I personally would start in NF (becuz I think it has the best character designs) and work your way through Istan. Once availible, travel to Kaneing Center and Lions Arch. I would recommend doing Factions first, as it is the easiest of the campaigns to beat. Then move to Prophecies and do missions from D'Allesio Seaboard onward (or get a run to droks and just do the last few missions, not recommended for new players though). Then move on to Nightfall. Mostly because the end of Nightfall has some spoilers for the other 2 end-games if you didn't complete them.

If you are new to the game, not much. Once you get better aquainted with the game and the skills list it will make alot of difference.

Henchmen are a great way to play through the game if there are few-to-none people in the parts of the game you need to complete. And if the money loss seems a bit much, think about how much you would lose if you didn't live long enough to kill the monsters.

I would say eye of the north has the most players. that, or the beginning of NF or proph.

Not a bad idea. You should get a feel for the community and decide how YOU want to play. That will help you make a better guild choice. However, I would sudgest maybe getting guest invites to guilds rather than join and later leave.
