Guild Wars: Classic Mode

Getting bored ?
Starting to find Guild Wars a drag ?
Want a challenge ?
Well, recently I felt the same feelings. Yes, it has been like this for awhile, I understand. But, I discovered a new gameplay that can take your mind's off of whining on GWG about how dead this game is, or how ectos are going in price, and of course, the impending SF-nerf.
If you have the character slot and need a new profession to play try doing this: Playing prophecies. BUT!!! to make it more fun play it as it was before the other games out.
RULES
* You must buy your skills, no tomes, no elite tomes. Nothing.
* Any armor, weapon, etc you want to buy must come from the gold you get from your character.
* Try making it interesting, do not unlock your xunlai storage.
* Any drop you get you can use, as long it didn't come from anything out of Prophecies.
* No leaving prophecies until you complete it!
* You must not be ran to any other outpost/city/or mission. Play it through!
Anyways, in all seriousness, I have been trying this and it has gotten my mind off of whining or trolling. Also, it is quite a challenge, good for those who do enjoy such things. Also, to make it less lonely, try bringing your friend along, just do it to have fun and enjoy Guild Wars.

PvP is fun ? Since when ? Sorry I'm too busy raging at the stagnant meta to bother. Factions and Nightfall is drag. (Not to mention I rather not grind in NF.) I also rather play the game than complain about it on a forum. : >
Zahr Dalsk
Compared to Prophecies, they're all massive fun, full of excitement and happiness.
iTzF3aR
I would like to agree, sir. But unfortunately none of these can scale up to playing like this in prophecies (MAYBE playing Factions, but hell, that gets boring right after the third quest).
Reverend Dr
Self imposed restrictions have been around forever, nothing new, nothing exciting. Emphasis on "nothing exciting."
iTzF3aR
True, but how many players *actually* do it ?
Ariovist Lynxkind
I have to say I had actually thought about doing this
Pistachio
I think this is why pre-searing is so much fun. Most of those restrictions are already in place.
zelgadissan
I'm actually in the process of doing this with a secondary account I happened upon, namely because I'm too lazy to deal with GWx2. I'm taking my time though, I haven't played it very far past pre.
Now if only I could use the skills I used back then.

You should just try making yourself blind and join Paralympic.
I heard it's fun and different.

i actually like prophecies the best of the campaigns.
Shayne Hawke
Play through the campaign that I've played through to the umpteenth time, except this time, I gimp myself!
No thanks.
No thanks.

I did this and found it fun a while back.
Then I went to factions and started to get skills as if I just bought it and played through, Then NF, Then Gwen.
I still skipped the maguma jungle like I did in the past though also. I still hate that place. So beautiful, but the missions are meh.

How about doing something fun instead? Like PvP, Factions, Nightfall, posting on Guru, or indeed, most anything else.

Also, if you're bored with gw and have to resort to playing the most dull, long tedious campaign to have something to do, you should probably just find another game to play.

I'd absolutely love if there was a *separate server* running only Prophecies and would play that instead of normal GW. I'm sure many players who played since the beginning would also like that, including many who quit GW entirely.

If this takes off, having a prophecies only server wouldn't be too far off into fantasy thinking.

Prophecies is great for nostalgia, lousy for actual playing.
We remember "The good old days of Thunderhead Keep being insane, trying to PUG through Hell, getting excited over finding Fireball, that time Rurik bought the farm, the open areas of the desert," etc.
But we forget all the boring bits; the stagnant monsters that are all the same, the endless walking while fighting jungle critters or forest critters or swamp critters all of which have nothing to do with the mission we're fighting, the ridiculous bonus missions that contradict or run completely tangent to the mission, and the mobs of dull enemies composed of 100% the same class, which fail completely.
Which, I suppose, is what makes GW2 so exciting; all the magic of the original campaign, but with the lessons learned from all the years of game design.

I might try that challenge. Sounds challenging.
Buying everything is not so fun.

Im recently doing this with a friend. He has GW since 2005 but he never played it much. He wan't to do ALL quests etc. So that's what we did. We just left pre sear after doing all the quests. And now in old ascalon he also want's to do all the quests.
I'm like argh.. I just want a run to lion arch, get to eotn. complete it.. get overpowered pve skills. get some nice 1337 armour, load up a nice build via pvxwiki and go easymode with sabway trough all campains.. oh wait.. I did that before.. that's not fun at all.
I did buy armour/skills via storage money tho. Maybe il use some tomes.. not sure yet.
fyi, I play this game since 2005, and I'm not planning to do much more in pve. But I play this charakter with him because it's really alot more fun to play together.

