick up over time. If you're doing PvE generally you'll want an Identification Kit and an Expert (or Superior) Salvage Kit with you at all times as identifying an item will generally increase its value and allow you to discover good modifications on weapons or armor pieces which you may wish to salvage with the kit. As a general rule for things to sell to merchants and which to keep for players: if the colour of the writing on the item isn't a gold colour and its requirement isn't less than 10 then sell it to the merchant. Your main exceptions are minor and major vigor runes which are useful to keep hold of. There are a LOT of exceptions that I won't cover as it will probably be more confusing than helpful at this time. If you want to get the value of something try searching in the Price Check room on this forum.

Hope that helps a bit and welcome to Guild Wars and Guru

do not sell black dye for 1 g at the merchant its worth at lease a few thousand (K) or Plat (short for platinum, 1 plat = 1 k = 1000 g)

read wiki for common scams

remember to use your skills, hahaha, when I first started my necromancer uses an axe and shield.

game of the year has /bonus which you type in the dialog box (gives you max dmg (damage) weapons) if not mistaken.

and you might want to read this list for short form. common game acronyms use in GW.

white (normal) blue (slightly good) purple (medium) gold (good) green (boss drop)

you want to identify them before selling, as they become more expensive after ID (identify)

There is also a website dedicated to the beginner area (Pre-Searing) for your campaign at http://presearing.com
Make sure to do all the secondary profession quests before choosing a secondary. These supply you with free skills that can be used later in the game when you will be able to swap your secondary for others. Also try to be at least level 7 or 8 before "entering the academy" which will take you to Post-Searing and the start of the "real" game.
