2 anti virus programs?
ican the farmer
Hey!
I am wondering if i will be able to run 2 anti virus programs at the same time? amt i use Telia secure surf and im thinking of getting Avira Antivir to fill up my needs on high security
so is this possible or will they detect eachother as viruses?

Im pretty sure you can run two antivirus programs at once,I wouldn't advice doing it though.
There is a chance that they may conflict with eachother and I could think that it would be counter productive.
Say one of the vsr are checking a file and the other one also wants to check that same file, but it finds that the file is "in use" and skips it and the first vsr doesnt catch that its a virus but the second would have, but didnt because it skipped.
So yes im sure you can, but you shouldn't.

ok ty! i am kinda scared of getting another key logger so i was thinking why not better up my odds by getting 2 instead of 1

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a fine tool too.
ican the farmer
ok do u think i can run malwarebytes' anti-malware at the same time as my own Telia secure surf?
shaggie821
Malwarebytes & Telia should b ok 2 run @ the same time ones a virus scan and the other malware/spyware removal. Should b ok 2 run together. I have always used Avast Free Home edition, Malwarebytes, & Spybot Search & Destroy. Malware & Spybot check the same files pretty much so dont run them @ the same time. Not One Key-Logger in my 4+ years of playing GW's. Cross my fingers X.

ok nice i will download Malwares now hope it works! (fingers crossed)

Good Luck keep us posted on results Please & Thank You. We dont want anymore hacked accounts this year. 2010 ANET Resolution---HAHAHA--Good Laugh.

ok downloaded it now and ran both programs but they detected each other as tojans :/ so i removed Malewares but it draged secure surf whith it so i was whith out virus protection for 5 min but now i just got secure surf

I can Guarantee that Malwarebytes is not a trojan. Used it 4 years. Here is legit site 2 d/L from (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) . If you still cant get 2 work you can try a small program called Combofix.exe (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix) goto one of the trusted sources --- *BleepingComputer.com* *ForoSpyware.com* and download and try I do suggest running it in SAFE mode.

i dont think it is an trojan but still creppy 2 be out of protections for couple of mins :P i will try again hope it works (fingers crossed so hard that they nearly broke :P)

There are others who may be more in the know.. but i have never had 2 anti-virus programs run together compatibly (is that a word?) they always conflict and detect eachother as trojans or virus's.
One techi site said the fact that each program detects stores or vaults virus's makes the other flag the competing program.

I run Avast Home, free edition memory resident, and have Malwarebytes anti-malware and manually scan with it. Have had no compatability issues. I also have Iobit Security 360 as an extra "Anti" program. They each have caught issues that the others have missed. I run both Spybot and Spyware Terminator, with Terminator memory resident. Again no compatability issues.

Get avast, which IS a virus scanner.
Malwarebytes is an anti-malware scanner, not an anti-virus.
These two will not conflict with each other.
Never run two antivirus programs (avast and avira, etc) at the same time.

I tried Avast but it didn't pick up on some of the things that Avira AntiVir did. Although the latter has an annoying ad. that pops up every other day*

ok i got F-Secure on the phone today and talked to them about the anti-virus program but they said that there program was so great and nothing could pass it but yet it did it got me a key-logger which led to me getting my Guild Wars account hacked i will try avast as my only anti-virus program now
isildorbiafra
Not advised. To much risk on conflicting issues.
Chasing Squirrels
I use avira and i got rid of the ad popup. Not sure if i am allowed to post links so you can pm me or just google it.

Avast sucks IMO. There's nothing better than playing Wolfenstein: ET and having the popup in the middle of a shootout.
Tarun
Except avast doesn't have popups, Avira on the other hand does.

Maybe they changed it last time I used it. I still remember shouts (in my native language, of course) "THE VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED!" that would cause my games to lag and/or minimize.

You can disable that in the options.
I like Avast. I installed it on my PC and my sisters' and mother's laptops because they're too computer illiterate to do that stuff themselves. It's free, reliable and doesn't hog your CPU, RAM nor HDD.
I think some of the personal-use commercial anti-virus programs are overpriced.

I also run avast, and while I do get the update thing popping up, I have never had it lag out a game, or create any other issue. I personally like the fact that it does update as much as it does, gives me this nice secure feeling that they are actually doing something, rather than just a weekly update (which leaves your computer vulnerable for 6.5 days after it installs).

Again, just disable those short popups that briefly appear in the lower right.
Go to Settings > Update (Basic) and make it all Silent under Details.

While you're here, Tarun - your opinion on Microsoft Security Essentials?
nologic
Microsoft Essentials is ok but the scan is just way to slow but atleast its free but still requires you have a legal version of XP, Vista or Windows 7.
You have to update it manually with new definitions which kinda sucks correct me if im wrong but its the only 2 bad things at the moment.
But its free just those two flaws which might not be the best but there arent much free alternatives.
Edit: Forgot to mention its really easy to understand so good layout so its not hard for a beginner once they installed it.

I use avira free and threatfire. Never had any problems

The best anti-malware and virus detection program is, or rather should, be running in your brain. Don't ever run cracks, hacks, keygenerators and whatmore. Don't just download and run programs when people on forums tell you to, be sceptical and don't trust, check the manufacturer (through reviews and wikis), check that a given link is indeed to that manufactirers site.
Tarun
Very true Amy, however it's sad how many people lack common sense...

Simply using your brain isn't good enough. Even first-party software from reputable vendors can contain viruses (a recent example is Razer), and widely-used software like Adobe Flash/Acrobat and Sun Java regularly exhibit new vulnerabilities. It's true that malware generally targets (and hits) the low-hanging fruit, but you're kidding yourself if you think being a non-moron makes you bulletproof.
One AV vendor that inexplicably never seems to get mentioned is G-Data; they've consistently scored the highest detection rates on AV comparatives. Their software isn't the fastest, most convenient, or least intrusive, but detection rate is the metric that trumps all others when it comes to antivirus.
For the paranoid, even better security options are to run everything inside of sandboxes/VMs, or booting from read-only media.

Things such as Razer, Adobe Acrobat/Flash, Sun Java, etc. are not "first party" they are third party software. These vendors do not distribute viruses. If their software is ever flagged, it's called a False Positive. A good example of such is AVG flagging user32.dll as "PSW.banker4.APSA" which you can read about here.
And using your brain works quite well.
