Start off by telling us exactly what PC specification you have at the moment - processor, memory, graphics - and what available slots you have, be it PCI, AGP or (hopefully) PCI-E.
(and maybe some nice person will move this to Tech's Corner)

(When in Doubt, Google it Out)
Assuming your MoBo can support PCI-E, I would recommend anything off of this list:
http://nvidia.co.uk/object/graphics_...uy_now_uk.html
or an ATI Card. The reason for this is that nVidia and ATI cards are guaranteed to have full/latest DirectX support (which you'll need to play GWs).

Start > Run > "dxdiag" (without quotes) for current PC specs. You'll need to open it up to find out if its PCI or PCI-E:

Well, if I were you, I would either wait for the new Nvidia cards, or buy a 5870. Not that expensive, and they are pretty good.

the OP's system is really old. putting in powerful, modern graphic cards like the 5870 is a waste of time. not to mention, he probably can't even put it in, since he's likely to have AGP-era hardware.

I mean, why bother updating PC, if it would be anything worse than E2160 (or ATI equivalent) and a 8xxx GeForce (...again). Otherwise, you would soon want to upgrade again.

my pc says it has an ATI, called a rage 128 pro ultra GL AGP
says its a PCI, bad shit for me eh?

ati rage pro? i've got one too... in a box down in the basement.
yeah, looks like a complete new system is in order for you.

Dxdiag would be a lot better... But yeah. Buy a new motherboard, CPU, GPU and RAM, since DDR2 is cheaper than DDR. Don't buy pre-mades if you have someone to put the PC together. Your power supply might be still viable, although I wouldn't be too optimistic about it.
Also, if your motherboard is really that old, you also might have to change your HDD to a new one.
So yeah, expect to spend a lot if you want to upgrade something.

sounds like you need a brand new system; do you have the ability to assemble one yourself, or do you wish to buy one that is ready to go out of the box? Also, other than Guild Wars, what games and programs will you use on your new computer?

Just buy a Radeon HD 3850agp and save yourself $930

Who knows, I don't think the OP has ever given us his actual system specs.
subpwn, what kind of PC do you have? HP, Dell, IBM? Also what's the model #?
I'm running a:
Radeon HD 3850
P4 3.2ghz HT
2 gigs of RAM
2 IDE HD's
eSATA storge drive on a standard Dell GX270 power supply.
This site will help us determine if his PSU has the juice.

According to the site, when I plug in all the devices I'm using... it's recommended that I have a 257W PS.

If you're going to be getting a new PC and use it mostly for gaming or graphics programs, I'd suggest going to a custom PC shop of some sort and talking to someone about building you a computer, rather than ordering one off the line. This will probably cost more, but at least you'll know you're getting exactly what you want, and it's a good investment.
Or, if you do a little research or have a friend who can help you choose your parts, newegg.com and tigerdirect.ca are great sites for buying computer parts, and they have pretty decent prices.