Try this without any hench/heroes (ie true solo), that's actually somewhat interesting. I also don't take advantage of account unlocks when buying skills. You should also avoid trader NPCs, as they are basically selling items from other players.

Now if it were possible to still form groups to tackle prophecies (i.e. explorable areas as well as missions) like in those good ol days, then perhaps this would be appealing.
If you could rally together a bunch of guys from your guild to do this with, then sure, why not.
However - groups do not form and people wanting to redo prophecies 'for kicks' are few and far between.
Thus, you'd be required to H/H pretty much the whole campaign....and that would be balls.
(This stems from a personal hatred of H/H - Pugs all the way. Much more 'fun'.)

I would play with PUGs if...
...you bothered to educate yourselves about the game.
...you listened when I gave you a decent build to run.
...you didn't draw random shit on the compass.
...you accepted my class in groups.
...you knew how to play the game half-decently.
...you didn't run shitty builds.
Not to mention some of us like to take breaks.

Yes, my most fond memories are from PUG'ing through Prophecies. The game was magical back then. I usually H/H it if there's no guildies available as it gets the job done faster and more efficient. Still, I hope there's no heroes in GW2 so I'm forced into sometimes annoying, sometimes fun PUGs that at least are always different and fresh. Pro has the best story line, it feels a little dragged out but that's cause everyone wants to just get through it quickly and there's few people who still play it.
Pleikki
Ive been wondering do this for ages but cba buying prophs only acc for this, then it would be way cooler. Do everything without any help of Friends also!
and also
Make it more intresting and you must CAP all normal skills also. So only skill you would be allowed buy is skill capture..
and also

No offence to the many experienced, and indeed many more experienced than me players out there, but it doesn't take more than 3 pugs who bought their copy of GW from a friend, complete with all outposts, uber armor, and obsidian-edged chaos thong in your group before you realise that you-just-can't-tell!
Patrisha MacFarlane
I'm doing this on a necro in Factions, and an Ele on my second account in Proph... Afraid I haven't made much progress on either in the last couple years.
Cool Down
I have just started a new character which i will play through the campaigns in the order they came out, so no hardcore factions, nightfall or eotn skill's to my new character
Falkin
I'm with you . I have made a prophecies elemantalist some time ago, and I am planning to go with these restrictions when I'm done cartographng elona on my main.
If finding groups is absolutly impossible I might go get some heroes, but im hopping I dont have too.
/signed the list of gamer who miss the game the way it were before heroes, before pve skills, before all that soloing the game with h/h

To make rule 1 more similar to what it used to be profecies, besides not allowing tomes of any kind, purchasing skills should be also a little restricted. I mean, now when you go to a skill trader you find all the skills unlocked available for purchase (core + campaign). That would be too easy. Only skills allowed should be the ones that the particular NPC offers originally.
For example, you shouldn't be able to purchase Meteor Shower until you arrive to Kryta (Captain GreyWind has it). Not applying this rule means you could could purchase it on Old Ascalon if you already have it unlocked, meaning you could initially have your uber profecies build ready (except the elite of course).

I've been doing this with an ele with a prophecies only account, so far it's been interesting and at times bollock twistingly annoying. I'm upto Ice Caves of Sorrow right now and managed to get some max armour, still using a poor weapon though.
Also, several runes and insignias weren't available during prophecies.
Survivor, radiant, attunement, vitae and clarity I think.

As I pointed out, H/H have ruined the game (imo) so that people just dont pug anymore. Which is completely understandable - some people want to just fly through the game with their adapted Heroes and be done with it.
More power to you if that's how you want to play the game.
But once you've already completed something (or even on my first attempt), I dont see what's enjoyable about rolling over all mobs with npcs and zooming to the end - H/H aren't exactly the most 'social'. Zzzzz
Also - there is the outside chance you get...you know...a GOOD pug.
Shasgaliel
Did it a few times. It is fun till sanctum or so. Anyway I would rather get new content than play the same content again.

If it weren't for the AI, a lot of us wouldn't play at all.
Ruined the game? To the contrary, Guild Wars would not have survived without it.
bsoltan
Do this and try to get survivor as well, also only get armour from collectors.
I've created the character 3 times now, first two I died in Magumma Jungle. -_-

Sorry, I'll rephrase:
H/H ruined PvE for me...and I'm sure others like me.
Not having to play with a bunch of NPCs is what attracted me to MMORPGs.
Hence, PvP is the way forward.
