To purchase through the in game store you need a credit card. Without one of your own, you may have access to a 'gift card' Visa/Mastercard which can work. If you have the trial account already started, all you are doing is adding an access key for the game(s) to that account. Retail stores typically sell the game cheaper than the in game store, and a few websites like NewEgg will as well.

I assume you are playing the Trial that you downloaded from guildwars.com website. To upgrade to a full version you need to purchase one of the games. You DO NOT need to purchase from ArenaNet or NCSoft where, yes, the prices are high.

You can purchase the retail box version from any online seller (please don't do E-Bay as you might end up with a used game which cannot be re-used). Then you take the activation code and add it to your account through the function below your password on the login screen.

QFT

Go to a game store and buy the game in a sealed box.
Never touch used versions you would be chucking your money away.

Not really compared to what they used to be and the no monthly fees more than makes up for it.
