Am I doing the right thing?

I recently purchased Guild Wars Trilogy. I had no idea each game was separate from the other. I thought they all blended with each other. This brings me to my question.
Which out of the three GW should I be playing? I want to prepare for Guild Wars 2. So.. in saying that, should I buy Eye of the North and not play any of the trilogies? I'm asking because I saw this statement on the EotN site
"Your own personalized Hall of Monuments to preserve your achievements, trophies, and titles across all Guild Wars games, allowing descendants to reap the benefits of your character's fame in Guild Wars 2"
Is it pointless to play.. say.. Nightfall?
Which Chapter are most others playing?
Sorry for all the questions. The main question is should I spend more money and get Eye of the North so I can carry my trophies and achievements over to Guild Wars 2 when it comes out?

IMO you should start at least with Prophecies. It's by far the best chapter, best storyline, and the most fun. It also gives you the basic story you need to know. If anything, you should play Prophecies, and then skip to EoTN if you wanted. It really won't take too long to finish any of the chapters though depending on how long you play a week, so you should go in order if possible.

EotN is the only "expansion" of the 4, meaning it doesn't have it's own starting area. Also, EOTN doesn't have many skills to choose from, you'll still need to get reasonably far in a given campaign simply to unlock necessary skills to succeed.
Any char that gets to EOTN will have to be started in a different campaign.
The most worthwhile chapter to play imo is Nightfall. The gear is inscribable and if it's your first playthrough, you'll just be more likely to find better equipment.
Factions is the shortest campaign, might also be a valid option if all you want to do is get to EotN.
Prophecies is... meh. It has the most personality... but not much else that's worthwhile, and I doubt that at this point anyone is really into GW for the story.

Achievements and items that you are able to place in the HoM (Hall of Monuments) are obtained in Eye of the North, but also in the 3 campaigns. Think about titles (completion of all missions), and armor from each campaign.
Also, you won't get any tangible benefit in GW2 from these achievements in GW1. At this time nobody even knows what to expect. Perhaps something flashy, but it's anyones guess.
However, I would advise playing Guild Wars for fun, not in preparation of GW2.

If you plan on playing all campaigns at some point to get the best experience out of Guild Wars, then go chronologically Prophecies->Factions->Nightfall.
If getting your titles and stuff quickly for HoM is more important, Nighfall offers titles and heroes right at the beginning, yet doesn't thrust you into the game like Factions does. EotN (where the HoM is) can be reached from any campaign once you get to a certain point in the campaign, but its story is related to Prophecies and is located on the prophecies continent.

maybe thi will help w/ some of the OP's confusion(i sensed this by his typing lmao). You seem to think that each campaign is a stand alone.. while this is true it doesnt mean you create a character in NF, but u cant now do Eotn Factions or proph. Its just a simple thing as to get to a certain quest- time in the campaign(usually only a few hrs if your fast). so its not that you can only go to lets say factions with a factions character. once that character gets to a certain part in the factions campaign(kaieng center) you can go to other campaigns(though slightly altered to fit being a non-native of that campaign). Hope that helped and welcome to the community

If I were you I would start out in Nightfall then go to prophecies and then onto factions.
In Nightfall, You have access to heroes and allowed up to 3 in your party + other henchmen.

This game will have little bearing on preparing for GW2
Yes you will be able to view your achivements that you had in GW1 but it will not let you have some large advantage over others who just buy GW2 when its released.
The standalone ie Prophecies.is a good starting point to learn about the game and Skills do not cost as with others.
Once you leave Pre-Searing ( training area as such) you enterPost and your journey begins doing quests for skills and Missions to progress through the storyline( At a point namley Lions Arch you can take your char to either Factions or Nightfall......and if u get EOTN you can go there also.
If your char goes to NF once there you obtain heros (lev15) to assist you
If you go to Factions then no heros just Hench
This above is similar to any Campaign you make a char on .So a factions char can cross over to the other 2 at a given point also
Same if you make a char in NF the diff is you obtain heros as you level up from level 1 and they level along with you.
Dont be in a hurry to jump and rush learn the builds and the forums here are a good guide on each Profession.
Most of all Enjoy Guild Wars and play whatever profession you have the most fun with.
As you have Trilogy...in a town type /bonus to obtain some wepons ect,

start in nightfall to get eros to make things easier. after that definitely do prophecies+eotn since it will be the continent of gw2. and still play factins. play all of em for the full experience. u have plenty of time before gw2 comes out. and u have to have one of the three main to play eotn. it is only an expansion

To reinforce what Tobi said, these games DO blend together. Each game is a separate continent. Your characters, once you hit a point in the storyline, can travel from one area to another.

Thank you, all of you, for the above and beyond help. I fully understand now.
I shall start off in Night Fall then perhaps Proph, but my goal is to get EotN as soon as possible.
Thanks again! What a great community this is.

As far as EotN and the HoM goes - the benefits to be gotten from the HoM in GW2 will be only cosmetic. I doubt that it's worth worrying about.

As I said, no campaign is going to make any difference to GW2, so just play what looks good. (Nightfall has Heroes though, so it's a good place to start.)

Well, we don't actually know what the rewards will be, do we? Though I'm sure we won't be getting our old weapons/armour or anything like that.
Anyway, about getting Eye of the North: I'm pretty sure you can get it for cheap these days. Not sure where you live, I guess America?

If you want to carry titles over then i suggest doing Nightfall first. If you want to learn how to play Guild Wars I suggest Prophecies. If you want to be done with one do Factions. Honestly, I would skip the campaigns and just play PvP. Once you get good and unlock a decent amount of skills it can be really enjoyable especially if you have a PvP-orientated guild. By the way, the most prestigious titles are PvP based.

I would play all your campaigns because you did buy them lol. I would start with prophecies. It's the best of the three to begin with. And you are right, they all blend together at a certain point so you can be free to move from campaign to campaign after that certain point.
You also need the trilogies because EOTN is an expansion and not a campaign. Yes I would get it. You spent a good sum on the trilogy. Might as well get the full experience and go for EOTN. Besides, it's probably as cheap as AOL disks now.
